7 Claims.
'The present invention relates to metallic door or closure constructions, and more particularly to an edging strip or member for the edges of the door or closure.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a metallic door or closure construction with a novel construction of edging strip adapted to interlock with sections of the door frame and provide a rigid, nre-proof construction.
A further object is the provisionof a novel member adapted to form the edging strip of a door or closure, and which is so formed as to provide interlocking engagement with parts of the closure construction.
A still further object is to provide a novel metallic door or closure construction, the invention contemplating forming the door of two sheets of metal which are connected by a channel member, and then driving onto the channel member and door sections, an edging strip which holds the sides together and forms the edge of the door or closure.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel means and method of constructing and assembling a metal door or other closure.
Further objects are to provide a construction of maximum simplicity, efficiency, economy and ease of assembly and operation, and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear, and are inherently possessed thereby.
The invention further resides in the combination, construction, and arrangements of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and while there is shown therein a preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modication and change, and comprehends other details and constructions, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Fig. 3 is a further enlarged View in Vertical cross section of the means and method of connecting the edging strip to the door or closure construction.
Referring more particularly to the disclosure in the drawing, the door or closure construction comprises Vertical channel members or stiles 1 and 2, a top rail or channel member 3, a bottom rail or channel member 4, and an intermediate cross member or rail 5. As disclosed, the
' door construction is made in two sections or (Cl. 18S-46) sheets of metal 6 and 7, these sections or sheets beingiormed `with the side railsor stiles, top and bottom rails, and the cross member.
Mounted adjacent the edges of the door sections and connected to the same are provided channel members 3 formed with outwardly projecting flanges 9 and 10. These anges are also disclosed as projecting inwardly when the door is assembled, to provide pockets 11 and 12 intermediate the outer edges of the door sections 6 and 7, and the anges 9 and 10 of the channel member, the purpose of which will be later more fully explained. The channel member 8 and the sections 6 and 'l are connected by any suitable means such as rivets or the like 13.
Adapted to close the open sides of the closure construction and of the channel members 8, the invention comprehends an edging strip or closing member 14. This closing member is provided with rigid projecting anges 15 and 16 which are so formed as to be outwardly extending and adapted to interlock with the interior or inner face or surface of the flanges 9 and 10. Intermediate these projections or flanges 15 and 16, and the outer edges of the strip 14, are provided wedge shaped ribs 17 and 18 adapted to spread the flanges 9 and 10 to form and seat within the spaces or openings 11 and 12 and between the sections 6 and 7 of the closure and the flanges 9 and 10 of the channel member.
These ribs wedge between the sides of the door and the flanges 9 and l0 and direct these flanges into interlocking engagement with the projections or flanges l5 and 16 of the edging strip as this strip is driven down upon the spaced sides of the door. These ribs also prevent collapse of the upper and outer edges of the door section. Thus when the backing strip 14 is driven onto the door sections and the channel member 3, a rigid and fire proof door construction results.
In order to provide additional retaining means, brads or other retaining means 19 passing through the door section, channel member and flanges 15 and 16 on the edging strip may be provided. After the door or closure construction vhas been assembled, the edging strip 14 which may extend around all four sides of the door or closure is locked in position and is then welded at its four corners.
Having thus disclosed the invention, I claim:
l. In a metal door construction provided with spaced sides, a channel member bridging the opposite sides and provided with iianges spaced inwardly of said sides, and a strip forming a closure for the edge of said door and member and provided with spaced projections each frictionally engaging the inner face of one of said flanges.
2. In a metal door construction provided with spaced sides, a member bridging the opposite sides and provided with anges having an edge spaced. inwardly of said sides, and a strip forming a closure for the edges of said door and member and providedwth spaced projections, each projection frictionally engaging the inner face of one of said anges and said strip being retained by reason of such engagement.
3. In a metal door construction provided with spaced sides, a member bridging the opposite sides and provided with flanges spaced inwardly of said sides, and a strip forming a closure for the edges of said door and member, said strip being provided with spaced projections and ribs, each projection frictionally engaging the inner face of one of said flanges and each rib being wedged between an outer face of one of said flanges and the inner face of the adjacent side of the door.
4. In a metal closure construction provided with spaced sides, a channel member mounted intermediate said sides and opening outwardly, and an edging strip adapted to form an outer closed edge for said closure and member, said strip being provided with spaced flanges, each adapted to frictionally engage the inner face of a side of said channel member and be retained by reason of such frictional engagement.
5. In a metal closure construction provided with spaced sides, a channel member within said closure and connected to the opposite sides, said channel member opening outwardly and having its sides spaced inwardly from the sides of the closure, and an edging strip forming the exterior edge of said closure and provided with projections each adapted to interlock with a side of said channel member.
6. In a metal closure construction provided `with spaced sides, a channel member within said closure and connected to the opposite sides, said channel member opening outwardly and having its sides spaced inwardly from the sides of the closure, and an edging strip forming the exterior edge of said closure and provided with projections each adapted to interlock with a side of said channel member, and wedge-shaped ribs each adapted to seat intermediate a side of said closure and the adjacent side of said channel member and maintain said sides in spaced relation.
7. In a closure construction, a closure formed of spaced sheets of metal open at their outer edges, a channel member opening outwardly and connecting said sheets of metal, and a strip adapted to close said edges, said strip being provided with inwardly spaced projections for interlocking engagement with the interior of the closure and the sides of the channel member.
