This invention relates to an improved index device for guide cards, and more particularly to a construction including a practical holder for receiving a novel removable and replaceable index member. Accordingly, one'of the objects of the invention is to provide a novel and durable holder construction that may be applied to the upper edge of a guide card or separator, thereby to receive and 10 support an index member whose indicia bearing surface is disposed at an oblique angle to the body of the card, thereby making it possible to more readily view the index in examining the filing contents of the drawer. A further object of the invention is to provide a substantial and rigid construction capable of withstanding the more or less frequent handling of the guide cards incident to locating the desired section of the filing material. That isto say, it is proposed to provide a construction which lends itself to reinforcing the taub portion of the guide card which normally projects from the upper edge thereof so as to strengthen the card at this point and materially increase the life of the card in service. 7

: In its primary aspect, the invention includes in its organization the body member 1 provided at opposite edges thereof with the channels 2 and 3. As will be apparent from Figure 1 of the drawing, it is not essential that both of the channels 2 and 3 be formed integrally with the body 1, as illustrated, for example, in Figures 4, 5 and 6 I 2 Referring further to the construction of Fig-' ures 1, 2 and 3, it will be observed that the holder consists of the main body portion 1 above referred to and carrying the channel 2, and a supplemental body portion 1a carrying the channel 3, the portions 1 and It; being disposed respectively at the front and back of the tab portion T of the guide card C. The sheath or guard 7 99 is preferably made of. celluloid or equivalentnraterial and to insure that the same will not-be. collapsed under the pressure of. handling the. guide cards, by having its flanges sprung from disengagement with the said; channels of the holder, the same is preferably backed up by the label or a resilient indicia bearing member 9. This member is of substantially triangular or' three sided formation with the edges of the wings or walls at the point 10 suitably connected so that 9 the member will exert more or less outward pressure on the transparent sheath 7 to firmly hold it in place. While the member 9 may have the index material printed on one face thereof so as to be exposed through the upper oblique wall of the sheath '7, it will of course be understood that insofar as the invention is concerned the indicia may be one separate strip that is simply clamped between one wall of the backing member 9 and the inside face of the transparent sheath '7. In

In Figure 5, there is shown a form of holder wherein the body 10 is provided-With the flanges 20 and-3c formed integrally therewith; but the body 10, at the top edge'of the tab, is offset rearwardly as indicated at ll, thereby to step the holder rearwardly to substantially alinewith the rear face of the tab. .Also in this form-of construction theremay be used a reinforcement member 12 which may be of steel,--celluloid,cloth, or any other suitable material doubled or folded upon itself and placed astride the tabso that the wings thereof may besecured to the body of U the card by thefast'enings 13 or their equivalent.- The body 10 of the holder may be secured to the reinforcement and the tab by'the fastenings 4c, and one end of the-body may be provided with the abutment to prevent the guard from passing entirely through the same.

' The foregoing views-serve to-i1lustrate the range of modification that may be resorted to in providingaholder for supporting an indicia bear-- ing member and its protective sheath at the Icorrect angle to be readily observed'byanyonein placing or removing filing'material in thedrawer. The arrangement described also facilitates the" removal of labels as ,wellas thecelluloid window or sheath in the event that a different colorlabelor sheath is desired to replace the window or label[ Not only-does theofiset sheath or guard protect the label during manipulation and filing,- but at the same time the labels are protected from direct contact with the filing matter arranged between the guides.
