7 Glaims. (Cl. 41-33) My invention relates to decalcomanias.
It is, the object of my invention to provide a decalcomania that is easily detached from its temporary supporting back and applied to a per- `marient supporting surface; and which is impervious to the action of the elements and cleansing materials which may be appliedto it from time to time to clean the surface of its permanent sup mit. v i
It is a further object to provide a decalcomania in which the ink impressions of the design or the background of the design, or both, are provided with a supporting blanket of opaque material, such as white ink, which not only enhances the color values of the design above this white opaque sheet, but which enables this sheet to be applied to surfaces having other decalcomanias on it or other designs so that the old designs or old decalcomanias will not show through the new one of my invention.

It is a further object to provide means of arranging designs of diierent kinds, colors and materials so that the printing of one will not disturb the printing of the other or the results of the printing of the other and the two designs will be maintained in registration while, at the s ame time, having a common white backing coat for performing the foregoing results for both of the designs; and, in particular, it is my object to provide means of printing bronze, gold, silver and other designs which are easily disturbed by subsequent printings; of locating said designs of bronze, silver, etc., so that the bronze, silver, etc. will not be hidden by subsequentl designs, and then covering such designs with a lacquer, and
thereafter proceeding with the formation' of the decalcomania as .heretofore set forth- It is a further object of my invention to provide means of including a color design between layers of lacquer with the white backing being arranged only in the design as formed by the color impressions, thereby providing a design which, when transferred, white backing behind the color impressions, but the design elements are held together by the superimposed engaging lms of lacquer.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view broken away in successive layers to show the complete white coat over the color impressions and the area behas all the advantages of thetween the color impressions located between superimposed layers of lacquer;

Referring to the drawing in detail, 1 is the paper backing that is used as the temporary support for the decalcomania. This paper is coated with an adhesive'2 upon which is mounted a nitro-cellulose lacquer coat 3. This lacquer coat has printed thereon the design consisting of the ink impressions 4. over which is placed a sheet comprising a series of ink impressions of white ink designated 5. This White ink opaque' sheet is of sufficient density to not only bring out the design 4 and the values of the colors in that dem sign, but also it is of such thickness and opacity as to prevent any design beneath it after transfer from being seen through the decalcomania now under consideration. Mounted over thiswhite layer 5 is a nitro-cellulose lacquer layer 6 and on the back of the lacquer layer 6 is an adhesive layer 'I which is utilized for attaching the decalcomania to its permanent supporting surface. It will be understood that the adhesive 2 is oi the usual character that is water vsoluble enabling the decalcomania to be detached from the paper 1 or the paper i detached from the decalcomania.

ber to render the ink impressions 4 opaque and to bring out their color values and to give body to the designs and to retain the ink impressions in registration as there may be a plurality of colors employed in making up a single design. I then place the lacquer coat 6 over the entire sur- `face and lastly place the adhesive 7- on the surface of what will become the back of the decalcomania when it is mounted upon its permanent supporting surface. Thereupon, upon transfer, the designs 4 and 10 will be held in predetermined relationship between the lms of transparent lacquer 3 and 6 in their predetermined relationship to spell the words or to form any designs that may be desired.
It will be understood that my drawing is diagrammatic and is for the purpose of illustration only and is greatly exaggerated in lustrate the principles involved.
It will be further understood that when I refer to white opaque ink coats, to lacquers, to color coats and to bronze, gold, silver, etc., I comorder to ilprehend within my invention such modifications of materials and other details of executing the invention as may be within the range of those skilled in the art or necessary to adapt my invention to changing conditions of industry and commerce.
It will be further understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modiiicatiuns as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions and uses.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In combination, a temporary supporting medium, a soluble adhesive mounted thereon, a lacquer coat, an ink impression design printed thereon, an opaque'sheet covering said design and lacquer coat, a second lacquer coat and a coat of attaching adhesive.
2. In combination in a decalcomania of a lacquer coating, a design consisting oi ink impressions, an opaque backing of white ink for said design following the configurations thereof, a second lacquer coating printed coextensive with the rst lacquer coating and extending beyond said design and opaque backing therefor, a temporary support and water soluble adhesive for supporting said decalcomania on one of said incassa Aextensive therewith. a design printed on a por- -tion thereof in varnish, varnish adhering material superimposed on said design, a lacquer coat coextensive with said adhesive and said support covering said varnish and varnish adhering material in the design, a second design printed on said lacquer with ink, an opaque backing coextensive with the outlines of said sheet, a second coating of lacquer, and a permanently attached coating, of adhesive on the second coat of lacquer.
5. In combination in a decalcomania of a temporary support, a soluble adhesive thereon coextensive therewith, a design printed on a portion thereof in varnish,v varnish adhering material superimposed on said design, a lacquer coat coextensive with said adhesive and said support covering said varnish and varnish adhering ma'- 105 terial in the design, a second design printed on said lacquer with ink, anopaque backing coextensive with the outlines of said sheet, asecond coating of lacquer, and a permanently-attached coating of adhesive. on the second coat of lacquer, .110y

6. In combination in a decalcomania of a lacquer coat, a design printed in a gum material in tacky condition, a layer of gum adhering bronze-printedv thereo a second coat of lacquer, an ink impression design printed on the second coat of lacquer, a. third coat of lacquer, and
'means of attaching the decalcomania so formed to a permanentsurface.
7. In combination, a coat of lacquer, a design printed in varnish, bronze imprinted on 'said varnish design to which it will adhere without adhering to the lacquer, a second coat of lacquer, an ink impression design printed on the second 130 coat of lacquer, an opaque sheet of White ink adapted to cover the second coat of lacquer and the ink impression design, a third coat of lacquer, and a permanently attached adhesiva WILLIAM i
