Description

y 1934- H. c. CARTER FEED WORM ADJUSTMENT Filed Sept. 22, 1930 //\/Z/E/\/ 717 H. C. CART ER 4 7' TERA/E Patented May 15, 1934 FEED WORM ADJUSTMENT Haskell 0. Carter, Portland, 0reg., assignor to Iron Fireman Manufacturing Company, Port-' land, Oreg.
Application September 22, 1930, Serial No. 483,459
1 Claim.
This invention relates generally to coal burning stokers, and particularly those of the under feed type employing a worm for conveying fuel from the hopper to the retort.
The main object of thisinvention is to provide an adjustment for the feed screw whereby the distance the worm projects into the retort can be varied to suit the requirements as determined by the kind and condition of the fuel used, as well as the rate of feeding and the shape and smoothness of the associated parts.
The second object is to provide this adjustment for the purpose of controlling the distribution of the fuel in order to distribute same to the best advantage above the retort. I
The third object is to so construct the device as to make same simple to manufacture and easily changed to secure a corresponding change in the distribution of the fuel.
These and other objects will become more apparent from the specification following as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through the device.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section showing the adjustment in the most extended position.
Fig. 3 is similar to Fig. 2 but showing the adjustment in its most retracted position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the coupling collar.
Fig. 5 is a. perspective view of the coupling bar.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the driving connection from the transmission case. 7
Similar numbers of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawing, there is shown the tuyres 10 and dead plates 11 of an.
under feed stoker whose retort 1 2 communicates with the fuel feed duct 13, which, in turn, communicates with the base 14 of a fuel hopper 15. The hopper base 14 has formed thereon a cylindrical flanged extension 16 which is bolted to the gear case 17 from which projects the square shank 18.
The feed screw 19 has its forward end 20 projecting into the retort 12 and has provided at its opposite end a flange 21 adapted to journal in the extension 16, and is itself provided with a square recess 22'A adapted to receive the shank 18 or the end of the coupling bar 22 which is provided with a. hole 23 at one end thereof. There is also provided a coupling collar 24 having a-square central opening 25 and a transverse hole 26 adapted to register with the hole 23 of the her 22.
The operation of the device is as follows: If, when operating the stoker, it is found that the highest point of the fuel bed is nearest the hopper 15, as shown in the dotted lines 27, the operator has merely to insert a longer bar 22 (as shown the retort.
While there is illustrated a coupling collar and coupling bar as a means for varying the amount which the feed screw projects into the retort, it can easily be seen that this could be accomplished in a number of different ways without departing from the spirit of the invention.
It can be seen that in order to make the adjustments above described it is only necessary to uncouple the transmission case 17 from the extension 16 thereby completely exposing the members 22 and 24; In the position shown in Fig. 3 the members 22 and 24 are completely dispensed with, the shank 18 extending into the recess 22-A. It will be understood that there is no need for fastening the worm to the bar 22 or to the shank 18, in view of the fact that the rotation of the worm in a coal feeding direction will urge same toward the gear case 17.
I claim:
ing into said recess.
