9 Claims.
The invention relates to a bacon hanger.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of bacon hangers and to .provide a simple, practical and efficient bacon hanger of the comb clamp hanger type adapted 'to be readily applied to skinned and unskinned bacon bellies, wherein the side support is placed upon the lever supporting side "of the hanger rather than onthe hook side whereby the weight of the bacon belly will securely maintain the hanger clamp in engagement with the bacon belly. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a 'combclamp baconhanger'of thischaracter capable of automatically adjusting itself to a bacon belly .as the latter shrinks, whereby the upper engaged :end of the belly will be securely clamped and maintained in proper position at all'times.
With .these and other objects in view,'the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the claims hereto'ap- .25 pended, it being understood that various changes.
' in'the form, proportionand minor details of construction, within the scope of theclaims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the inventionxor sacrificing any 'of the advanta'ges thereof.
Inthe drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of a comb clamp bacon hanger constructed in accordance with this invention and "shown applied to a slab of .35 bacon.
Fig. 2is a front elevation of the same. Fig, 3 is an end view of the combhanger applied to a slab of bacon.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view onthe line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a perspective View of a comb bacon 'hangerfishown applied to a slab of bacon and illustrating another form of the invention.
Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the same.
Fig; Tisanend view of the comb bacon hanger shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view on the line 8--8 of Fig. 6.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 to i inclusive of the drawings, in which is illustrated one form of the invention, a comb bacon hanger which is .adapted to be applied to either skinned or unskinned bellies or slabs of bacon is illustrated in the said figures applied to a slab 1 from which all of theskin has been removedwith the exception of a narrow strip 2 which extends across the upper end of the slab. The comb clamp hanger comprises in its construction a substantially oblongframe composed of an upper rear horizontal pivot rod 3 and a lower front horizontal rod 4.50
connected at its terminals with the pivot rod 3 by substantially sigmoidally bent ends .5. The said oblong frame is preferably constructed of a single piece of rod metal or other suitable ma terial and the lower front horizontal rod which 5 the-skin and enableithe clamp to securelyengage and support the bacon without liability of mu-, g5 tilating or otherwise injuring the meat. The sigmoidal ends 5 which form. oppositely extend ing loops '7 and 3 in addition to connecting the pivot rod 3 and the jaw 4 form closures for the ends of the hanger and rearwardly oifset the pivot rod 3 from the vertical plane of the jaw l.
The pivot rod forms a fulcrum for a clamping lever constructed of rod metal or other suitable material which is coiled at spaced points at the ends of the hanger at s to form coils which con-. stitute bearing eyes for the clamping lever. The
pivot rod 3 passes through the coils 9 and the clamping lever is composed of a depending arm 10 and a forwardly extending approximately U- shaped arm 11 which is provided with an upgo wardly extending suspension hook 12. The depending arm 10 is composed of vertical end portions and a pair of spaced horizontal rods 13 preferably of a diameter less than the diameter of the metal of the body portion of the clamping. lever and constituting a jaw for cooperating with the jaw 4 to clamp the upper end of the slab of bacon.
A hook 12 is preferably formedby twisting the metal of the clamping lever to form a stout shank v greater than that of the back side and by hanging the bacon slightly oifcenter the said unequal contraction .is counteracted anda square shape is obtained.
The. comb clamp hanger is adapted .to be easily and quickly applied to a slab of bacon and when applied to the meat and subjected to the weight thereof, the weight of the meat will draw the clamping lever and the jaw of the frame, which is pivotally connected with the clamping lever, into proper clamping position on the meat as long as the same is suspended in the hanger.
As the meat shrinks the clamp will properly adjust itself to the meat so that the upper end of the slab or belly will always be held in proper position.
In Figs. 6 to 8 inclusive, is illustrated another form of the invention in which the substantially oblong frame 15 is provided with approximately inverted L-shaped end prongs 16 connecting the upper rear pivot rods 17 with the lower front rod 18. The lower front horizontal rod 18 which forms a jaw is provided with pointed inclined teeth or prongs 19 extending upwardly and inwardly from the jaw and adapted to penetrate the slab of bacon. The approximately inverted L- shaped ends 16 consists of upper horizontal portions and depending vertical portions which offset the pivot rod 17 rearwardly from the vertical plane of the jaw 18.
The horizontal pivot rod 17 has mounted on it a lever 20 constructed substantially the same as that heretofore described and comprising a forwardly extending approximately U-shaped arm and a depending approximately vertical arm and provided at the angle formed by the arm with coils 21 constituting bearing eyes and arranged on the pivot rod 1'7. The depending arm of the clamping lever is composed of vertical ends 22 and spaced parallel horizontal rods 23 of a diameter less than the diameter of the metal of the body portion of the lever. The horizontal rods 23 form a jaw for engaging the slab of bacon and they cooperate with the jaw 18 in firmly engaging and supporting the slab of bacon.
The horizontal portions of the inverted L- shaped arm 16 close the end of the hanger at the top and the ends 22 of the depending arm of the hanger are provided with forwardly extending approximately triangular loops 24 formed integral with the ends 22 and arranged transversely of the hanger and constituting closures for the lower portions of the ends of the hanger.
The forwardly extending approximately U- shaped arm of the clamping lever is provided with a hook 25 having a twisted shank 26 and located at one side of the center of the hanger similar to the suspension hook heretofore described.
