IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES' FOR PLANING WOOD. l
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,327, dated October 28, 1877; application filed Y' February 1 3, 1877.
To all whom fit may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN BENJAMIN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Endless Planer-Beds, of which the following is va specication:
rlhe nature of the present invention consists in carrying slats or plates for planers, which have their edges formed to overlap each other where they pass over the stationary bed, in combination with the feed-gear of a planingmachine, whereby dust and dirt or shavings are prevented from falling through between the slats or plates of the carrying-bed, and interfering with the working of the mechanism which drives the bed, as will be hereinafter fully described and shown.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a top or plan view of my improvement in 'endless planer beds; Fig. 2, a transverse section thereof on line Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 show the form of the links of the endless chain for at their edges, where they pass over the stationary bed or support D, to prevent shavings and dust from falling through between the slats and cloggingor interfering with theproper working of the gearing below. The slats I are bolted fast to the links, s0 as to move uniformly at each end when the endless chain composed of the links is put in motion. The slats I, after leaving the bed D, separate a little distance, so as to discharge any dust there may be in .their joints. The plates I are to be made of iron, planed in parallelogram forms, and should be so attached to the endless chain as to operate steadily and evenly, and should be strong enough to carry any lumber to be planed. rlhe feed-rollers driving the planerbed are shown at B B.
I am aware that endless planer-beds are old devices when formed of flat sections having square edges. I therefore confine myself to the construction of parts as described and shown.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Ihe slats or plates I, provided with overlapping edges, in combination with the feed-gear B B ofthe planer, as set forth.
