Sept. 4, 1934. J. B. ZIMMERS MOLDING STRIP Filed Sept. 12, 1931 ,5. Z zimmcra. @Jfi oRNEYs.
m T N E V m J'oseyir Patented Sept. 4,1934 I I 1,972,283 MOLDING STRIP Joseph B. Zimmers, Chicago, Ill., assignor of thirty per cent to Wilma M. Zimmers, twenty per cent to Ollie L. Herron, and thirty per cent to Anna L. Herron, all of Chicago, Ill.
Application September 12, 1931, Serial No. 562,483
8 Claims. (Cl. 280-163) My invention relates to molding strips and particularly to finish strips which may be em-- ployed for ornamental and protective purposes,
and which are provided with clips for effecting 6 a finish at the ends of the strips and for retaining the elements thereof in fixed position.
In practicing my invention, I utilize a metal receiving portion of a molding strip for retaining the member in predetermined position on a surface to be protected and ornamented and attach a finished strip of rubber, or other suitable material, to the metal retaining strip. The metal retaining strip is provided with inwardly presenting tenons which receive the arcuate sides of the 16 finish strip for retaining the strip in firm fixed relation to the retaining strip. The engagement is such that the finish strip is not easily removable from the retaining strip except by prying the end of the strip away from the tenons and applying a continuous upward pull on the end, to progressively withdraw the arcuate sides of the molding strip from engagement with the tenons and, therefore, the molding strip from the retaining strip. I have provided clips for encompassing the ends of the molding and retaining strips to render the ends nonaccessible, to thereby prevent the accidental removal of the molding strip and for adding an artistic appearance to the strip,
The main objects of my invention are: to provide a two-piece finish strip for protecting and ornamenting surfaces of a vehicle or other object, which is readily attached thereto and per-:
manently retained against removal; to provide a metal retaining strip of channel section having the sides thereof bent reversely to form inwardly presenting tenons which are utilized as holding elements; to provide a finish strip of rubber, metal or other suitable material having a height greater than the depth of the channel and provided with 4.0 arcuate sides which are engageable by said tenons; to provide clips for encompassing the ends of the finish and retainingstrips for providing a finish thereto; and to provide anchoring means for said clips over which the clips are slidably positioned and drawn into firm clamping relation with thetop of the molding and retaining strips when the anchoring means is securely tightened to the member having the surface to be protected and ornamented.
Other objects and features of novelty of my invention will be either specifically pointed out or will become apparent when referring, for a better understanding of my invention, to the following description in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a broken perspective View of an automotive vehicle body provided with molding strips embodying features of my invention,
Figure 2 is a perspective end view of a section of the strip illustrated in Fig. 1,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of an end clip employed with a molding strip illustrated in Fig. 2, and
Figure 4 is a sectional view through the molding strips and clips illustrating the clamped relation thereof.
In Fig. 1, I have illustrated an automotive vehicle body 7 upon which a finish molding strip 8 is attached for the purpose of providing a finished appearance to the top surface of the running board and at the same time to provide a protection to the running board material. The strips are also shown as being provided on the fender and rear panel of the vehicle to illustrate the various surfaces of the vehicle on which my strips may be advantageously employed to add to the appearance of the vehicle and to protect the surfaces against marring and damage. I V In Fig. 2, I have illustrated the molding strip as comprising a metal retaining strip 10 which has a bottom web portion 11 containing apertures 9 through which nails, screws or other fastening elements may be inserted for securing and retaining strip on a member. The web portion 11 is provided with upwardly extending sides 12 which are arcuately bent to form tenons 13 which project downwardly toward the web 11 in spaced relation to the sides 12.
The finish strip 15 is herein illustrated as being made of rubber, although it is to be understood that metal or other suitable materials may be employed in its stead. The finish strip 15 is shaped to have a height greater than thedepth of the sides 12 and to be provided with arcuate shaped edges 16 providing outwardly projecting extensions 17 at the base of the strip. The tenons 13 are engaged by the arcuate edges in such manner as to have the extensions 1'7 project under the edges of the tenons. A groove of V- shape extends throughout the length of the strip, in the bottom portion thereof, for a purpose which will now be explained.
After the retaining strip 10 has been secured in predetermined position, the molding strip 15 is arcuately bent laterally of its width at one end, which bending is facilitated because of the presence of the groove in the strip. The end of the finish strip is placed between the tenons 12, which it engages by its arcuate edges 16, when pressed downwardly against the web 11 into a flattened a; position. strip is" further 'arcuately bent-"longitudinally-of itslength and.
pressed against the-web 11 ina progressive manner until the entire length is contiguously positioned relative to the retaining strip 10, with "the extensions 17 projecting under the edges of the tenons, where itis retained by the bias of the material from which the strip is constructed.
' As pointed out hereinabove, the removal of the molding strip can be effected by prying an end thereof out of-engagement with the retaining strip and by progressively disengaging it from the retaining strip by pulling onthe disengaged endofthefinishstrip.
For covering the ends of the strip. eifect a finish thereto and for preventing the removal of the finish strip from the retaining strip, I have are spaced apart to form a slot 24. The laterally extending and ofthe top webiis flanged downward1yat 28 to strengthen the web and to form a tenon for engaging the top surface of the strip15.* g .Acarriagebolt' 2': extends throiigh an aperture spaced .a predetermined distance from the end and centrally of the molding, as illustrated in Fig. 4.. The head 28 of the bolt projects over the sides.23 of the clip 19 as .itis slidover the bolt through the medium of a slot 24;: {In this positionv the lateral flange-26 extends over the finishing strip 15 with the sides 22 projecting downwardly s; over' the sides 12 of the retaining strip. A nut 29, on the end of the bolt 27, is tightened to draw the clip against the supporting member v and It a to be understood that into firm fixed relation with the end of the molding strip. The engagement of the top web 21 with the sides 1201' the retaining strip and the flange 28 with the finish strip 15,1as illustrated in Fig. 4, firmly retains the end'of the strip on the member 30 and prevents either strip from becoming loosened relative to each other or the member. I i
the retaining and finishing strips as well as the clip 19 may vary in shape and construction from that herein shown, the precise shapes herein employed being utilized primarily for the purpose of illustration.
- While I have described and illustrated but a single embodiment of my invention, it will be ap-- parent to those skilled in theart that various changes, omissions, additions and substitutions may be made therein without departing'from the spirit and scope of my invention, as set forth in the accomp nyin claims.
