Our invention relates to that class of machines for illustrating movement in connection with accompanying sounds, and an object of our invention, among others, is the production of a machine of this type that shall be extremely simple in construction and particularly eflicient in the results obtained from its operation.
One form of. a machine embodying our invention and in the construction and operation of which the objects herein set out, as well as others,
may be attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view looking down on our improved apparatus, with parts in section, and with other parts omitted for clearness of illustration.

Figure 4 is a view in section on a plane denoted by the dotted line 4--4 of Figure 1.

This invention contemplates the simultaneous taking of motion pictures and recording of sounds incident to the subject of such pictures, and to the simultaneous reproduction of said pictures and sounds, the mechanism herein shown being particularly efiicient and effective in synchronizing themovement and sounds so that they will appear in complete harmony each with the other.
Such mechanism embodies means for supplying power to drive the mechanism, such being shown herein as an electric motor '7 to the shaft of which one member 8 of a clutch is secured. This clutch may be of any approved type in which the two clutch members are forced together for clutching operation, as by means of a spring 9 on the motor shaft. The other member of the clutch is secured to a driving shaft 10 mounted in bearings in standards rising from a base plate 11,
these standards 12-13 being shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings.
A worm 14 on the driving shaft 10 meshes with i a worm wheel 15 secured to a record supporting shaft 16 vertically mounted in a step bearing in a frame to be hereinafter mentioned, said'shaft being supported at its upper end in a bearing in an arm 1'1 secured to and extending from a housing 18 ,tobe more particularly hereinafter referred to. A tum-table 19 is secured to the upper endof the shaft 16, and this turn-table may be a record for recording or reproducing sound, or it may be a base to receive adisc for such purposes. It will be understood that a stylus is supported for engagement with the record or disc, the arm for supporting the stylus being of any ordinary construction to effect transmission of sounds, these parts having been omitted from the showing herein as not necessary to a thorough understanding of the invention.
The worm 14 is also in mesh with a worm pinion 20 secured to a camera driving shaft 21 supported at one end in a bearing in the standard 13 and intermediate its ends in a bearing frame 22 supported by and rising from the base plate 11. The opposite end of the shaft 21 is supported in a bearing in the housing or projection box 18 and the stud bearing disc 23 of a Geneva movement is secured to this shaft 21 and operates in connection with notched wheels 24-25, constituting the other members of the Geneva movements, to impart step-by-step or intermittent rotation to film operating shafts 26--27 to which said notched wheels are secured and which are rotatively mounted in bearings in the housing or projection box 18, said shafts having pin feed wheels 29 for engaging a strip of film 28 to move the latter through the housing or projection box 18 and through a gate 30 sheltered within the housing, the pins on the wheels engaging within perforations near opposite edges of the strip in an ordinary manner. The housing may be equipped with the usual'lamp 31, reflector 32, lens 33 and other devices common to apparatus of this sort employed in the taking of pictures or in the projection thereof.
Detector arms 34 are pivotally mounted in brackets 35 secured to a wall of the projection box 18, and as shown in Figure 2. A detector bar 36 is-supported by said arms at their outer ends, and the opposite ends of said arms are secured to a detector shaft 37 comprising the pivots just mentioned. This shaft 3'1 extends for some distance from the housing 18 and has a bearing inthe outer end of the arm 1'1. The outer end of the shaft 37 has a finger 38 pivotally attached to one end of a connecting rod 39, the opposite end of said rod being pivotally attached to one end of a clutch actuating lever 40, the opposite end of said lever resting in proximity to the clutch member 8 of the clutch and operating when a fllm breaks, and the. bar 36 swings inwardly, to press the clutch members apart and thus disconnect 1 5 the operating mechanism from the motor or driving member.
Supporting feed wheels 41-42 are secured to I feed wheel shafts 43-44 extending into slots in T boxes 45 located at each end 1 each shaft and m 5',-
secured to the projection box 18, projecting forwardly from said projection box. The shafts are rotatably mounted in bearing blocks 46 in the boxes, said blocks being spring pressed to force the supporting feed wheels toward the pin wheels, in a manner common to structures of this class.
The reflector 32 is adjustably mounted in the projection box 18 as by means of an adjusting screw 47 screw threadedly engaged with a supporting sleeve 48 secured to the projection box, and as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. The position of the reflector governs the intensity of the light which is projected through a tubular shield 49 extending forwardly from the front of the projection box 18. s
