This invention relates to paper'machinery and more particularly to machines for slotting, scoring and folding blanks of corrugated board or the like in the production of folding boxes or cartons. The object of the invention is to slot, score and fold corrugated' board blanks in continuous and automaticv operations avoiding intermediate handling of the blank during the separate operations thereon, in order that the blanks are handled and operated upon automatically from the point of feeding the same into the machine to collecting and stacking them prior to being taped. The rst operation to be performed upon a corrugated board blank according to this invention, after the blank has been cut to a desired size,` is to pass it through the slot forming devices. These devices consist of a number of sets of slotting headsv usually three in number. Each set consists of an upper slotting head 11. vThe upper slotting head 10 carries thereon the slotting knives 12 and 13 constructed as is well V.understood in the art. The lower slotting head 11 is provided with a suitable groove 14 to accommodate the knives 12 and 13 and cooperate in forming the slots. A corrugated board blank usually embodies three sets of slots, the 00 slots of each set being joined by a score line to provide the folding lines of the blank when shaped to box formation. This is well illustrated in Fig. 8. It is purposed to form only the central score line by a set of scorers such as'are shown in the 65 said pending application and inasmuch as the construction thereof is well known, the same is not here described. The blanks, after being slotted, are ejected from the slotter into the scoring and conveying devices 15, two sets of such scoring .and conveying devices are shown and are adapted to operate at opposite sides of the blanks. The scoring and conveying devices are mounted upon the upright 16 which carries the shaft 17 upon which is slid- 75 ably mounted the plates 18. Each scoring and conveying device is provided with a desired number of scoring implements 19 and for the purpose of illustration four sets of scoring implements are shown upon each of the scoring and conveying devices l15. The scoring implements 19 comprise the iixed arm 20 secured to `the plates 18, and the movable arm' 21 supported by the link 22, which link 22 is connected with link 23 and which link 23 is supported upon cured to the arm plate 18. Ihe arm actuator 25 is positioned between the movable arm 21 and the iixed arm 24 secured at its rear end to the pivotal point of the rear center links 22, 23 and near its forwardend to the forward set of links. The said arm is also supported in the brackets 26 depending from the fixed arm 24. The said arm 25 is provided at its forward end with a wheel 27 and between the links with a spring 28, which exerts pressure upon the arm 25 to outwardly projected position as shown in Fig. 7. inasmuch as leachA of the scoring implements are of the same construction the foregoing description ci one set is deemed sumcient. The scoring and conveying devices are given a rotating motion by the driving mechanism which consists of the tooth wheel 29 secured by a set screw to the shaft 17, thepawl 30 pivotally mounted on the arm 31, supported on the shaft 17 and the driving rod 32 receiving reciprocating motion from the driving shaft .33 through the crank 34. The Awheels 27 normally project beyond the arc described by the tracks 35 and as the devices rotate the said wheels come into' contact with the tracks 35 110 the fixed arm -24 se- 85 whereby pressure is exerted upon the links cause ing them to align and force the movable scor ing arm 21 downwardly against the corrugated board blank which has been ejected from between the slotting heads 10 and l1 between the fixed arm 20 and the said movable arm 21. The scoring implements continue to firmly hold the corrugated box blank during the entire period that the wheels 27 are engaged with the tracks 35. A folding device 36 projects upwardly from the plate 18, having its forward ends 37 curved outwardly as shown in Fig. 2. The ends of the box blank in the course of their movement engage with the said curved portions 37 of the folders 36 and thereby are pressed inwardly. Inasrnuch as the blank during its movement against the folders 36 is firmly held by the scoring arms 20 and 21 its line of fold is defined by the edges 38 and 39 of the scoring implements. The blank after it has passed through the complete arc of the tracks 35 is released from the grasp of the folding implements by the action of the spring 28 whereby it causes the links 22 and 23 vto collapse and raise the movable arm 21 as soon as the wheels 27 slide off the tracks 35. The blank after it is released from the pressure of the arms 20 and 21 moves into alignment with the endless conveyor 40 and is 'pushed from between the arms 20 and 21 by the ejector 41, the upper end 42 of which comes into contact with the middle portion of the blank. The blank as soon as released from the grip of the arms 20 and 21 falls, from its position on the arm 20, upon the arm 21 and may thereby be freely slid on said arm 21 and clear the finger 54. The ejector 41 is pivotally mounted at 42 and receives reciprocating motion through the link 43 and the connecting rod 44 provided with a wheel 45 at one end thereof riding on