Patented June 26, 1934 STOP ACTUA'PING MECHANISM FOR BRAIDIN G MACHINE S Frederic W. Plumb, West Reading, Pa., assignor to The Narrow Fabric 00., West Reading, Pa., a corporation of Pennsylvania Application January 20,
2 Claims.
My invention relates to braiding machines and particularly to a simple device for operating stopping mechanism therefor in the event of breakage of an elastic thread or other core guided 5 to the braiding point for incorporation in the braid.
In carrying out the invention I provide a single member pivotally mounted on a travelling thread carrier and having lugs adapted on breakage of the elastic thread to engage a projecting portion of a wire, normally supported by the thread, for tilting the pivoted member on the carrier to position its lugs for operating the actuating element of the stopping mechanism on further travel of the carrier.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section, of a portion of a braiding machine embodying the invention; and
Figure 2 is a side view of a portion of the mechanism shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates one of the various travelling thread carriers with which a braiding machine is provided. Carrier 10 has a base comprising plates 11 and 12 spaced by a member 13 which cooperates with the usual sinuous grooves 14 in the machine bed 15 for guiding the carrier in its braiding movements. A spindle 16 extending from plate 11 is provided with a fixed collar 17 for supporting the braidingthread spool 18.
A standard 20 fixed on bed 15 between the sinuous grooves 14 supports a pulley 21 guiding an elastic thread 22, or other core to be incorporated in the braid, from a suitably located supply spool to the braiding point. A wire 23 having a loop or eye 24 by which it is supported on thread 22 is carried by a slide 29 guided on standard 20. Slide 29 has projections or wings 25 adapted, upon downward movement of the slide on standard 20 in the event that thread 22 breaks, to be positioned for engagement by a projecting lug 26 of a tiltable member 27. Member 27 is pivotally mounted on the spindle 16, or on the base plate 11 adjacent the spindle, of a travelling carrier 10.
On engagement of a lug 26 of the member 27 mounted on the first carrier 10 to reach the point at which a thread 22 has broken with a wing 25, the member 27 is tilted about its pivot on carrier 10 to position the lug 26 for engagement, on further travel of the carrier, with an actuating lever for stop mechanism of any desirable construction, such as is ordinarily provided for stopping braiding machines. The distribution of the mass of member 2'7 relatively to its pivot 28 normally 1932, Serial No. 587,638
holds the member positioned during travel of the carrier 10 so that the lugs 26 project from the side of the spindle to engage a wing 25 when the latter is dropped into the path of the lug in passing standard 20 and also holds the lugs in stop 0 lever operating position when member 27 has been tilted about its pivot.
It will be seen from the foregoing that my improved stop operating device is simple and rugged in construction and reliable in operation inas- 5 much as it comprises one movable part mounted on the travelling carrier for cooperation with both the thread-carrier wire and the actuating lever of the stopping mechanism.
What I claim is:
1. In a braiding machine having a lever operable to actuate stopping mechanism therefor and a travelling braiding carrier provided with a spindle; a member pivotally mounted on said spindle and rotatable about an axis transverse to the longitudinal axis of said spindle and having lugs for operating said lever, said member being normally positioned to render said lugs ineffective to operate said lever; a stationary support; and thread-released means mounted on said support for pivotally moving said member on said spindle to position said lugs for operating said lever to cause stopping of the braiding machine.
2. In a braiding machine having a lever operable to actuate stopping mechanism therefor and a travelling braiding carrier provided with a spindle; a member pivotally mounted on said spindle and rotatable about an axis transverse to the longitudinal axis of said spindle and having lugs for operating said lever, said member being normally positioned to render said lugs ineiiective to operate said lever; a stationary support; and thread-released means mounted on said support for pivotally moving said member on said spindle to position said lugs for operating 95 said lever to cause stopping of the braiding machine; the distribution of the mass of said pivoted member normally tending to hold it in a plane for engagement by said thread-released means and when tilted to retain it in position for operating said lever.
