(Cl. 194-63) This invention relates to a combined vending and change making machine of the coin controlled type, and is designed primarily for the vending of newspapers, but it is to be understood that a machine, in accordance with this invention, may be used for the vending of books, periodicals, pamphlets, cards, sheets, pictures or any other article for which it may be found applicable, and theinvention has for its object to provide, in a "I0 manneras hereinafter set forth, a machine of the class referred to for expeditiously discharging therefrom a newspaper or other object after the insertion into the machine of a coin or coins ofa value corresponding to the price of a news paper or object and further to provide for the expeditious discharging therefrom of a newspaper or other object and the correct change required after the insertion into the machine of a coin of a greater value than the price of the newspaper or 20, other object.
The machine is of the normally latched type and requires for the insertion thereintc of a coin or coins of a value corresponding to or greater than the price of the newspaper to release it before the vending operation may be'carried out. By way of example it will be assumed that the price of the newspaper is two cents. When two cents are inserted into the machine they coact with and shift the element of the machine to provide for the release of the latter so its vending function may be carried out, i. e., the discharge of a newspaper therefrom, but during the vending operation, the cents are shifted from their coacting position with the latching element whereby at the end of the vending operation the latching element will be restored to its initial position and the machine again latched. By way of example, the machine is illustrated to be released from normally latched position by the insertion of two cents, a nickel, a dime and a quarter. The machine is provided with a tube containing cents and a pair of tubes containing nickels. .The operation of the machine with respect to the insertion thereinto of two cents has been set forth. The latching element referred to with which the two inserted cents coact is also common to an inserted nickel, dime or quarter. The machine also includes a set of threecoin deliverers and a set of three levers, each associated 5 with a deliverer for shifting the latter to delivery position, each deliverer being associated-with a coin storage tube. One deliverer is associated with the tube containing the cents for simultaneously delivering ,therefrom three cents. Another of the deliverers is associated with one of the nickel tubes for simultaneously delivering therefrom four nickels and the other deliverer being associated with the other nickel tube for delivering one nickel therefrom. One of thelevem is operated on the insertion of a nickel and which 00 f is associated with the deliverer for the tube containing the cents. Another of the levers is operated on the insertion of a dime and which is 1 associated with the deliverer for one of the tubes containing nickels, and the other of the, levers is operated on the insertion of a quarter and assoelated with that deliverer for the other tube containing nickels. The lever which is operated by an inserted nickel is alsoselectively operated from and with either one of the other of the levers. Now it will be assumed that a nickel has been inserted into the machine, the nickel will provide for the shifting of the latching element to released position and permit ofthe vending operation being carried out, but at the same time (5 the nickel will shift the lever associated with the coin deliverer for the cents tube to position such deliverer, when operated, for the delivery of three cents, the correct change from the machine, and in the meanwhile the newspaper or other article ad will be delivered. Now it will be assumed that a dime is inserted in the machine. The operation will be the same as referred to with respect to the insertion of a nickel with this exception, that the coin deliverer for a single nickel will be as shifted to delivery position by its lever, and the latter will also operate the lever to shift the coin deliverer for three cents to delivery position, whereby when the pair of deliverers are operated the correct change amounting to eight cents will be discharged from the machine and in the meanwhile the newspaper or other article will also be delivered. Now it 'will be assumed that a quarter is inserted into the machine. The operation will be the same as referred to with rea; spect to the insertion of a nickel, with this exception, the coin deliverer for four nickels will be shifted'by its lever to delivery position and such lever will also operate the lever for the coin deliverer for three cents, whereby when said pair of deliverers are operated, the correct change amounting to twenty-three cents will be discharged from the machine and in the meanwhile the newspaper or other article will also be discharged. I
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a combined vending and change making machine for the purpose referred to which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, 11.
durable, compact, conveniently operated, thoroughly efficient in its use, permitting of having ready access thereto when occasion requires, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
To the above ends essentially and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of such parts and such combination of parts which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

The machine includes a housing 1 including a top 2, a rear -wall 3, a bottom 4, a pair of side walls 5, 6 and a front wall formed of a hinged section 7 and a stationary section 8. The section '7 is in the form of a door, is hinged to the side wall 5, as at 9, provided with a transparent panel 10 and a locking means as indicated at 11.
