9 claims. V(o1. A14o- 118) This invention relates generally to wire-working tools, and particularly to a tool for splicing together the ends yof a pairof wires, and is a continuation in part of my co-pending application, Serial No. 660,918, led March 175, 1933 and entitled Wire splicer.
-My said application Serial No. 660,918 provides means for admirably connecting the ends of a pair of wires by splicing, but the splice made thereby leaves straight portions of wire between the terminal coils of `the splice.
It is an object of the present 'invention to provide means for making a splice in 'such a way that the straight wire portions between the terminal coils will also be coiled or twisted, so as to provide a neater, stronger, splice, more uniform in cross section.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description in connection with the drawing, wherein for purposes of illustration have shown a preferred embodiment.

Figure 3 is a top plan View showing a pair of Wires in place for producing the twist of the wire ,portions intermediate the terminal coils.

Figure 5 is a top plan view of a portion of the main body of the embodiment with the closure plate removed.
Figure 6 is a side elevational view of a splice produced by the said embodiment.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 refers generally to an elongated rectangular block which has in its top surface parallel to and adjacent to one longitudinal side thereof a rounded relatively deep groove 6 which extends ,from one end of the block to a point approximately the middle thereof where it opens into a relatively large half-moon opening 7. Traversing the block at oppositely right angles to the groove 6 and opening into the recess 'I and through the opposite side of the block is another relatively deep rounded groove 8. Similarly opening into the recess 7 next to the groove 8 is a third groove 8a, whose outward end opens through the opposite side of the block. It will be noted that the groove 8a is absent in the device which is the subject matter of my copending application Serial No. 660,918. This groove 8a enables the improvement in splicing referred to herein. v Y
` On the side of the block 5 opposite thehalfmoon recess 7 and having its apex traversed by 69 the groove 8 is the triangular-mainbody portion 9. This provides for adequate length of the groove 8 without unnecessarily widening the block 5. It will be noted'that the groove 8a opens through' the side of the block at the-point 05 where one side of 'the triangular projection 9 meets the longitudinalside of the block 5;
Mounted at the side-10i the groove 8 opposite the location of the groove 8a and pivoted to the upper surface of the block bymeans of the screw 705 12 is the swingable closure plate generally designated 13 which is formed of relatively thin metal in such shape and form as` to coincide with the shape of the top portion of the block 5 which it covers when in the closed position illustrated in Figures 3 and 4. yOne side of the closure 13 has a large clearance notch 19 which provides'access to the recess 7 when the plate is closed. The triangular portion of the closure plate 13 which overlies the vtriangular projection 9 is designated14, while a cut away portion 15 defines-the handleA 16. A second and smaller sight notch 18 is located outwardly of the relative'large notch 19.
In utilizing the embodiment of the present invention one of the wire ends 20 is located'in the groove 8a and the other wire end 21 inthe-groove 8. `A pliers generally designated 22 is used to hold the wires in side by side relationship and the body 5 is rotated to twist the wires as indicated at 21a to produce the intermediate twisted portion of the splice joint herein mentioned. After this has been completed, the wire 20 is bent laterally and disposed in the groove 6. The change of position from that shown in Figure 3 to that shown in Figure 4 is thus accomplished. The pliers 22 is then transferred from thev straight portions of the wire lying outward of the twisted portion 21a, to the portion 21a and the main body 9 rotated to produce the first of the terminal coils 25. When this terminal coil 25 has been produced, the wire ends 20, 21 are taken out of the device and the Wire ends remaining placed in the positions shown in Figure 4, with the pliers grasping the intermediate portion 21a, and the body 5 rotated to produce the second terminal coil 26, upon the completion of which the splice joint is finished, and has the form illustrated in Figure 6. It will be observed that the formation'of one of the terminal coils of wire ends, a block having a longitudinal groove and a pair of transverse grooves in one side thereof, one end of each of said grooves opening into a common recess, a closure plate movablyH connected to the same side ci theblock for positioning over said grooves ntohold'the Wire ends 2.
