The present invention relates to a machine for forming lamp shades for use in connection, preferably with electric lights or bulbs; with oil lamps, and in connection with other sources of light for '5 fanciful illumination or for reflecting colored light rays, and by diffusion or by reflection either I for reading purposes or for'decorative effects.
An object of the invention is to provide a machine for forming lamp shades of the types above 10 set forth, by semi-automatically assembling preformed stock elements of appropriate character for collectively producing complete lamp shades economically, at a comparatively high productive rate and in two major operations.
Another object of the invention resides in providing adjustable means for accommodating lampshades of various sizes or dimensions and means adjustably mounted for folding an adhesive binder, or tape and for guiding the same i to operative positionin proper assembly with component parts of a lamp shade for binding said parts into coactive relation.

The binding tape 29 is folded as at .81 by the folding tube 42, said shape being retainedby themember 43 while it reaches the tapered portion 43a where it is break-folded as at 29a by the-op :erator, thus infolding the outer wet adhesive side 100 to the inner position 101 (see Fig; 12)

In other words, the operator, will initially draw the tape 29 through the U shaped tubular guide 42, and then through the similarly shaped second guide 43, break-folding it at the inclined termination 43a thereof, then guiding it in break-folded condition along and in the U shaped trough-like open channel 430 of guide 43, right angularly continuing the same. Thereupon the tape is ap plied toinitial portions of the lamp shade parts, that is to the wire frame and the sheet material blank between the rollers 20 and 21; the rollers are then started and the parts and the tape will tween the rollers until the Joint of theshade is finished. New shade parts are then taken and the tape end, cut on finishing the previous shade,
.applied to them without newpreparation of the tape.
Instead of-using water on the -pre-applied adhesive of the tape 29, a liquid adhesive may be placed in the pct 39, and. applied to a dry, nonadhesive ta if desired.
The powe shaft 22, has fixed thereto, a gear 44 adapted or operative coaction with the gear 19 on thecountershaft 18.
The tops of the frame plates 14 and 15 carry cross-bars. 45, which span the slots 16 and are bolted-in place; these cross-bars tapped centrally to receive adjusting screws 46, carrying swiveled follower blocks 47, resting on compressed springs 48, through which, yielding contact is established between the rollers 20 and 21.

It is understood that modifications may be made in the parts and combinations of my device, and I hereby reserve my right to any and all such changes and modifications as are within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims. I
In the operation of my machine, the same is normally at rest and when it is desired to complete a lamp-shade; as described hereinbefore, first pedal 49 is stepped upon soas to separate the rollers in my machine and insert therebetween the tape, the wire ring and the paper blank 31 for the lamp-shade, as best indicated in Fig. 9, whereupon the pedal 49 is released and the said elements of the lamp-shade are caught between the two rollers. Switch 26 in now closed and the machine begins to operate and the lampshade finished as described hereinbefore, whereupon the circuit is broken and the machine will stop, after which the pedal 49 is again stepped upon to separate the operating rollers of my machine, take the finished product from therebetween and put a. new set of three elements of tape, ring and paper blank between them when a new operation may begin.
What I claim as new, is:
1. In a machine of the, class described, a break folding guide, comprising a U shaped tube; means to cause said tape to pass through the opening of said U shaped tube with its adhesive side outwardly and its non-adhesive side riding on the inner wall of said U shaped tube; an inclined termination of said tube; an open U shaped trough-like continuation for said tube to be placed angularly thereto, said trough-like extension being adapted to break-fold said tape at said inclined termination and to cause the same to fold into a U shaped channel formation, its adhesive side being turned inwardly.
2. A machine of the class described, comprising a support; a frame thereon; a power shaft journalled in said frame; a countershaft above said power shaft in parallelism therewith; means to journal said countershaft in said frame in a slidable manner; a gear on each of said shafts; a roller die on each of said shafts; means to yieldingly press said countershaft towards said power shaft and put said gears and roller dies into normally operative contact; a tripper frame rockable in said frame having a portion adapted to rotatably support said countershaft, and means to upwardly move said portion of said tripper frame against said yielding pressure on the countershaft whereby said gears and said roller dies will be disengaged.
3. In-a machine as described in claim 2, apedal on said frame; a link connecting said pedal and said tripper frame whereby a downward pressure on said pedal will rock said tripper frame and cause said support to move upwardly and to disengage said shafts and their associated parts.
4. In a machine as set forth in claim 2, said tripper frame comprising a shaft rockable in said frame; an arm by which the same may be rocked, and two oppositely extending arms carrying said countershaft supporting portions.
5. In a machinerforassembling wire frames and a sheet material body of a lamp shade, or the like, by the use of an adhesive securing tape; two rolling dies; means to cause said dies to tightly engage one another through yielding pressure;
one of said rollers having a groove therein to receive said wire frame and to permit the same to be threaded through between said rollers in said groove; co-operating surfaces on the rollers adjacent to said groove adapted to receive a portion of the sheetbody of the lamp shade and of said tape; means to rotate said rollers in cooperative relation so that the two elements of the lamp shade and said securing tape will continuously pass between them under pressure, said tape encircling said frame and engaging said portion of the sheet body, and means to fold said tape and to place the same between the rollers so as to encircle said frame and engage both sides of said sheet body.
6. In a machine for assembling wire frames and a sheet material body of a lamp shade, or the like, by the use of an adhesive securing tape; two rolling dies; means to cause said dies to tightly engage one another through yielding pressure; one
of said rollers having a groove therein to receive said wire frame and to permit the same to be threaded through between said rollers in said groove; co-operating straight, cylindrical surfaces on the rollers adjacent to said groove adapted to receive a portion of the sheet body of the lamp shade and of said tape; means to rotate said rollers in co-operative relation so that the two elements of the lamp shade and said securing tape will continuously pass between them under pressure, said tape encircling said frame and engaging said portion of the sheet body, said straight, cylindrical portions of the rollers being substantially parallel with the axes of said shafts.
7. In a machine for assembling wire frames and a sheet material body of a lamp shade, or the like, by the use of an adhesive securing tape; two rolling dies; means to cause said dies to tightly engage one another through yielding pressure; one of said rollers having a groove therein to receive said wire frame and to permit the same to be threaded through between said rollers in said groove; co-operating surfaces on the rollers adjacent to said groove adapted to receive a portion of the sheet body, and a folding guide for the tape adapted to fold it into a U shaped channel with its adhesive side inwardly so as to guide the same around said wire frame and the adjacent portion of the sheet body.
8. A machine of the class described, comprising a support; a frame thereon; a power shaft journalled in said frame; a countershaft above said power shaft in parallelism therewith; bear ing means for said countershaft slidable in said frame; a gear on each of said shafts; a roller die on each of said shafts; spring means acting between a part of said frame and said slidable bearings to yieldingly press said countershaft towards said power shaft and put said gears and roller dies into normally operative contact; a tripper frame rockable in said frame having a portion adapted to rotatably support said countershaft, and means to upwardly move said portion of said tripper frame against said yielding pressure on the countershaft whereby said gears and said roller dies will be disengaged.