Arranged within the housing 1 is a vertically disposed partition 12 which is anchored to the rear wall 3, top 2, bottom 4 and section 8. The partition 12 is provided with a cutout 12 to form a clearance for a purpose to be referred to. The partition 12 is disposed in parallel relation to the end wall 6 and positioned in close proximity thereto.
The bottom 4 at its front is provided with a lengthwise slot 13 for the discharge of the news paper, and is also provided rearwardly of said slot 13 with an opening 14 for the passage of the coins from the change delivery device or mechanism to be presently referred to.
Secured upon the bottom 4 rearwardly of slot 13 and forwardly of opening 14 is a set of spaced vertically disposed parallel stop members 15 having their upper edges 16' beveled downwardly from rear to front. The members 15 abut and are secured to the rear face of a brace bar 16 formed with oppositely extending end portions 1'7, 18, the former being secured to the inner face of wall 5 of housing 1 and the latter having its end edge secured to the inner face of section 8 of the front wall of housing 1. The intermediate portion of bar 16 is arranged above, rearwardly of and in proximity to slot 13. Fixedly secured with the housing 1 between the partition 12 and wall 5 is an angle-shaped casting 19 formed of an upper part 20 and a forward part 21. The part 20 inclines downwardly from the rear wall 3 and constitutes an inclined support for the newspapers 22. The part 21 depends from the forward end of part 20, has its upper portion perpendlcular'and its lower portion inclining forwardly with respect to its upper portion. The lower end of part 21 is arranged at the wall of slot 13. The inclined lower portion of part 21 is designated 23 Figure 6. The intermediate portion of bar 16 is positioned against the rear face of the lower portion 21 of casting 19 and has its top edge bearing against the lower face of part 20 of casting 19 in proximity to the bend 24 between the parts 20 and 21. The 'part 20 in close proximity to the intermediate portion of bar 16 is formed with a set of spaced endwise opposed slots 25 through which extend the stop members 15.
Secured to the upper portion of the inner face of wall 5 and to the upper portion of that face of partition 12 which opposes the inner face of wall 5 are a pair of parallel spaced oppositely disposed track members 26 which incline downwardly from rear to front. Slidably mounted in the member 26 are trolleys 2'7 having depending therefrom a gravity movable feed plate 28 functioning to feed the newspapers 22 from off the part 20 of casting 19. The plate 28 abuts the rear newspaper of the supply of newspapers and normally tends to maintain the forward newspaper of the supply against the upper portions of the members 15 and also against a set of depending curved retaining springs or holders 29 anchored at their upper ends to the inner face of the top 2 of the housing. The members 15 and springs 29 coact to normally retain the newspapers-in the position shown in Figure 4. The springs 29 depend at a forward inclination from their upper to their lower ends and are curved in a manner to allow the top of the outer newspaper of the supply to clear them when said outer newspaper is to be delivered from the machine.
The stop members 15 also provide guides for a set of channel-shaped vertically disposed article deliverers 30 functioning to act upon the bottom edge of the forward newspaper for lifting thelatter clear of the stop members 15 whereby it will be in a position to drop down through the passage 31 and extend through the slot 13. The deliverers 30 straddle and are of less height than the stop members 15. The deliverers 30 are shifted vertically by a means to be referred to and pass upwardly through the slots 25 to abut the bottom edge of the forward newspaper for the purpose referred to. The passage 31 is provided by the section 7 of the front wall of the housing and the part 21 of'casting 19. Secured to the lower portion of the rear face of each deliverer 30 is an upstanding rearwardly curved arm 32 formed at its upper end with a rearwardly opening downwardly inclined yoke 33.
The inner face of wall 5 has secured thereto a tubular bearing element 34. The outer face of wall 6 has secured thereto a tubular bearing element 35 which aligns with element 34. Secured to bottom 7 is an upstanding support 36 having an opening aligning with the elements 34, 35. Extending through the wall .6, the opening in support 36 and journaled in the elements 34, 35 is the operating shaft 37 of the machine. Fixed to the shaft 37 in close proximity to the inner face of wall 6 is a disc 38, Figure 10 formed with a rectangular notch 39 in the edge'thereof. Fixed to and extending from the edge of disc 38 adjacent the notch 39 is a cam 40 which is disposed at right angles to shaft 37. The cam 40 has an outer portion 41 of uniform height, an intermediate portion 42 of gradually increasing height and an inner portion 43 of uniform height but of greater height than portion 41. The upper edge of cam 40 is formed with a low outer part 44, a curved intermediate part 45 extending upwardly from the part 44 and a high part 46 into which the upper end of part 44 merges. The purpose of cam 40 will be hereinafter referred to.

