Renewed April 26, 1934 6 Claims. (Cl. 158115) This invention relates to 'safety devices for gas burners, the main object of the invention being to prevent accidents and death due to escaping gas in the event a cooking utensil boils over or the steam therefrom extinguishes the burner. x
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive device which may be posi tioned on. anyordinary gas burner and which will operate to ignite a burner in the eventthat it is extinguished by water or steam.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which of itself generates the maximum heat and is a real adjunct to the burner for the efficiency of the latter.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, all of which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating one form of my improved safety device in position on the cross type of gas burner;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view in longitudinal section on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in transverse section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
3 Figure 4 is a plan view illustrating a modified or curved form of my improved device on the curved portion of a gas burner; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in vertical section illustrating another modified form of my improved device for attachment to a burner having orifices in the sides or periphery thereof.
Referring more particularly to Figures 1, 2, and 3 of the drawing, 1 represents a gas burner of the general cross type having along its hollow members burner orifices 2 in the top wall thereof.
My improved safety device includes a cap, shield or dome 3 which, to avoid repetition of terminology, will hereinafter be referred to as a shield. This shield 3 is elongated, is preferably curved transversely and is formed with open ends 4, with the extremities 5 of the shield overlying the openings in the extremities. This shield 3 rests upon the burner 1 and has its side edges preferably fiared outwardly, as indicated at 6 to deflect from the burner orifices water falling thereon.
7 represents a tube which is of arched or general inverted U-shape and which at its intermediate portions is secured to and constitutes a fixed part of the shield. A convenient manner of connecting the parts is by the employment of spot welding and,'of course,the invention is not limited to the particular manner of connecting the tube and shield. The end portions 8 of the tube '7 are disposed vertically and are adapted to be projected into the orifices 2 of the burner 1. The extremities of these ends 8 may be slightly reduced in diameter or tapered, as indicated at 9, to facilitate their entrance into the burner orifices, but in any event it is to be understood that these extremities of the tubes- 7 are so fitted in the orifices that they receive the supply of gas which is burnt at orifices 10 in the lower wall of the horizontal portion of said tube. Thus, it will be seen that when my improved device is in position on the burner and the burner is ignited there will be within the shield 3 a plurality of jets of flame from the burner and a plurality of downwardly burning jets from the tube 7. These last named jets not only constitute pilots to ignite the gas in the burner, in the event that it is extinguished by an overflow of water or steam, but they also serve to facilitate heating of the shield and the air, and products of combustion escaping through the ends thereof. In other words, within the shield itself there is a complete combustion and a clear and full circulation, so that this device functions not only to ignite the burner in the event that it is extinguished by water or steam, but also is a real adjunct or aid to the complete combustion.
In the modified form of the invention, illustrated in Figure 4, the shield 11, corresponding to the shield 3, is curved longitudinally, as is also the tube 12 corresponding to the tube 7. This curvature of the shield is in order to cause the latter to properly fit and position itself on the curved type of burner 13.
The modified form of burner illustrated in Figure 5 is adapted to be used in connection with a burner 14 which has orifices 15 in its side wall or periphery. In this modification the shield 16, corresponding to the shields 3 and 12, has an underlying lip or projection 17 which fits under the burner 14 and the extremities 18 of a tube 19, corresponding to the tubes 7 and 12, are bent at right angles so as to be projected into the orifices 15.
In all of the forms of my invention I employ a shield with a burner tube under the shield so that in the event the major portions of the burner orifices are attacked by overflow of water or steam to extinguish the flames issuing therefrom a certain number of these orifices will be fully protected, and even if these orifices under the shield are extinguished, still the flames issuing from the orifices in the tube will not be extinguished and they will again ignite the burner as soon as the attack of water and steam is ended.
While I have illustrated. what I believe to be the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be distinctly understood that various slight changes may be made with regard to the form and arrangements of parts without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make'such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. A safety device of the character described,
including a shield having openings in its ends, and a tube fixed in the shield, the extremities of the tube projecting downwardly from the shield and adapted to be positioned in orifices of a gas burner, said tube having burner orifices in its horizontal portion.
2. A safety device of the character described comprising an elongated shield adapted to rest upon a gas burner having tubular orifices therein and cover some of the orifices of the burner, said shield having openings in its ends, a burner tube of general inverted U-shape in the shield, the extremities of said tube adapted to be projected through orifices in the burner, and said 35 upon a gas burner having burner orifices there- 40 in and cover some of the orifices of the burner,
said shield having openings in its ends, a burner tube of general inverted U-shape in the shield, the extremities of said tube adapted to be pro- J'ected through orifices in the burner, said tube having burner orifices in the lower wall of its intermediate portion, and a tongue on the lower edge of the shield adapted to project under the burner.
4. A safety device of the character stated for gas burners having burner orifices therein, said device including a shield adapted to be positioned on the gas burner and having side portions engaging walls of the burner to enclose certain of the burner orifices, said shield having openings in its ends, and a burner tube fixed to the shield and communicating with one of the orifices in the burner.
5. A safety device of the character stated for gas burners having burner orifices therein, said device including a shield adapted to be positioned on the gas burner and enclose certain of the burner orifices, said shield having openings in its ends, a burner tube fixed in the shield, the extremities of the tube projecting downwardly from the shield and adapted to be posi- 100 tioned in orifices of the gas burner, said tube having burner orifices in its horizontal portion.
6. A safety device of the character stated for gas burners having burner orifices therein, said device comprising an elongated shield, the side 5 portion thereof adapted to engage the gas burner so that the shield covers a number of orifices in the burner, said shield having openings in the lowerportions of its ends, and a burner tube fixed at its intermediate portion in the top 110 of the shield and having downwardly projecting extremities adapted to be positioned in orifices of the burner, said last mentioned tubehaving burner orifices in its intermediate portion.
