HAND OPERATED LOCK original Filed March 12, 1925 2 sheets-sheet- 2 fill/14155141111( J f zg. 6 95 124 @Mw/Mio@ Patented July 10, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE HAND OPERATED LOCK John Holtzman, New York, N. Y.
14 Claims.
My invention relates to hand operated locks, of
a type suitable for use upon doors and the like,
my improved lock having a number of bolts movable relatively to each other, and coacting with each other and with other parts, in order to increase the security and efciency of the lock.
This application is a division of my pending application for patent upon door locks, Serial No. 14,980, led March 12, 1925.
Reference is made to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like letters indicate like Vparts throughout all of the gures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through my improved lock, and is taken upon the line 1-1 of Figure 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 4 is a plan View of a knob forming a part of my improved lock.
Figure 5 is a perspective of the lock casing.
Figure 6 is a plan view of the key used in connection with my lock.
Figure 7 is an edge elevation of the key.
A casing 90 is provided with a front plate 91, having side and end walls 92, and also inwardly extending walls 93. The casing also has a flange 94, located upon its under side and partially covering the bottom, toward the front.
A plate 95 extends over the inner side of the flange 94, and is attached by screws to bosses in the casing, so as to form a complete bottom wall.
A knob 96 is revolubly mounted in the fro-nt plate 91, and is provided with a stem 97, the latter having an axial bore 98. Rigidly mounted on the stem is a double ended lever, one end 99 of same being disposed in the plane of its hub and the other end 100 oiset, for a purpose hereinafter described.
vAn inner casing 101, shown more particularly in Figure 5, having side walls 102 and 103 and edge walls 104 is slidably mounted within the casing 90, the edge walls 104 being in contact with the side walls 92 of the casing. One of the side walls, 103, is in contact with the bottom plate 95, and the other side wall 102 being guided by the cover plate 91. The side Walls 102 and 103 are provided respectively'with recesses extending from their rear ends, as'shown at 105, and leading from these recesses are a pair of shorter recesses 106 and 107,
extending transversely, the entrances to these last mentioned recesses being beveled as shown in Figure 5.
Referring to Figure 1, it will be noted that the arm 99 is adapted to enter the recess 106 whenever the knob 96 is rotated, but the oiTset arm 100 does not enter the recess just mentioned. The arm 100, being in a plane diierent from that of the side wall 102, simply moves idly along the surface of this side wall.
Three separate bolts are used in my lock, namely, a center bolt 108 and a pair of side bolts 109 and 110. The center bolt 108 is provided with a centrally disposed elongated slot 111, through which extends a pin 112, fixed in the side plates 102 and 103 to guide and limit the bolt in its movement in its relation to the inner casing.
A pair of arms 113 and 114, spaced apart, extend rearwardly from the bolt. The arm 113 has a raised portion 115, and the arm 114, which is somewhat wider than the arm 113, is provided with a recess 116, so located as to receive the oiset arm 100, by the regular movements of which the bolt may be operated.
A keeper 117, having a box-like form, is secured upon the jamb of the door by screws extending through the ilange 118 of the keeper. The keeper is open on the side next the lock, except for inturned flanges 119 at its ends. These ilanges, when the door is closed, are located adjacent the flanges 93 of the lock casing.
The bolts 109 and 110 are of the same shape and construction but are reversed in position. These bolts have heads which are normally held in contact with the head of the center bolt 108 by means of compression springs 120, set into openings in the outer edges of the side bolts, these springs abutting the inner walls 104 of the movable casing 101.
The side bolts 109 and 110 have recesses 121 in their outer edges, so disposed as to clear the iianges 93 and 119. The heads of the side bolts extend like hooks over the recesses 121 and the side bolts can only be released by retracting the center bolt 108 so that its head is withdrawn suciently to extend into the spaces of the side bolts, beyond the shoulders 122, from Which the heads of the side bolts extend.
The side bolts are provided with stem portions of reduced diameter and extending rearwardly. These stem portions are closely adjacent the inner edge walls 104 of the casing, and terminate in bosses 123, the inner surfaces of which make sliding ycontact with the arms 113 and 114 respectively, of the center bolt.
The bosses 123 are bored to receive sleeves 124. These sleeves extend through openings 125 in the sides of the inner casing. Carried in these sleeves 124 are spherical members 126, pressed outwardly into depressions 127 and 128 formed in spaced relation within the cover plate 91, by means of compression springs 129 held in the sleeves and backed by screws 130.
In order to operate the bolts, the knob 96 is rotated by hand to the extent of a full turn, onehalf of this turn serving to retract the center bolt. This is done by means of the lever 100, extending into the recess 116. The Yother half of the turn of the knob causes ythe lever 99 to extend into the recess 106, thus moving the inner casing 101 and the side bolts 109 and 110, as a unit, rearwardly.
The inner casing and the two side bolts are held in their respective positions into which they are thus moved, this being done by spherical members 126, extending into either the front depression or the rear depressions in the casing cover.
' The lock is provided with means whereby it may be operated by means of a key. The mechanism for this purpose is located upon the opposite side of the door from the parts just mentioned, and consists of a cylinder lock, generally designated by the numeral 135. This cylinder lock is provided with a iianged base 136, adjustably held in position by bolts extending through the plate 13'7 set in the door.
The cylinder lock, which may be of any approved type, is provided with a flat stem 138 extending into the opening 98 of the knob 96 and into the lock casing, through a bushing 139 which is revolubly mounted in the bottom plate 95 of the lock casing.
Rigidly mounted upon the extending end portion of the bushing 139 is a lever having arms 140 and 141, the last mentioned arm being offset inwardly to clear the inner casing recess 107, the first mentioned arm being arranged to extend into the recess 116 of the center bolt, and thus being adapted to operate the lock by the insertion and turning of akey, in substantially the same manner as by rotation of the knob 96.
A anged disk.142, disposed at the outer end of the cylinder 135, is screw-threaded on its outer surface and engages a dial 143. This dial is provided with an opening 144, so positioned as to register with a key passage 145, for a cylinder look key 146 of the usual fiat type.
The dial is normally held in proper adjustment to either cause the opening 144 to register with the key opening 145, or else remain out of registry to prevent the entrance of a key. For the purpose of thus holding the dial I provide a screw 147, having a square head extending into an opening 148 in the dial, the screw being threaded and fitted into the flanged disk 142, and operated by aid of a wrench 149, formed on the stem of the key 146.
Except as above noted, my improved lock is in structure and action like other locks heretofore known.
I do not limit myself to the precise mechanis shown, as variations may be made therein without departing from my invention, the scope of which is commensurate with my claims.