The lever 50 normally inclines downwardly from its front end and the hook 51 -normally engages in notch 39. The lever 50 has its front end formed with a depending lug 52 for limiting the upward movement of the rear end of the lever.
Anchored to the inner face of wall 6 between disc 38 and section 8 of the front wall oi the housing is a coin receiver 53, Figure 9 consisting of ablock 54 from which extends the support 48'. The inner side face of block 54 is formed with a pair of apertured lugs 55 in which is Journaled a shaft 56. The block 54 has its top edge formed with a groove 57 which extends from the front to the rear face thereof. The block 54 is also provided with a set of spaced vertically disposed grooves four in number, and indicated at 58, 59, 60 and 61 which progressively decrease in depth from groove 58. The grooves of the set open at the top of block 54 are intersected by.
and disposed at right angles to the groove 57.
The latter is disposed to one side of the top of block 54. The grooves of the set extend from the outer to the inner side face of the block and are of a depth materially less than the height of the latter. The depth of groove 57 is greater than that of either of the grooves of the said set. The cam 40 normally seats upon the bottom of groove 57, and intersects the grooves of the said set. The member 50 normally extends lengthwise of the upper portion of groove 57.
The wall 6 is iormed with coin entrance slots 62, 63, 64 and which register respectively with the grooves 58, 59, 60 and 61. The slot 62 is for the entrance of cents or pennies. The slot 63 is for quarters, the slot 64 for nickels and the slot 65 for dimes. The normal position of the cam 40 is when seated upon the bottom of groove 57 and extended transversely with respect to .the grooves of said set. When in normal position, the top edge of the part 44 of the cam aligns with the bottom of groove 58, the curved intermediate part 45 of the top edge of the cam at spaced points registers with the bottoms of grooves 59, 60 and the top edge 46 of the high part oi the cam aligns with the bottom of groove 61. The depth of groove 58 is greater than that of groove59, the depth of the latter is greater than that of groove 60 and the depth of the latter is slightly greater than thatof groove 61. The length of groove 60 is greater than that of grooves 58 and 61 and the length'of grooves 58 and 61 are substantially the same. The block 54 is rabbeted on its outer side face, as at 66 Figure 8. The stop 52 is adapted to abut block 54 for limiting the upward movement of the inner end of member 50 Figure 3.
The machine includes a storage for coins and from which the required amount" of change is delivered." The said storage consists of three vertically disposed tubes disposed in parallel pennies and the tube 69 for nickels. The .tube 68 is arranged between the tubes. 67, 69. The several tubes are open at both ends. The upper ends of the tubes are anchored in the support 20 and their lower ends anchored in openings 70 formed in a horizontally disposed plate 71 mounted on and secured to the rear portions of the tops of a pair of vertically spaced supports 72 anchored upon the bottom 4 of housing 1. The plate 71 is formed with a pair of end parts 73, 74 and an intermediate part 75. The bottom of part 75 extends downwardly beyond the bottom. of part 73. The part 74 extends downwardly beyond the bottom of part 75.
Associated with the coin storage is a change delivery device or mechanism including three spring controlled slidable horizontally shiftable change delivery elements 76, 77 and 78. each being in the form of a flat bar having an opening 79, a hook-shaped notch 80 intermediate its ends'and a transversely extending edge portion 81 also intermediate its ends. The edge por tion 81 provides a stop. The outer end portion of the bar is reduced in width, as at 82. One lengthwise edge of the bar has a straight outer part 83 and an inclined rear part 84. The other lengthwise edge of the bar has a straight rear part 85, an inclined intermediate part 86 and a straight outer part 87. The opening 79 is interposed between the notch 80 and rearend of the bar. The
element 76 is of greater thickness than any of the other delivery elements and is arranged below and is associated with the tube 67. The opening 79 in element 76 is adapted to receivefour nickels from the tube 67 and deliver the same into a conducting chute 88. The element 77 is of greater thickness than element 78 and is arranged below and is associated with tube 68. The opening 79 in element 77 is adapted to receive three cents or pennies from tube 68 and deliver the same into the chute 88. The element 78 is arranged below and is associated with tube 69. The opening 79 in element 78 is adapted to receive one nickel from tube 69 and deliver the same into the chute 88.
