Description

Allg- 14, 1934. J. E. sALlNGER FOLDER OR INCLOSURE Filed March 4. 1952 Patented Aug. I4, 1934 FOLDER OR INCLOSURE Joseph E. Salinger, Akron, Ohio Application March 4, 1932, Serial No. 596,860
9 Claims.
My invention relates to a folder or inclosure for articles of merchandise when carried in the hand, displayed in a store, led away or otherwise, and is primarily adapted to be made of cardboard or heavy paper in combination with an integral or separate pocket.
It is especially aimed to provide such an article as can be manufactured expeditiously and at low cost from paper or the like and a single staple, the latter having a particular location and functioning to secure parts together and afford a flap of requisite tension to hold a cover in closed position.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of one form of folder, the closure leaf or wall being open;
Figure 2 is an enlarged central vertical section of said folder with the closure leaf or wall in closed position;
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the pocket or envelope of said form, the closure flap being open;
Figure 4 is a front elevation similar to Figure 1 but with the closure flap open;
Figure 5 is a detail section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a front elevation, with the closure leaf or wall raised, of a third form of the invention;
Figure 7 is a central vertical section through the form of Figure 6, the closure leaf or wall being raised, and
Figure 8 is a plan of the blank which produces the form of Figures 6 and '7.
Referring specifically to the drawing and first to the form of Figures l to 3, a pocket is provided by an envelope 10 which may be of any particular shape, size or material. It is preferably of light Weight paper and transparent or otherwise. The envelope may be formed by folding flaps 11 and 12 over a main Wall 13 and folding a bottom flap 14 over both of them. While the engaged portions of said flaps 11, 12 and 14 may be secured together by adhesive or otherwise, they are usually free thereof and secured together solely by a staple as later described. A usual closure iiap for an envelope is preferably provided as at 15.
A backing 16 is used which is initially a blank of rectangular form. It is preferably made of cardboard or heavy paper. One end portion or flap 17 thereof is folded over the envelope at the rear and extends from a front leaf 18 disposed over the front of the envelope. A closure leaf or wall 19 is connected to the wall or leaf 18 by a fullness portion 20, weakened or scored fold lines 21 preferably being formed at their junction.
A single metallic staple 22 is passed through the walls 1'7, 18 and flaps 11, 12 and 14 and it preferably constitutes the sole fastening means for all of these walls and flaps.
Particular attention is called to the fact that the envelope is held in such a position by the single staple that it cannot turn relatively to the backing. Also the staple is located below the upper edge ofv the flap 1'7 so that when the leaf or wall 19 is turned down, it may be inserted beneath the upper edge of said flap, as in Figure 2, and held closed as such edge is under requisite tension. 'Ihe portion 20 provides for expansion of the envelope in case of undue bulk.
The zone of contact and holding engagement of the leaf 16 and flap 17 is completely across the device.
A modified form is shown in Figure 4 and it differs from that of the preceding gures only with respect to the envelope which forms the pocket. 'This envelope, is of transparent or other paper, having a front Wall 20, overlapping side flaps 21 but devoid of a bottom flap like 14 in the preceding form. The backing is identical with that of the first form and the same reference characters have been applied. The metallic staple 22 is similarly positioned and constitutes the sole fastening means for the flaps 21 and backing. The bottom fold of the backing closes the lower edge of the envelope, as well shown in Figure 5.
A third form of the invention is illustrated in Figures 6 to 8 which is produced from a single blank or cardboard, heavy paper or the like according to Figure 8. `This device has a main wall 30, side flaps 3l adapted to beffolded over each other and a bottom flap 32 adapted to be folded over the side flaps and all secured together solely by a staple 33 similar to that at 22. A closure leaf, ap or Wall 34 functions like those at 16 in the preceding figures, its free end coacting with the upper free end of ilap 32 instead of flap 17. Closure leaf 34 is connected to the main wall 30 by a fullness or expansion piece 35 equivalent to that at 20 and preferably defined by weakened or scored lines 36. This form of the invention may be transparent if desired.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the class described having a main wall, an end portion returned over said wall, means between said wall and end portion to form apocket, a fastening below the free edge oi' said portion passing through the latter and said pocket-forming means and attaching said pocket-forming means to said main wall, said pocket-forming means being of substantially the same length as the said main wall, and a closure member extending from the wall at the end opposite to said portion and at its free portion being insertable between said end portion and said means.
2. A device according to claim 1 in which the zone of engagement of said end portion and closure member is substantially entirely across the device.
3. A device according to claim 1 wherein said pocket-forming means is an envelope.
4. A device according to claim i wherein said pocket-forming means consists o! a main wall,
side walls in overlapped relation and extending trom opposite ends thereof, the told at the junction of the end portion and main wall serving to close the bottom of said means.
5. A device according to claim 1 wherein the main wall, pocket-forming means and closure member' are in a single blank.
6. A device according to claim l wherein the main wall, pocket-forming means and closure are made in a single piece of paper material.
7. A device according to claim 1 wherein the pocket-forming means is initially separate from the main wall.
8. A device according to claim 1 wherein said pocket-forming means has an insert opening substantially at the junction of the main wall and closure member.
9. A device according to claim 1 wherein said pocket-forming means consists of side walls in overlapped relation at their inner ends, extend inwardly from opposite ends of the main wall, with the fold at the junction of the end portion and main wall extending across the bottom of said side walls.
