DEXTER S. BAILEY,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF DOVER, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELEVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,107, dated October 16, 1877; application filed May 16, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEXTER S. BAILEY, of Dover, in the county of Piscataquis and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Elevators for Raising Rocks, Stumps, and other Heavy Bodies, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to improve the elevator patented by Dexter S. Bailey, of Dover, Maine, numbered 164,359, dated June 15, 1875, in placing the gears O and D directly over and above the gear B and within the yoke H, thereby dispensing with the braces which are used to hold the hold the gears Q and D in place.
Figure l is a front View, and Fig. 2 is a side View, of the elevator. Fig. 3 is a separate View of the parts which I claim as my improvement.
My invention consists in the casting L and the brake N.
The casting L is so formed as to be fastened to the yoke H, and is provided with a stud or pin, M, for the grooved wheel F to revolve upon. For the purpose of making the operation of the elevator more complete when lowering a load, the brake N is attached, and consists in a wire, one end of which is fastened to the yoke H, and winding once around the hub on the grooved wheel F, and downward far enough to enable the operator to take hold of the end and draw it forward, causing sufficient friction to control the speed of the elevator when a load is to be lowered.
I claim as my invention- The casting L and the brake N, substantially as described, and for the purpose herein specified.
DEXTER S. BAILEY.