The controlling springs for the elements 76, 77 and 78 are indicated at 89. Each spring is anchored at its rear end as at 90 to plate 71 and at its forward end to the forward end of a change delivery element as at 91. The elements 76, 77 and 78 have depending from said forward ends lugs 92, 93 and 94 respectively. Pivotally connected to the lugs 92, 93 and 94 are pull bars or links 95, 96 and 97 respectively. The pull bars are disposed at an angle with respect to the change delivery elements and extend towards the coin receiver 53. The lug 92 is of greater height than lug 93, and the latter is of greater height than lug 94. The pull bar 95 has an oilset portion 98 to provide a clearance for bar 96 and the latter has an offset portion 99 to provide a clearance for bar 97.
Pivotally mounted in spaced relation upon shaft 56 is a set of three operating levers for the pull bars. The levers are indicated at 100, 101 and 102 and have pivotally attached'to the lower ends thereof by the headed coupling'pins 103 theouter ends of the pull bars. The outer ends of the pull bars 95, 96 and 97 are pivotally connected virith the lower ends "of the levers 100, 101 and 102 respectively. Each operating lever is mounted on shaft 56 between the transverse median thereof and its upper end. The upper ends of'the levers 100, 101 and 102 normally extend into the upper portion of the inner ends of the grooves 59, 60 and 61 respectively. The levers 100, 101 and 102 are iii for horizontally shifting thelements 76', 77 and '18 respettively through the medium of the pull bars 95, 96 and 97 respectively. The upper portions of the operating levers are of greater width than the lower portions thereof. 1 One lengthwise edge of each lever is inclined and the other straight. Each operating lever gradually increases in width from its upper to its lower end. The inclined lengthwise side edge of each operating lever opposes the inner side of the coin receiver 53.
The lever 101 may be operated independently of the levers 100 and 102, or it'may be operated in conjunction with lever 100, or in conjunction with lever 102. For this purpose, levers 100 and 102 are provided with clips 103, 104 respectively, the former being arranged above the other. The clips 103, 104 are extended to oppose transversely the straight lengthwise edge of lever 101. When the levers are operated, the lower portions thereof swing towards the coin receiver 53. Now it will be assumed that lever 100 has been operated from the normal position shown in Figures 5 and 8, as the lower portion of such lever swings toward the coin receiver 53 the clip 103 will engage lever 101' and operate it in conjunction with lever .100
whereby the delivery elements 76 and 77 will be shifted to a position to be operated by a 'means to be referred to whereby they will deliver one nickel and three pennies. If lever 102 is operated, clip 104 will engage lever 101 and operate it in conjunction with lever 102 whereby the delivery elements 77 and 78 will be shifted to a position to be operated by a means to be hereinafterreferred to whereby they will deliver three pennies and one nickel. If lever 101 be operated, it will provide for the shifting of delivery element 77 to a position whereby it will be operated by a means to be hereinafter referred to to deliver three cents or pen-.
started it will carry cam 40 therewith, which in turn will elevate the quarter causing the latter to shift the upper portion of lever 100 out of groove 59 and also to move the hook 51 of member 50 clear of the'notch 39 thereby releasing the machine for delivery of the newspaper and the change required. On the shifting of the upper end of lever 100 away from the coin receiver 53, lever 101 will be carried with lever 100 and the movement of said levers will provide for the shifting of delivery elements 76 and 77 for the purpose of discharging twenty-three cents change. If a' dime is inserted in groove 61 the foregoing operation will be had with respect to levers 102, 101
and delivery elements 77 and 78 for the purpose of discharging eight cents change. If a nickel is inserted in groove 60 the foregoing operation will be had with respect to lever 101 and delivery eleangle-shaped casting 105, the supports. 72 and a depending hollow closed lower end open top downwardly extending inclined casing 106 which gradually decreases in width from its upper to its lower end. The casing 106 also provides a change holder and a stop and deflector for the lower end of a vended newspaper. The casing 106 has a portion of its front open, as at 107 and which is normally closed by a downwardly inclined hinged door 108. The casing 106 is secured at its upper end to the bottom of the housing 1 and surrounds the opening 14. The hinged door 108 isarranged below and in spaced relation to the slot 13 whereby when the newspaper passes through slot 13 it will be arrested by and deflected outwardly by door 108. The casting 105 is arranged between and is of less height than that of supports 72; The casting'105 is formed of a flat upper part 109 arranged in spaced relation to and below plate 71. The elements 76, 77 and 78 slide upon part 1.09 of casting 105, and the latter includes a forward part 110 which depends from and inclines forwardly from part 109. The part 110 constitutes acoin deflector. The lower end of part llo-aligns'with the rear wall of opening 14 and the rear of casing 105. The parts 109, are provided with upstanding spaced webs 111' for dividing the chute 88 and providing abutments for' the change delivery elements. The webs 111 1 coast with the supports 72 for the purpose just 105 a lock 114. When shaft 37 is rotated in one di- 115 rection to provide for the vending operation and then released by the operator, the spring 47 causes the rotation of the shaft in the opposite direction to cause the cam 40 to assume the position shown in Figure 4. As cam 40 movestc such position the outer end thereof will engage the lug 52, the latter being in the dotted line position shown in Figure 3 and move the latching member 50- from the dotted line position to its normal position as shown in full lines Figure 3.
