Description

Sept. 1 1, 1934. c SMALLY HEADLIGHT ATTACHMENT Filed Jan. 26. 1952 Patented Sept. 11, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HEADLIGHT ATTACHMENT Emanuel C. Smally, Canton, Ohio Application January 26, 1932, Serial No. 588,944
' 2 Claims/ (Cl. 24048.4)
This invention pertains to attachments for headlights that are easily and readily applied and removed therefrom.
The prime object of the invention is to provide simple, economical and efiicient detachable flexible hooded means secured over the front of the headlight lens to which means is fixedly secured a vertically disposed colored transparent medium partly cut away so as to simultaneously produce a combined white light and a colored beam from the headlight.
The above, together with other objects which will be apparent from the drawing and following description, or which will be later pointed out, may be attained by constructing the device as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a headlight showing the improved attachment mounted over 20 the lens thereof;
Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view through a headlight having the attachment thereon;
Fig. 3, a detail sectional view of a portion of the headlight showing a modified form of the attachment;
Fig. 4, a view similar to Fig. 3, showing still another modified form of the invention;
Fig. 5, a view similar to Figs. 2 and 3 showing another modification of the attachment; and
Fig. 6, a fragmentary detail elevation showing the form of attachment illustrated in Fig. 5.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawing.
An automobile headlight of any conventional form is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the outer housing or casing thereof being indicated at 10, the reflector being shown at 11, the bright light bulb at 12, the parking light bulb at 13, the lens 14 being secured upon the headlight in customary manner as by the usual ring 15 and the headlight being mounted upon a bracket of usual and ordinary construction, as indicated at 16.
The attachment to which the invention pertains includes a colored transparent medium 17 in the form of a disk of suitable size to substantially cover the lens 14. This disk may be formed of cellophane in which case two sheets are preferably placed together as best shown in been found that a sheet of cellophane when exposed to moisture upon both sides will rapidly deteriorate but the moistening of only one surface of the cellophane sheet does not produce this effect. Thus by placing two sheets of the Fig. 2. This is done for the reason that it has cellophane together, each sheet protects one surface of the other sheet and prevents it from disintegrating when exposed to the fog.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, for the purpose of securing the transparent colored medium in place over the lens of the headlight, a band or strip 18 of fabric may be stitched or otherwise attached to the peripheral portion of the cellophane disk as indicated at 19, this band being of suflicient width to extend over the ring 15 of the headlight and having at its free edge a casing 20 within which may be located an elastic band or drawstring as indicated at 21,
which may be drawn down tightly around the outer housing or casing 10 of the headlight behind the ring 15 so as to hold the cellophane disk in position in front of the lens, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
If desired, other flexible means may be provided for assisting in holding the attachment in place, such as the straps 22 shown in Fig. 1 and adapted to be connected at opposite ends to the edge portions of the fabric band 18 and to extend around the housing or casing 10 of the headlight, or if desired, a cord 23 may be connected to the edge portion of the fabric band 18 and tied around the bracket 16.
As shown in Fig. 3, a flexible rubber band 24 may be substituted for the fabric band 18, and stretched over the ring 15 so as to hold the colored transparent medium in position upon the headlight.
A slightly different form of the invention is illustrated in this figure in which the transparent colored medium 17a may be cellophane or the like or, if desired, may be a sheet of glass having its peripheral portion enclosed between the two rings 25 and 26 which may be formed of hard rubber or the like if desired.
The ring 25 is of angular cross sectional shape while the ring 26 may be of channel cross sectional shape and preferably provided with the annular groove or recess 2'7 which may receive cement for holding the transparent disk assembled in the frame.
As shown in Fig. 4, the colored transparent medium which may be either cellophane or glass or other suitable material, as indicated at 17b, is adapted to be attached to the front surface of the headlight lens 14 as by a grooved or channel frame 28'which may extend upward to a point substantially halfway to the top of the headlight so that the transparent colored medium maybe slid downward therein in front of the lens, which will permit of the device being quickly and easily attached to or detached from the headlight.
If desired, one or more soft rubber vacuum cups 35 may be provided upon the inner side of the transparent colored medium 17b for connection to the front of the lens 14 so as to assist in holding the attachment in place.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5.and 6, the transparent colored disk 1'70, 0! cellophane or the like, may have its peripheral portion turned inward as at 29, a ring of cork or the like as indicated at 30 being connected to the inner side thereof for contact with the ring 15 of the headlight and a split sheet metal ring 31 being connected to the outer side thereof, both as by rivets 32.
A clamping device 33 of any usual and well known construction is provided in the sheet metal ring 31 so that the attachment may he slipped over the ring 15 of the headlight and tightly clamped thereon.
The transparent colored medium may cover the entire surface of the lens or if it is desirable or necessary, because of laws or ordinances in certain localities, to have a clear light showing from the headlight. a portion of the transparent colored medium may be cut out as indicated at 36 in Fig. 1 so that a beam of clear light from the headlight may be directed through this cutout.
I claim:
1. An attachment for a headlight comprising a flexible annular hooded member adapted to be fixedly fitted over the outer end of the headlight, said member'having an annular flexible outer band portion, and two sheets of colored cellophane placed together and fixedly secured to the inner side of the band, a portion of said sheets being cut away so that a combined beam of clear light and colored light are produced by the headlight.
2. An attachment for a headlight, comprising a' flexible annular member adapted to be secured over the outer end of the headlight, a flat transparent colored sheet secured to a portion of said member and adapted to be positioned on the outer side of the headlight lens, the free edge of the sheet terminating at a point within the annular band whereby a combined beam of clear and colored light is produced by said headlight.
