FOOT FOR GLIDER SWINGS Filed Dec. 28, 1933 Z0 7 gwuc WW CHO /"Incann Patented July 10, 1934 1,966,355 -FOOT 'FOR GLIDER swINGs Carl H. Oermann, York, Pa. Application-December 28,1933, Serial No. 704,325
7 Claims.
This invention'relates to glider structures and more particularly to porch gliders and means to prevent scratching of floor structures by such gliders. '5 An object of this invention is to provide a cushioning foot which may be mounted on the legs or bottom of the glider so as to prevent injury by the glider of a floor and also to prevent injury of the foot or other portion of the user of the glider upon bumping the ends of the legs during the movement of the glider.
Another object of this invention is to provide a cushioning means which is of reversible construction so that it can be used on any of the legs of a glider so as to resiliently resist movement of the glider relative to the floor or plane surface upon which the glider is resting.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of an end member for a glider swing having feet mounted on the bottom thereof constructed according to the embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section taken substantially through the center of one of 3 the feet and showing the bottom rail of the end member in fragmentary form.
Figure 3 is a topplan of one of the feet.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 44 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally an end of a glider structure which, in the present instance, is shown in fragmentary form and is provided with uprights 11 connected together by means of a lower plate 13, and the bottom ends of the uprights 11 are secured to a foot bar 12 by means of securing members 14 or the like. These uprights 11 and the foot bar 12, in the present instance, are made of angle iron and the foot bar 12 has one flange 15 thereof horizontal and the other flange 16 vertical. The opposite ends of the foot bar 12 are each provided with an extension 17 which is integral with the flange 15.
A cushioning member or foot-piece, generally designated as 18, engages the extension 17, there being one extension at each end of each foot bar 12. The cushioning foot-piece 18 comprises a body 19 provided with a socket 20 within which the extension ll'is received and afloor engaging .lug 21 isintegral with the body l9rand extends therbelow. 'Thefoot-piece 18, in the present instance, is preferably made of rubber or similar cushioning material, and the button or knob 21 is adapted to engage the floor of a porch or other plane surface, and is so constructed relative to the body 19, that the button 21 will lie relatively flat on the surface engaged by the glider.
The body 19 has on opposite sides thereof vertically extending wings 22 which are yieldable and when the foot-piece 18 is in applied position, one wing 22 will abut against the vertical flange 16 of the foot bar 12 while the other wing 22a will be disposed inwardly of the vertical flange 16 and constitutes a guard member to prevent contact by a foot or other member of the user of the glider with the foot bar 12 in a manner to injure the user of the glider.
In the use of the device hereinbefore described, the cushioning member 18 is adapted to be mounted on the foot bar 12 and, in the present construction of gliders, there will be four of these foot members on each glider, two at each end of the glider. The bar extension 17 is adapted to engage in the socket 20 of the body 19. As the glider is being used, the button 21 will yieldably engage the surface on which the glider is mounted and will prevent movement of the glider relative to the surface on which the glider is mounted.
It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:-
1. A foot comprising a body having an elongated flat socket therein, a button on the bottom of the body, and a pair of upstanding wings integral with the body and extending upwardly from the opposite sides of the body.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a foot comprising a cushioning body having an elongated rectangular shaped socket therein, a button on the bottom of the body, and a pair of upstanding yieldable wings integral with the body and extending upwardly from the opposite sides thereof.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a foot comprising a yieldable body having a substantially rectangular shaped socket therein extending substantially horizontally of the body, a button extending downwardly from the body, and a pair of wings extending upwardly from the opposite sides of the body.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a foot comprising a cushioning body having a socket therein extending substantially horizontally from one end of the body and opening through said one end, a button extending below the body and disposed adjacent the opposite end thereof, and a pair of wings extending upwardly from the opposite sides of the body and disposed longitudinally thereof.
5. In combination with a glider swing having end members and a bottom bar disposed in substantially horizontal position, an extension integral with each end of the bar, said extension being substantially horizontal, and a cushioning foot engaging each extension, said foot comprising a yieldable body having a rectangular-shaped socket extending substantially horizontally of the body and opening through one end thereof, a button on the bottom of the body, and a pair of wings extending upwardly of each side of the body.
6. In combination with a glider swing having end members and an angle bar on the bottom of each end member disposed in substantially a horizontal position, a relatively flat extension integral with each bar and a cushioning foot for each extension, said foot comprising a yieldable body having a substantially rectangular-shaped socket extending longitudinally of the body and opening through one end thereof, a button disposed on the bottom of the body adjacent the opposite end, a wing member extending upwardly of one side of the body and abutting against the outer end of the vertical flange of said angle bar, and a second wing member constituting a guard extending upwardly of the other side of the body and disposed in spaced relation to the first wing.
'7. As a new article of manufacture, a foot comprising a cushioning body having an elongated rectangular shaped socket therein, and a pair of upstanding yieldable wings integral with the body and extending upwardly from the opposite sides thereof.