The shaft 37 is provided with a set of spaced inclined arms 115 which engage in the yokes 33 of arms 32, whereby when shaft 37 is rotated in a direction from normal, the deliverers 30 will be elevated on the stop members 15 and pass up through the slots 25 to engage the bottom edge of the forward newspaper and elevate the latter to clear the top edges 16 of the stop members 15, whereby the newspaper will fall by gravity through passage 31 to abut door 108. When the shaft 37 is returned to its normal position by spring 47, the deliverers 30 will be shifted to the lowered position thereof shown in Figure .4.
Coacting with the elements '76, '77 and 78 re spectively are the operating members 116. 117 and 118 therefor. These members also act as stops or looks to arrest the delivery action of elements '76, 77 and 78 unless coins have been inserted in the machine. The operating members coact with the notches 80 for the purpose of slidably moving the elements 76, 77 and 78 outwardly to deliver the change. The normal position of members 116, 117 and 118 is in opposed relation to the edge portlons 81 to be abutted thereby to arrest outward shift of the elements 76, 77 and 78 when coins are v 1,971,298 not deposited in grooves 59, 60 and 61. The operating members 116, 117 and 118 are fixed to and bodily move with shaft 3'7, are arranged in parallel spaced relation, extend rearwardly atan inclination with respect to shaft 37 and are disposed in an opposite direction with respect to arms 115. The lower ends of the members 116, 117 and 118 extend through and normally arranged at the rear portions of the notches 80. The reduced forward or outer end 82 of each of the elements 76, 77 and 78 provide a clearance for a holder member when that delivery element with which the holder member is associated is not horizontally shifted. 'When a delivery element is horizontally shifted notch and move the delivery element outwardly to provide for the delivery of change. The outward sliding movement of a delivery element is bad against the action of its controlling spring,
- and the latter functions to return the delivery element to which it is attached to normal position when shaft 37 is returned to its normal position.
The arms 115 and members'lle, 117 and 118 move simultaneously whereby the vending and change making operations are had at the same time. a
When two pennies or cents are inserted in groove 58, they will provide for the releasing of the machine for vending purposes only. The pennies will be carried upwardly by cam 40 causing the release of latching member and permitting of the shaft 3'7 being operated to cause the operation of certain parts of the machine to deliver a newspaper therefrom. 116, 117 and 118 are carried with shaft 37 but they clear the elements l6, l7 and 78 due to the fact that not one of these elements has been horiarticles therein and for discharging them therefrom, a coin controlled change delivering means, a normally latched spring controlled operating shaft common to said vending and delivering means, oppositely disposed means bodily carried by and moving with the shaft for respectively positioning an article for discharge from the vending structure and for operating the change delivering means simultaneously with the positioning of the article to be discharged when the shaft is unlatched, and a coin releasable latching mea -s for the shaft, the said change delivering means being extended into the path of the coin releasing the latching means and controlled by such coin.

A combined vending and change making machine comprising an article storage and vending structure including means for retaining the articles therein and for discharging them therefrom, a coin controlled change delivering means, a normally latched spring controlled operating shaft common to said bending and delivering means, oppositely disposed means bodily carried by and moving with the shaft for respectively positioning an article for discharge from the vending structure and for operating the change delivering means simultaneously with the positioning of the article to be discharged when the shaft is un- The operating members I latched, a coin releasable latching means for the shaft, the said change delivering means being extended into the path of the coin releasing the latching means and controlled by such coin, a housing enclosing said structure, means and shaft,
said housing having its bottom formed with a slot for the discharge of the said positioned article and an opening rearwardly of the slot for the discharge of the change, and a conducting means for the change connected to said bottom.
