CHAIR Filed March l0, 1933 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 -Zv @Enfer @vengan Patented Sept. 11, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE l Claim.
My invention relates more particularly to chairs of the type involving backs adjustable to adapt the chairs to be properly conditioned for use by different persons.
One of my objects is to provide novel and simple means for adjusting the chair back.
Another object is to provide adjustable means for the chair back adapting the latter to be adjusted generally in a horizontal direction and preferably in a substantially vertical direction.
Another object is to provide a chair back and adjusting means which shall present great rigidity; and other objects as will be manifest from the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of a chair embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan sectional view taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 and Viewed in the direction of the arrow.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken at the line 3 on Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken at the line 4 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the particular construction -of chair illustrated in the drawings, the same comprises a suitable base represented at 5 and upon which a chair seat represented generally at 6 is swivelly mounted.
The chair seat shown is formed of a body portion comprising a suitable plate portion 7 shown as provided with the upholstery 8 in accordance with common practice. Extending across the underside of the plate 7 is a spider frame 9 shown as secured in place by bolts 10 passing through the plate 7, the ends of the arms of the spider 9 and angle irons 11 underlying the ends of the spider.
The back of the chair comprises upwardly extending arms 12 shown as of tubular form connected at their lower ends with a tubular cross member 13 journalled on the chair seat 6 as hereinafter described, the upper ends of the arms 12 being connected by a back rest 14 such as is commonly provided in chair constructions of this type and provided at its opposite ends with rearwardly extending lugs 15 at which the back rest is connected With the arms 12 preferably by swivel adjustable connections to permit the back rest `14 to be adjusted into different angular positions relative to the arms 12.
The connections shown between the arms 12 and the cross member 13 which latter is shown as in the form of a tube, comprise screw studs 16 adapted to extend through any one of a series of openings 17 in each of the arms 12, and screw into nuts, one only of which is shown at 1311., located in the ends of the cross member 13 and secured thereto as for example by Welding them in place, the ends of the cross member 13 being shown as provided With saddles 18 against which the arms 12 are clamped upon tightening the studs 16.
In the construction shown the cross member 13 is journalled adjacent its opposite ends in bearings 19 on the seat portion of the chair provided in the form of eyes formed from rearward extensions of the horizontal anges of the angle bars 11.
The construction shown also comprises means for holding the chair back in any desired position of angular adjustment about the axis of the cross member 13, the means shown comprising an arm 20 rigid with the cross member 13 and containing an opening to receive a clamp screw 21, and a link 22 pivoted at its upper end, as represented at 23, to the vertical flange of the adjacent one of the angle bars 11, the free end of the link containing a series of openings 24 extending therealong and preferably arranged in staggered relation as shown to selectively receive the clamp screw 21, which latter is bodily removable to permit the chair back to be adjusted as desired and is adapted to be re-assembled with the arm 20 and link 22 to rigidly hold the chair back in the position to which it was adjusted.
As will be understood from the foregoing, pro- Vision is made not only for upiand down adjustment of the arms 12 and back rest 14, but also for adjustment of the chair back angularly about the axis of the cross member 13; the provision of the chair back as above described insures great rigidity thereof and the provision of the chair-back-holding means comprising the arm 20 and the link 22 insures the rigid holding of the chair back in adjusted position.
While I have illustrated and described a particular construction embodying my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto, as the same may be variously modified and altered without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A chair having a seat portion, a back portion on said seat portion, said back portion comprising spaced apart upwardly extending members and a cross member connecting said members together and at which said back portion is journaled for adjustment about a substantially horizontal axis, said cross member being provided at its ends with saddles presenting concaved seating surfaces against which said members bear, and means for holding said back portion in adjusted position.
EVAN C. HARTER.