A fan 50 is rotatably mounted within the projection box adjacent to an opening 51 through the wall of the projection box, said fan being driven as by means of a belt passed around pulleys on the feed shaft and motor shaft, and as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. An air valve 52 is rotatably mounted on the wall of the projection box and is shaped to cover the slot or opening 51 to a greater or lesser extent for the purpose of regulating the amount of air that is admitted to the projection box 18. To this end the slot 51 is of arcuate shape and the valve 52 has a similarly shaped slot positioned to register with the slot 51 to a greater or lesser extent depending upon the position of the valve.
The feed wheels 41-42 are provided with holes about their periphery spaced apart to receive the pins projecting from the pin wheels 29 whereby the film is fed by force applied to each side of the gate 30 and the pins are held in certain engagement with the perforations in the film.
It will be understood that a shutter for intermittently obscuring the light through pauses in movement of the film and other devices and mechanisms common to moving picture apparatus will be employed, these not being shown herein as they are unnecessary to a thorough understanding of the invention.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes we have described the principles of operation of our invention, together with the device which we now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but we desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative, and that the invention may be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set out.
We claim:
1. A talking and moving picture machine including a record supporting member, a film operating mechanism including a feeding disk, a motor, a worm shaft driven by the motor and having a single worm, a record supporting shaft for said member, a film mechanism operating shaft directly engaged with said disk, and a worm wheel on each of the two shafts last mentioned, said worm wheels being both engaged with the worm on said worm shaft.
2. A talking and moving picture machine including a record supporting member, a film operating mechanism including a feeding disk, a
motor, a worm shaft driven by the motor and having a single worm, a record supporting shaft for said member and afllm mechanism operating shaft directly engaged with said disk extending transversely one to the other, and a worm wheel on each of the two shafts last mentioned, said worm wheels being both engaged with said worm on said worm shaft.
3. A talking and moving picture machine including a record supporting member, a film operating mechanism including a feeding disk, 2. motor, a worm shaft driven by the motor and having a single worm, a record supporting shaft for said member, a film mechanism operating shaft directly engaged with said disk, and a worm wheel on each of the two shafts last mentioned, said worm wheels being both engaged with the worm on said worm shaft at points located substantially ninety degrees one from the other.
4. A talking and moving picture machine including a record supporting member, a film operating mechanism including a feeding disk, 21. motor, a worm shaft driven by the motor and having a single worm, a record supporting shaft for said member, a film mechanism operating shaft directly engaged with said disk, both of said last mentioned shafts having their axes extending in the same plane, and a worm wheel on each of the two shafts last mentioned, said worm wheels being both engaged with the worm on said worm shaft on different sides thereof.
5. A talking and moving picture machine comprising a record supporting member, a film operating mechanism including means for feeding a film, a motor including a motor operated shaft, a driving shaft, a clutch upon said operating and driving shafts, a driven shaft rigidly connected with said record supporting member, a worm and worm wheel unit engaging said driving and driven shafts, a driven shaft for said film feeding mechanism, a worm and worm wheel immediately connecting said unit driven and said driving shafts, an indicator arm resting against said film, and a connection between said arm and said clutch for operation at the latter upon the breaking of a film to permit movement of said arm.

A talking and moving picture machine comprising a record supporting member, a film operating mechanism including means for feeding a film, a motor including an operating shaft, 9. driving shaft, a clutch between said cperating and driving shafts, a driven shaft rigidly connected with said record supporting member, a worm and worm wheel immediately connecting said driving and driven shafts, a driven shaft for said film feeding mechanism, a worm and worm wheel immediately connecting said driving and film unit driven shafts, a pair of pivotaliy mounted indicator arms, a bar connecting said arms to rest against said film, and a connection between said arms and said clutch for operation of the latter on the breaking of a film to permit movement of said arms.