3. A combined vending and change making machine comprising an article storage and vending structure including means for retaining the articles therein and for discharging them therefrom, a coin controlled change delivering means, a normally latched spring controlled operating shaft common to said vending and delivering means, oppositely disposed means bodilycarried by and moving with the shaft for respectively positioning an article for discharge from the-vending structure and for operating the change delivering means-simultaneously with the positioning of the article to be discharged when the'shaft and an opening rearwardly of the slot for the dis- 7 charge of the change, and a depending and outwardly directed element attached to said bottom, registering with said opening, extending under in spaced relation with respect to the slot and providing a combined change conducting and discharged article supporting means.
4. In a combined vending and change making machine, a change delivery mechanism provided with means having provisions actuatable and controlled by coins of different values inserted in the machine for controlling delivery of change from saidmechanism, a normally latched rotatable operating shaft, a coin releasable latching means for said shaft, and a combined look-- ing and operating means carried by said shaft for said mechanism and providing for locking said mechanism when the shaft is latched and for operating said mechanism for delivery of change therefrom when the shaft is unlatched subsequent to the actuation of the said coin actuatable means of'said mechanism.
5. A combined vending and change making machine comprising a coin actuated change dee livery mechanism including selectively operable change deliverers and having the amount of the change delivered therefrom controlled by coins of different values inserted in the machine, a normally latched rotatable operating shaft, a coin releasable latching means for said shaft including a part carried with the latter and a shiftable pivoted part slidably engaging in the said other part, means carried by the said other part for shifting an inmrted coin tomove the pivoted part to non-engaging position to release the shaft and to position a deliverer to be operated, and means carried by said shaft, bodily movable therewith and providing for normally locking said deliverers when the shaft is in latched position and for selectively operating said deliverers when the shaft is released.
6 A combined vending and change making machine comprising an actuatable change delivery mechanism having its actuation and delivery controlled by coins of different values inserted in the machine, a normally latched rotatable operating shaft, a. combined locking and operating means carried by the shaft for said mechanism, a coin releasable latching means for the shaft including a disc bodily moving with the latter and a shiftable latching member for latching engagement with the disc and shifted from engagement with the disc by an inserted coin, an elevating means for inserted coins bodily moving with the disc to provide for the inserted coins shifting the said member from latching position and control delivery from said mechanism on the movement of the shaft from normal position, a support for the shaft, and a controlling spring carried by the shaft having one end anchored to said support and its other end anchored to said disc.

In a combined vending and change making machine a change delivering mechanism including normally latched spring controlled releasable selectively operable change deliverers having the amount of change delivered thereby controlled by coins of diflerent values inserted in the machine, a normally latched spring controlled releasable rotatable operating shaft, means carried by and bodily moving with the shaft for normally locking the deliverers when the shaft is latched and for selectively operating said deliverers when the shaft is released, a coin releasable latching means for theshaft including a disc bodily, moving with the latter and a pivoted coin shifted latching member normally in latching engagement with the disc to prevent rotation of the shaft, an elevating means for and positioned in the path of the inserted coins, said coin elevating means bodily moving with the disc and providing for an inserted coin shifting the said member from latching engagement to release the shaft and for the selective positioning of the deliverers for actuation by said means on the shaft when the latter is moved from its normal position, supporting means for said shaft, and the controlling spring for said shaft having one end anchored to said supporting means and the other end'tosaid disc.
8. A combined vending and change making machine comprising a change delivery mechanism having its delivery controlled by the edges of coins inserted in the machine, a normally latched rotatable coin releasable operating shaft, a combined locking and operating means carried by the shaft for said mechanism, a latching means for the shaft including a disc bodily moving with the latter and a coin shifted latching member for engagement with the disc, an elevating means for inserted coins bodily movingwith the disc for shifting the said member from latching position on the movement of the Shaft from normal position, a support for the shaft, a controlling spring carried by the shaft having one and anchored to said support and its other end anchored to said disc, and a grooved receiver for inserted coins, said coin elevating means normally .ceiver to be acted upon by coins elevated by said said shaft, bodily movable therewith and providing for normally locking said deliverers when the shaft is in latched position and for selectively operating said deliverers when the shaft is released, a latching means for the shaft including a disc bodily moving with the latter and a coin shifted latching member for engagement with the disc, an elevating means for inserted coins bodily moving with the disc for shifting the said member from latching position on the movement of the shaft from normal position, a support for the shaft, a controlling spring carried by the shaft having one end anchored to said support and its other end anchored to said disc, and a grooved receiver for inserted coins, said coin elevating means normally positioned in said re-. ceiver, and said delivery mechanism having elements thereof extending in grooves of the relifting means to control the delivery of said mechanism.
