' 4 [rm/mm Patented May 22, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT ol-"rlcs FORCE FEED GREASE SEAL FOR STORAGE BATTERIES Application February 12, 1931, Serial No. 515,357
5 Claims.
My improved device consists of a force feed grease seal for storage batteries or means for filling the spaces between the terminal post and the cover of a storagebattery cell with grease or similar acid resistant and semi-fluid substance to prevent the escape of acid from the cell by capillary creepage.
For a further description-of my invention reference may be had to the annexed drawing and specification at the end whereof my invention will be specifically pointed out and claimed.
In the drawing,
The single figure is a vertical elevation of my device with parts broken away.
In the embodiment of my invention, chosen for illustration in the drawing, there is disclosed a cell cover 1 for a storage battery cell. Cell cover 1 has boss 2 depending from its lower surface and boss 3 having groove 4 therein projecting from its upper surface.
Through an orifice in cell cover 1 projects a terminal post 5 having in its central portion a hollow chamber generally indicated as 6. Terminal post 5 also has a projecting flange 8 having a shoulder 9 thereon. Flange 8 and shoulder 9 cooperate with boss 2 on cover 1. From hollow chamber 6 there extend to the outer walls of terminal post 5 horizontal passages '7 which are located to open into the annular spaces 16 and 17 between the outer walls of the post and the opening in the cover. In the walls of chamber 6 post 5 may, if desired, be provided with an insert 10 or brass or othersuitable material; The walls of chamber 6 or of insert 10, if such an insert is used, are provided with screw threads.
Cooperating with the screw threads in .the Walls of chamber 6 is terminal screw or bolt 11 which is adapted when adjusted to inner position to occupy substantially all of chamber 6.
On its outer surface terminal post 5 is provided with screw threads 12' with which cooperate post nut 13. Post nut 13 carries on its lower surface flange 1-4 which is of substantially the same diameter or shape as groove 4. Post nut 13 may have on its lower surface grooves or channels 18 down post nut 13 on post 5. Chamber 6 is filled with grease or other acid resistant and semi-fluid substance. Terminal 15 is slipped on terminal screw 11 which is entered on the threads in the wall of chamber 6. Terminal screw 11 is then adjusted to clamp terminal 15 against terminal post 5. At the same time inward movement of terminal screw 11 forces the grease out of chamber 6 through the passages 7 and down into space 17 between flange 8 and boss 2 and up into space 16 and also into the spaces between terminal nut 13 and the threads 12. It will thus be seen that the spaces between terminal post 5 and cell cover 1 are completely filled with a semifluid substance and thus the escape of acid from the cell by capillary creepage is prevented.
I do not intend to be limited in the practice of my invention save as the scope'of the prior art and of the attached claims may require.
I claim:
1. A storage battery terminal post structure including a cell cover having an opening therein, a terminal post projecting through said opening and having a chamber therein and having thereinv a permanently open passage from said chamber to the outer wall of said post at the level of said cover, an acid resistant, semi-fluid substance in said chamber, a post nut having engagement with said terminal post to clamp said cell cover against said post, and a terminal screw having engagement with the walls of said chamber to clamp a terminal to said post and to force out said substance from said chamber through said passage into the space between said terminal post and said cell cover and said post nut.
2. A storage battery terminal post structure including a cell cover having an opening therein, a terminal post prcjecting through said opening and having an imperiorate upper wall defining a screw threaded chamber therein and having therein a lateral passage extending from the lower part of said chamber to the outer wall of said post at the level of said cover, an acid resistant, semi-fluid substance in ,said chamber, a post nu-t having engagement with said terminal post to clamp said cell cover against said post and a terminal screw having engagement with the screw threads of said chamber to clamp a terminal to said post and to force out said substance from said chamber through said passage into the space between said terminal post, said cell cover, and said post nut.
3. A storage battery terminal post structure including a cell cover having an opening therein, a boss on said cell cover surrounding said opening and having a groove in its upper surface, a terminal post projecting through said opening and having at its upper end an imperforate wall defining a screw threaded chamber within said post and having therein a laterally extending passage leading from the lower part of said chamber to the outer wall of said post at the level of said cover, an acid resistant, semi-fluid substance in said chamber, a post nut having engagement with said terminal post to clamp said cell cover against said post and having a flange thereon cooperating with said groove in said boss, and a terminal screw having engagement with the screw threads of said chamber to clamp a terminal to said post and to force out said substance from said chamber through said passage into the space between said terminal post, said cell cover and said post nut.
4;. A storage battery terminal post structure including a cell cover having an opening therein, a terminal post projecting through said opening and having at its upper end an imperforate wall defining a chamber in said post and having therein a lateral passage extending from the lower part of said chamber to the outer wall of said post at the level of said cover, a flange on the outer surface of said post beneath said passage, an acid resistant, semi-fluid substance in said chamber, a. post nut having engagement with said terminal post to clamp said cell cover against said flange on said post, and a terminal screw having engagement with the walls of said chamber to clamp a terminal to said post and to force out said substance from said chamber through said passage into the space between said terminal post, said cell cover, and said post nut. 1
