Description

PAPER CONTAINER Filed Dec. 50. 1932 Patented June 5, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE I 2 Claims.
own prior application Serial No. 632,598 dated lilth September 1932, and comprising in each case a conical double-walled body in one end of which a closure is secured. After filling a closure is to be applied to the other end,'and special means are described in both of the said prior applications for subsequently opening the container, the special feature of such means consisting in the formation of two weakening lines around that part of the blank which forms the .end of the body at which the container is to be opened, so that the strip between such weakening lines can be torn out and so enable the end of the body and the end closure'secured therein to be removed to expose the contents for use.
The present invention consists in a combination of the special features described in the two :prior applications above referred to, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 shows the upper end of the improved container; Fig. 2 is a similar view but shows the'commencement of the opening operation, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank for the body. In carrying out the present invention the blank 1 which is to be rolled up to form the conical body 2 of the finished container has, as described in the prior application of Elmer Zebley Taylor Serial No. 570,427, two weakening lines 3, 4, 01' which the line 3 is approximately parallel with the outer edge or the blank 1 throughout its length, while the line 4 is preferably as shown parallel therewith around that part of the blank which forms the inner wall of the rolled-up body and then widens out and continues in a spiral direction around the part of the blank forming the outer wall. A tab 5 is formed at the outer end of the blank 1 between the points where the weakening lines 3, 4, terminate, so that by grasping same the strip 6 between such weakening lines can be completely torn out when it is desired to open the container.
It will be seen that when arranged as above .described it will be necessary to make two complete turns around the container in removing the strip 6, and in order to overcome the necessity for this and enable the complete strip to be ately beneath the tab 5, and to arrange that the whole of the part of such strip in the side A oil the blank forming the inner wall shall be firmly secured to the part thereof in the side B forming the outer wall.
The result of this arrangement is that when the tab 5 is grasped and pulled to commence the opening of the container, the adhesion between the outer and inner parts of the strip 6 will owing to the presence of the out 7 permit both of such parts to be torn out together, so that the m n, g of the container will be effected by a. single turn around same.
If desired only that part 8 of the strip 6 immediately adjacent to the cut 7 may be secured by the adhesive employed to the outer part of the strip under the tab 5, and the adhesion resulting from the treatment with the wax or other material employed to render the container sterile and waterproof, and the strength of the paper of which the container is made, be relied upon to ensure that the complete strip shall be removed in the same way by a single turn around the container.
This tearing out of the strip 6 will, as will be readily understood, separate the upper end of the body 2 so that it and the end closure 9 secured therein can be removed and access to the contents obtained.
In the accompanying drawing the invention is shown as applied to a container which is to be opened at its smaller end, but it is obvious that should it be desired to open same at the larger end the weakening lines 3, t, tab 5 and cut- 7 may be suitably disposed to enable this to be done.
What I claim and desire to secure by patent is:
l. A paper container comprising. a conical double-walled body and suitable end closures, formed from a body blank having a weakening line around same parallel to the edge of the blank throughout its length and a second weakening line parallel to the first mentioned line in the portion of the blank to form the inner wall of the container and widening out and continuing in a spiral direction around the partto form the outer wall, such weakening lines enabling a strip to be torn out when it is desired to open the container, such blank having a tab at its outer end between the weakening lines and a out also between such weakening lines but at a point immediately below the tab when the body is rolled up, the part of the strip in the inner wall being firmly secured by adhesive to the part of the strip in the outer wall, as set forth;
2. A paper container comprising a conical double-walled body and suitable end closures, formed from a body blank having a weakening line around same parallel to the edge of the blank throughout its length and a second weakening line parallel to the first mentioned line in the portion of the blank to form the inner wall of the container and widening out and continuing in a spiral direction around the part to form the outer wall, such weakening lines enabling a strip to be torn out when it is desired to open the con-
