Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
OLIVER WOODWORTH, JR., AND JNO. D. PAGE, OF EAST HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
MACHINE FOR PICKING FIBROU'S MATERIALS.
VSpecification of Letters Patent No. 19,600, dated March 9; 1858'.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, OLIVER WooDWoErH, Jr., and J oHN D. PAGE, of East Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Picker for Cleaning Any and All Kinds of Fibrous Matter; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in so constructing and using two or more conical cylinders with teeth, as to receive the stock at the small end and causing it to pass to the large end by the increased centrifugal force, thereby freeing it from dust or any foreign matter.
The accompanying drawings in perspective represent the machine partially opened, in which- A, A, represents the conical cylinders; B, B, B, the casing inclosing the same; C, the aperture for feeding the stock; D, the aperture at which it is discharged; E, E, the pulleys for driving the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its Construction.
"We construct two conical cylinders of wood or metal with suitable journals and boxes, upon a strong metal or wood frame, of or near the following dimensions, length seven feetdiameter at small end 18 inches, at large end 24 inches, side by side, with their approximate surfaces parallel, at a distance of 3 to 4 inches. In these cylinders we insert a suliicient number of strong iron teeth in a spiral form, projecting 3 inches from the surface, and varying from coarse to fine from the small to the larger end. These we inclose with a strong metal or imanner as to allow the teeth in the cylinders to pass between them, thereby picking and reducing the stock, and separating it fromV dirt or foreign matter. Underneath the cylinders and at a suitable distance we secure screens of perforated metal, or rods, which allow the dirt and foreign matter to escape, butretain the fibrous matter.
Then complete and ready for operation we feed the stock upon an apron or otherwise at thel small end, and it is carried by the increasing centrifugal force to the large end, where it is discharged, entirely free fromdirt and foreign substances.
IVe do not claimy as our invention any new principle of picking stock, o-r any arrangement of the teeth for picking it, or any kind of screens used for letting out the dirt, or any arrangement for driving the cylinder, or any place of feeding or discharging the stock to or from the machine.
lVhat we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of two or more conical cylinders, having -teeth placed spirally around them at proper intervals and within a suitable case, having teeth arranged in such manner as to allow the teeth in the cylinders to pass between them, for the purpose described and in the manner substantially as set forth.
We wish it understood that we do not conline ourselves to the precise dimensions given above, but vary according to the kind of stock used and quantity required.
OLIVER WOODIVORTH, JUN. JOHN D. PAGE. Witnesses: W. II. RILEY, NORMAN FOX.
