Description
June 12,1934.
M. OSTROWSKI ASH REMOVER Filed Aug. 24, 1932 INVENTOR Patented June 12, I934 PATENT OFFICE ASH REMOVER Michael Ostrowski, Detroit, Mich, assignor to Valentine Galush, Dearborn, Mich.
Application August 24, 1932, Serial No. 630,159
2 Claims.
This invention relates to'scrapers or ash removers, more particularly intended for the removal of ashes from the ash pits of furnaces, although it lends itself to more general usage, such 5 as the removal or manipulation of any more or less finely divided material which ordinarily is liable to rise in the form of dust and being manipulated, the object of the invention being to provide a device which may be so operated as to not only spray the material with the dust-preventing agent, such as Water, during or prior to manipulation, but to enable the water to substantially penetrate the mass of material, as distinguished from merely flowing over the surface thereof, so that the dust-preventing function of the device is to be rendered highly efficient.
The invention further contemplates the provision of a rake, hoe or scraper with a hollow body through which water may be passed and ejected from one side thereof as spray, the said body having means substantially confining the spray to the area of material immediately proximate to the body and being worked on, and further means adapted to penetrate and break up the surface of such material to admit the spray to the interior of the mass thereof.
A further object is to provide a scraper or a rake with a hollow body having spray openings in one face thereof and a plurality of tines projecting outwardly of the said face together with an enclosing rim or wall about said face adapted to localize the spray from said openings.
Still further objects and advantages subsidiary or incidental to the aforesaid objects, or resulting from the construction or operation of the invention as it may be carried into effect, will become apparent as the said invention is hereinafter further disclosed.
In carrying the said invention into effect, I may provide a hollow body or box having a water connection leading thereinto to which a tubular handle is connected the said body being provided with a suitable hoe or scraper on one side thereof, the opposite side or face being perforated with spray openings and bounded by an enclosing rim from which extend a plurality of tines.
All of which is more particularly described and ascertained hereinafter, by way of example, having reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the said invention; and
Figure 2 is a detail cross-sectional view of the same.
Similar characters of reference indicate similar parts in both figures of the drawing.
1 indicates a scraper or similar tool attached to or formed on a hollow body 2, the upper face 3 of which is perforated as at 4 to provide spray I orifices, 5 being a connection opening into the said hollow body 2 and adapted to have attached thereto a tubular handle fi through which water may be passed and spray thereby ejected through the said orifices 4.
The scraper 1 is secondary to the invention as it will be obvious that a tool of any shape or form may be used in conjunction with the apparatus about to be described according to the nature of the material of the handle and the method of 7 manipulation desired, but primarily the device is intended for use in the removal of ashes, such as from the ash pit of a furnace, and the form of scraper illustrated is very desirable for this purpose. 7 The purpose of the orifices 4 is to permit the moistening or drenching as may be desired of the material to be handled prior to its removal or extensive disturbance so that the tendency of dust or particles of the material to be dissipated in so the surrounding air will be prevented and a cleaner handling of the material thus permitted, and to facilitate the entry of the water into the mass of such material instead of its mere flowing over the surface of the material, I provide the spraying face of the device with tines or projections '7 adapted to break up the surface of the material as will be readily understood when the said tines are drawn or agitated over such surface. Also to prevent the force of the spray it- 7 self raising dust when being applied, or to prevent the spray being deflected unto the operator or about any undesirable area, I have shown the face 3 of the device as being circumscribed by an enclosing rim or wall 8 with which the said tines 7 may be integral.
It will be obvious that the general shape of the device may be varied to suit conditions of use and favorable manufacturing requirements as may also the number of tines or projections and 0 their placement. It will be further obvious that although in the illustrated arrangement the water is introduced through the handle, such water may be introduced to the body of the device through any other suitable connection provided. 1 5
This invention may be developed within the scope of the following claims without departing from the essential features of the said invention,
and that it is desired that the specification and drawing be read as being merely illustrative, and
the prior art.
What I claim is:
1,962,521 not in a limiting sense, except as necessitated by 1. A raking tool having a hollow head perfo- 5 rated on one of its sides, a water supply connection to said head, and a guard perforated side of said head t therefrom when said tool is in us wall around the o localize spray e.
2. A raking tool having a hollow head perfo-' rated on one of its sides, a water supply connection to said head, a guard wall around the perforated side of said head to localize spray therefrom when said tool is in use, and a series of tines extending from said wall and increasing the general depth of said guard wall.
MICHAEL OSTROWSKI.
