This invention relates .to improvements in receptacles and particularly boxes which are used asv containers for face powder, other cosmetics,
and the like, and the object of the invention is to provide a receptacle or box of this character which can be economically constructedand which will simulate the appearance of relatively thick metal.
Boxes of this character, and particularly the covers of such boxes, have heretofore been constructed by drawing or stamping a sheet of brass, or other metal, to the desired shape and form, the cover being adapted to iit the box or container for the material, with suitable ornamentation applied to the top of thev cover by engraving,
when such vcovers are stamped.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a box 'comprising a cover and/or a base formed of relatively thin sheet metal in which the verticalwalls of the cover and/or the base, and preferably the top and bottoml of the cover and base, are respectively re-enforced by Walls of brous material permanently secured thereto to provide a rigid construction of substantially the same rdurability as a receptacle or cover Wholly formed of metal.

The various embodiments oi' the invention illustrated herein comprise in common a receptacle and/or a cover'therefror formed of cup-shaped sheet metal,- with vertical walls of iibrous malil .for the bottom or certain-'of the forms illustrated being also provided with re-enforcing walls of fibrous material base of the receptacle and the top of the cover.

The stencils desirably are constructed to cover portions of the metallic shell so that after the coating of the boxes is completed and the stencils removed, the design will ,present areas of metal so that =the box cover-"will .simulate an ornamented metal cover.

Fig. 8 shows a construction comprising a receptacle having a base 39 with a vertical wall 40 extending upwardly therefrom and a shell 41 enclosing said base and wall, but bent to form a bead or extension 42 simulating a flange extending beyond the periphery of the base. per edge 43 of the base is turned over the upper edge of the Wall 40. A supplemental wall 44 fits within the wall 40 and extends above the upper edge thereof telescopically to engage the tcp. The top is of a construction similar to the bottom with the metal of the shell formed to present a bead or flange 45 extending around the top.
In the construction shown in Fig. 9 the base 46 extends beyond the periphery of the vertical wall 4'7 to provide an annular flange 48. A shell 49 of thin sheet metal is formed to fit and enclose the bottom, its projecting fiange, and the vertical wall 47, and is turned over the upper edge of the Wall.
In this construction the top comprises a cupshaped shell 50 which extends beyond the sides of the re-enforcing members 51 of fibrous material to form an annular bead 52. The lower edge of the shell is bent around the edge of the reenforcing member 51.
Fig. 10 illustrates a cover comprising a casing having a top 53 and a re-enforcing vertical wall 54 located at a sufficient distance from the periphery of the cover to provide a projecting flange 55. The sheet metal shell 56 vclosely fits the top of the cover and extends over the'flange 55 and encloses the vertical wall 54 with the edges of the shell bent over the edge of the vertical wall 54, thus presenting a flanged cover simulating a complete metal cover, but presenting a nicely rounded edge which 1s pleasing to the touch.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
A receptacle member comprising an integral self-sustaining shell of thin ductile sheet metal having a base and a peripheral flange extending vertically therefrom, and a reenforcing wall of sheet material fitting Within said peripheral flange and secured thereto by the inturned edge of said sheet metal flange.