the surface of the cam 46, which is attached to the shaft 33 and rotates therewith. The ejector 41 is retained in retracted position by the influence of spring 47. The box blank when it is ejected from the scoring implements has its ends standing upwardly, as shown to the left of Fig. 1, and is guided in its movement with the endless conveyor 40 by the guides 48 which form continuation of the folders 36. The upward' standing ends of the blank come into contact with the supplemental folders 4 9, which are curved inwardly and downwardly, so as to gradually force the sides of the blank toward each other, as shown in Fig. 6. The blank after it is free of the ends of the supplemental folders 49 is carried by the endless conveyor beneath the pressers 50. These pressers have a gradual downward inclination 'and are constantly rotated and in the course of their rotation contact with the folded sides of the blank, inside of their fold lines, and force the ends of the blanks into a substantially flat position on top of the middle portion thereof. The pressers 50 are driven through the gears 51 from a suitable course of power through the driving shaft 52.l
vThe box blank, when it is ejected from between the slotting heads 10 and 11, moves fairly rapidly and is thereby 'shot between the scoring implements 20 and 21 striking against the inner edges 53 of the plates 18. So that the blank will not rebound from beneath the scoring implements, a finger 54 is attached to the fixed arm 21 with its upper end 55 projecting partly into the space between the two arms 20 and 21. This finger is given resilient action by the spring 56, one end of whichv is secured to the linger and the other end to the arm 20. The blank is guided at its end edges into the space between the arms 20 and 21 by the side guides 57. Should the rear edge of the blank not rest closely against the edge 53 of the plate 18, when it is rst in# troduced between the arms 20 and 21, it will assume this position as it is carried toward the track 35 by reason of the inclined angle which the scoring and conveying devices assume While approaching the said track.
- 'I'he scoring and conveying devices are made adjustable toward, and from one another, in order to accommodate blanks of different sizes, by the arrangement shown in Fig. 9, which comprises a tooth rack 58 secured to the shaft 17 and the cooperating pinion 59 mounted on the plate 18. The shaft 60 upon which the pinion 59 is mounted is provided with a square head to fit the socket of the separable handrtool 61 whereby the scoring and conveying devices may be adjusted to different positions. rIhe guides 57 are likewise made adjustable by loosening the clamps 62 and sliding them along a slot (not shown) formed in the plate 63. The slotters 10 and 11 must also partake of the adjustment of the conveyors, means for effecting the same being shown in the pending application. 'Ihe machine as shown is intended to accommodate the largest size of blanks and it therefore will ordinarily not be necessary to shift the folders 36 and the supplemental folders 49, but should such an adjustment be desirable it can readily be provided by the type of clamping device, shown in Fig. 6.
It' is preferred to form the upper scoring arm 2l with a straight face and the lower scoring arm with a bead 64 as shown in Fig. 8. Although both of these faces may be made straight, inasmuch as they will, with straight faces, sufficiently hold the board at the line at which the fold is to be made to insure a proper fold.
The revolving motion of the scoring and conveying devices slows up at the moment that the blank is ejected from the slotting heads, inasmuch as the pawl 30 has not commenced its forward movement at the moment when the blank is ejected between the scorirs: device from the slotting heads.
In the modification shown in Fig. 11, a separate delivery device is illustrated for delivering the blanks from the slotting mechanism to the conveying, scoring and folding mechanism. The said device comprises an endless belt 65 mounted upon the rollers 66, one of which is driven by the beltl 67 through the pulley 68 from the main drive shaft 33 of the slotting device. The separate delivery device is intended to run at a higher rate of speed than the slotters or the conveying, scoring and folding mechanism in order to increase the speed with which the blanks are shot between the arms 20 and 21 and for this purpose the relative size of the roller 65 and the pulley 68 must be predetermined to effect such speed.
I claim:
l. In a machine for making-box blanks, means for slotting a blank on opposite edges, a conveyor adapted to receive the blanks slotted by said slotting means and convey the blanks out of the plane from Vwhich they issue from said slotting means, scoring implements and a folder adapted to bend the ends of the blank along the crease line.
2. In a machine for making box blanks, means for slotting a blank on opposite edges, a conveyor adapted to receive the blanks slotted by said slotting means, scoring implements, said scoring implements comprising a pair of substantially parallel arms having relative movement, said arms during the travel o'f the conveyor closing upon said blank along a predetermined line, a
folder adapted to bend the ends of the blank along to complete said bending operation.
