Description

UNITED STATES LYDIA LAMPERT, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOISJ- WIRE TIGHTFlinn.l
Application filed June s, 1921.- seria; 116. 475,339.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LYDIA LAMBERT, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of-Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire ATighteners, of which the following is a speciication.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved form of wire tighten ing device for use in drawing up binding wires on various kinds of objects; toA provide an improved arrangement of means Ifor gripping the wires so as` to insure the retention of the tightener in place on the object without the use of auxiliary means; to provide an improved arrangement of means for permitting the connection of a tool for actuating said tightener; to provide a tightener which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and easy and effective in operation; and to provide a device embodying these characteristics which is especially adapted for use with wiresn on concrete mold work. v
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a section of a concrete mold showing a wire tightener constructed in accordance with this invention arranged in place thereon.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of a wire tightener constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the wire tightener showing the connection of the wire thereto and its peculiar relationship by which the tightener is retained in place on the form Without the use of auxiliary means.
A wire tightener constructed in accordance with this invention involves an oblong block of polygonal cross-section arrangedv to have wires secured at the ends thereof so that the wires are disposed perpendicularly to the support against which the block bears and between the edges of the face of the block which abuts against the support.
'Suitable means are also provided for the connect-ion of a tool for rotating the block.
In the specic form of tightener herein illustrated, the block 1 is of rectangular cross-section, upon the ends of which are arranged pairs of lugs 2. The pairs of lugs 2 are spaced apart so as to provide slots 3 and permit the twisting of a wire 4 around said lugs'in some such manner as indicated l in Fig. 3.
The faces of the block 1 vare'provided with recesses 5 which tends t0 `lighten'thefv device and also increase the gripping action of the yblock to the support against whichit bears.
Elongated slots '6 formed vin the recessed i portions of therfacesr of the block provide for the insertion of a tool by lwhich the block may be revolved.
The tightener herein trated is adapted to be used substantially described and 111115-V y in the following mannerz`The block `lfis placed up against the face 7 of a support 8, which in the drawings isa' post forming a part of a concrete-mold. The protruding ends 9 of the wire 4 are arranged around `the pairs of lugs 2 and through the,V slot 3 so as to insu-re a temporary gripping of the wires to the block. The block is thenl turned by hand arquarter turn or more, depending upon howl slack the wires l4 are, until the block bears fairlysnugly against the face 7 of the support 8. A suitable tool, preferably in the form of aflat bar, is inserted into the slot 6 and the block turned. The -temporary fulcrum of the block is one of the longitudinal edges which shifts upwardly as the block completes its' turn and allows another face thereof to be set against the face of the support 8.' The block is turned a quarter or half turn, (more if neci essary) depending upon the slackness of the wire 4 and the amount of yield that there is in the form or other object around which the wire extends. y The wire connected in this manner to the block securely holds the block in place upon the support without the use of .auxiliary means for the reason that the wire 4 is disposed perpendicularly to the face 7 of the support 8 between the edges 10` and 11 of the face which abuts against said support.
Although but one specic embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims. v
I claim:
1. A wire tightener comprising an oblong l portion of block so that a wire wrapped around said reduced part and extending perpendicular to said one block :tace will be disposed a substantial distance inwardly from the adjacent longitudinal edge of said one block face, whereby the block will hold the wire under tension without a locking device, and means on said blockV adapted to permit the connection of a tool to said block` for revolving the same.
2. Awire tightener, comprising an oblong block of polygonal cross-section adapted to bearr against the face of a support, and having slots formed in the ends adapted to grip a wire so that when the block is 'turned to take up the slack in the wire'said wire will be disposedperpendicularly to the face of the support intermediate the edges of the .face of said block which abuts against the support and means adapted to permit the connection of a tool to said block for revolvingthe same.
` A'wire tightener, comprising an oblong block of polygonal cross-section adapted to bear against the face of a support, and having slots ormedin the ends adapted to grip awire Vso that when the block is turned'to takeup the slack in the wire said wire will be disposedperpendicularly to the face of the support intermediate the edges of the face of said block which abuts against the support, saidblock having other slots arranged therein intermediate the ends and vadapted to permit the connection of a tool for revolving saidblock.
4. yAyr/ire tightener, comprising an oblong block of rectangular cross-section adapted to bear against the face of a support, a pair of lugs at each end of said block, said lugs being` spaced apart so as to form a slot between them and being adapted to have a wire connected-thereto so as to be disposed perpendicularly to the support intermediate the edges of the face of said block which abuts against the support, and means adapted to permit the connection of a tool to said block for revolving the same.
5. A wire tightener, comprising an oblong block of rectangular cross-section adapted to bear against` the face of a support a pair of lugs at each end of said block, said lugs being spaced apart so as to form a slot between them and being adapted to have a wire connected thereto so as to be disposed perpendicular-ly to the support intermediate the edges of the tace of said block which abuts against the support, said block having slots formed in the several faces thereof intermediate the ends and adapted to permit the insertion of a tool for revolving said block. l
6. A wire tightener, comprising an oblong block of rectangular cross-section adapted to bear against the face'of a support, said block having the faces thereof recessed longitudinally from end to end, a pair of lugs formed on each end of said block, the lugs of each pair being spaced apart sov as to form a slot therebetween and'being adapted to have awire" securedthereto so as to' be disposed perpei'idicularly to the face of the support intermediate the edges of the face of said block which abuts against the support, said block also having slots `formed in the faces thereof intermediate the ends and adapted to have a tool connected thereto for making the same.
Signed at Chicago this`3d day of June 1921'.