10. In a combined vending and change making machine, a change delivering mechanism including selectively shiftable delivery means for controlling the delivery of change therefrom, a grooved receiver for inserted coins having said means extending into grooves thereof and with the shifting of said means controlled by the diameter of the inserted coins, means for elevating the inserted coins for shifting the delivering means to a position for operation, rotatable element carrying said lifting means and provided with means for operating said delivery means, and a latch for said rotatable element released by the inserted coins when they are elevated.
11. In a combined vending and change making machine, a shiftable merchandise deliverer, a shiftable coin controlled change deliverer, a structure provided with means to cause the merchandise deliverer to travel, when shifted, in a path at right angles to the path of travel of the change deliverer when the latter is shifted, a normally latched spring controlled operating shaft, a coin releasable latching means for said shaft, and oppositely inclined means bodily moving with said shaft when the latter is unlatched and engaging in said deliverers for simultaneously shifting them.
12. In a combined vending and change making machine, a normally latched spring controlled rotatable shaft having means for simultaneously operating article and coin controlled change delivering devices, a receiver adjacent said shaft for inserted coins of different values and for a coin controlled part of each of said devices, a disc fixed to and bodily moving with said shaft and having a notch in its edge, a coin shiftable latching member pivotally supported from and extending across said receiver and provided at one end with a hook normally extended into said notch for latching the disc and shaft, said hook being of materially less area than that of the notch, and an inserted coin elevating member extending into said receiver and upon which the inserted coin rests at a position below said parts and lever whereby on the elevating the coin said lever will be shifted to return position and one of said devices positioned for change delivery.

In a combined vending and change making machine, a normally latched rotatable shaft adapted to carry means for operating article deliverers and change deliverers, a disc bodily movi1.g with the shaft and having its edge notched and a latching member shiftable to unlatched position and provided at one end with a hook normally ex- 150 tended into said notch for latching said shaft, said hook being of materially less area than that of the notch, a coin receiver, said member having a portion thereof extended into the receiver, a cam carried by and bodily moving with said disc, said cam normally positioned in said receiver and providing for elevating the coins passed into the receiver to provide for the coins shifting said member to unlatched position, said member having means coacting with said receiver for limiting the movement of said member when the latter is shifted to nnlatched position, and said cam coacting with said means when moved to normal position to return saidlever to latching position.
14. In a combined vending and change making machine, upper and lower deliverers disposed at right angles to each other, a spring controlled rotatable shaft, operating elements disposed at opposite inclin'ations with respect to each other and engageable in said deliverers for simultaneously operating them, said elements being fixedly secured to and bodily moving with the shaft, a latching means for the shaft adapted to be actuated to unlatched position to release the shaft by a coin inserted in the machine, and means bodily moving with the shaft for elevating the coin to actuate the latching means successively to non-latching and latching position.
15. In a, combined vending and change making -machine, a spring controlled change deliverer having a hook-shaped notch and a stop, a spring controlled rotatable operating shaft, a coin controlled latching means for said shaft an operating element for said deliverer carried by the shaft and coasting with said stop when the shaft is latched to lock said deliverer and coacting with the notch when the shaft is unlatched to operate the deliverer, means for shifting a coin inserted in the machine to move said latching means from latching position with respect to the shaft to release the latter for operation against the action of its controlling springand for restoring said latching means to latching position after the operation of said shaft, and means connected to the deliverer and actuated by the coin when the latter is shifted to move the deliverer to position said notch in the path of said element.
16. In a combined vending and change making machine, a change delivery mechanism including a series of normally locked change deliverers,
means controlled by a coin inserted in the machine for moving said deliverers separately or in pairs to a position to be operated, a spring controlled rotatable shaft having elements extended therefrom for locking and selectively operating said deliverers, a latching means for the shaft, and means for shifting a coin inserted in the machine to provide for the coin actuating the means to position the deliverers for operation and for moving said latching means to non-latching position to release the shaft for operation.