4. In a machine for making box blanks, means for slotting a blank on opposite edges, a conveyorv adapted to receive the blanks slotted by said slotting means and convey the blanks out of the plane from-which they issue from said slott'ing means, scoring implements, a folder adapted to bend the ends of the blank at an angle to the middle portion, and supplemental folders adapted to complete said bending operation and rotary pressers to force the bent ends of the blank upon the middle portion thereof.
5. In a machine for making box blanks, a conveyor having a set of scoringimplements mounted to operate in conjunction therewith, said scoring implements comprising a pair of scoring arms having relative movement and adapted by pressure upon a previously slotted box blank to define the line upon which same is to be folded, a folder adapted to bend the ends of the blanks along the said folded line while the blank is held by said scoring implements and means to lay the folded ends of the blank over the middle section thereof.
.6. In a machine for making box blanks, a pair of spaced conveyors adapted to receive previously slotted blanks, said conveyors having a set of scoring implements mounted thereon to move in conjunction therewith, each of said scoring implements comprising a pair of scorers having relative movement, said scorers being adapted to hold the blank during movement of` the conveyors, an actuator for one arm of each set of said scorers and moving with said arms, tracks in the path of the actuators, said actuators by contact with said v tracks moving one arm of each set of scorers there'- tive movement, said scorers by forcing the scorers against said blank, folders in the path of the ends of the said blank, said folders pressing upon said blank and forcing it to an angular position with respecttc the middle portion thereof, means to separate said arms, a second conveyor for carrying said blanks from said nrst mentioned conveyor and supplemental folders to force the ends of said blank downwardly toward the middle portion thereof.

In a machine for making box blanks, a vpair of spaced conveyors adapted to receive previously slotted blanks, said conveyors having a set of scoring implements mounted thereon to move in conjunction therewith, each of said scoring implements comprising a pair of vscorers having relabeing adapted to hold the blank during movement of the conveyors, an actuator for one arm of each set of said scorers and moving with said arms, tracks in the path of the actuators, said actuators by contact with said tracks moving one arm of each set -of scorers thereby forcing the scorers against said blank, folders in the path of the ends of the said blank. said folders pressing upon said blank' and forcing it to an angular position with respect to the middle portion thereof, means to separate said arms,
a second conveyor for carrying said blanks from said iirst mentioned conveyor and supplemental folders to force the ends of said blank downwardly toward the middle portion thereof and means to vary the distance apartof said conveyors to accommodate blanks of different sizes.
8.v In a machine for making box blanks, means for slotting a blank on opposite edges, a delivery device adapted to receive the blanks from said slotting means, a conveyor adapted to receive the blanks from said delivery device, scoring implements and a folder adapted to bend the ends of the blank along the scoring line, said delivery device being driven at a higher rate of speed than the slotting means.
9. In a machine of the character described. a scoring and conveying device comprising a series of pairs of scoring implements, at least one implement of each. pair being movable toward and from the other implement of 'said pair, means for rotating the pairs of implements about a common axis and means for feeding blanks into position between the respective pairs of implements.
10. A machine of the character described, a scoring. and conveying member, means for rotating said member, a pair of scoring implements carried by said member and means for moving one y scoring implement with respect to the other.
11. In a machine for scoring corrugated board box blanks, a rotating carrier, a plurality of scoring implements arranged around said carrier and means to cause said scoring implements to move against the blanks and scoresaid blanks during rotation.
12. In a machine for scoring corrugated board box blanks, a rotating carrier, a plurality of scoring imp'xements arranged around said carrier and means to cause said scoring implements to move against the blanks and score said blanks during rotation and folding devices adapted to raise the ends of the blanks and 'fold the same after the blanks have been scored.
13. In a machine for scoring corrugated board box blanks, a rotating carrier, a plurality of scoring implements carried by said carrier at the opposite sides of said carrier, each scoring implement comprising two oppositely positioned members, said members being adapted to receive Va boxblank therebetween, said members being said .implements retaining the blank immovable therebetween during rotation of the carrier.
14. In a machine for scoring corrugated board box blanks, a rotating carrier, a. plurality of scoring implements carried by said carrier at the opposite sides of said carrier, each scoring implement comprising two oppositely positioned` members, said members being adapted to receive a box blanktherebetwe'en, said members being relatively movable against the box blank and during such movement scoring the box blank, said implements retaining the between during rotation of the carrier and folding meansadapted to fold the ends of the blank after the blank. has been scored and while the blank is held by the scoring implements.
