It should be noted that the ends 30 of the cross rod 14 project a substantial distance beyond the eye members 16, and that the tips of the cross rod are preferably somewhat rounded, as will be evident from an inspection of Fig. 3 of the drawing. Except for this modification the eye set here illustrated probably need not be described over-much in detail, this general type of eye set being disclosed in my Patent 1,865,475 issued July 5, 1932. It will be understood, however, from the description which follows that any form of eye set, particularly one involving projecting terminals or ends such as the ends 30 heretofore referred to, may be used with the mounting means next to be described.
The mounting means of the present invention may be formed from a single piece of preferably moderately resilient sheet metal and comprises a bowed sheet metal member 32 the end portions 34 of which are provided with holding means for receiving the eye set, while the intermediate portion of the bowed member 32 is provided with securing means 36 for securing the same to the dolls head. As here illustrated the bowed member 32 is preferably bent or bowed downwardly, the arcuate shape being such as to provide ample room therebeneath for the eye set without interfering with the desired oscillatory movement of the same. The ends 34 of the bowed member 32 are reversely bent upon themselves to form spaced walls 38 and 40. With this construction the holding means for the cross rod may consist simply of apertures cut entirely through the inner walls 38, while the outer walls 40 may be used as end stops to axially locate and to act as thrust bearings for the ends 30 of the cross rod. It should be understood that the bowed member 32 may be so shaped that the ends 34 normally come closer together than is indicated in the drawing. The sheet metal from which the support is made is, however, at least moderately resilient, and the ends of the bowed member are spread apart when the eye set is forced into place. The spacing is then determined by the length of the cross rod 14 of the eye set in its relation to the stop members '40. At the same time the mounting of the eye set in the support member is an exceedingly-secure one because the ends of the cross rod are permitted to project well through the holes on the inner walls 38. In effect, then, the simple expedient of reversely bending the ends of the bowed member produces all of the advantages of using a relatively heavy solid end provided with deep-seated blind holes, but the cost of the present structure is, of course. a minimum, it involving simply the use of a single piece of bent sheet metal.
Another advantage of reversely bending the ends of the eye set support resides in the fact that a rounded edge is thereby presented which facilitates the operation of pushing or forcing the eye set into place. The ends may be reversely bent upwardly, in which case the rounded edge will lie at the tips or lowermost edges of the arcuate member, and in such case the eye set is preferably forced into place by moving the same upwardly between the ends of the arcuate member. In the present case, however, the stops 40 are formed from rearwardly extending lugs which are reversely bent forwardly, thereby forming rounded edges at the rear face of the bowed member. With the present arrangement the eye set is preferably forced into place by moving the same from the rear toward the front of the head. This arrangement possesses the advantage of permitting the eye members to be moved directly toward and into engagement with the eye openings &2 in the dolls head.
In order to facilitate insertion of the eye set, particularly when inserted through the neck opening of a completed dolls head, guide tracks or grooves may be formed on the inner wall 38, these tracks or grooves being shown at 44 in Figs. 1 and 3 and being most clearly shown in the detail section of Fig. 4. It will be appreciated that the broadly rounded rear edges of the lower ends 34 of the support combined with the guide grooves 44 very greatly facilitate and simplify proper location and insertion of the eye set.
The intermediate part of the bowed member 32 is provided with securing means 36 consisting in the present case simply of a forwardly and then upwardly extending projection of sheet metal formed integrally with the bowed member 32. The upwardly projecting lug or securing means 36 may, in the case of a metal head such as here considered, be fastened in place by soldering or welding the same directly to the interior wall of the dolls head. Of course, if the head is made of other material the mode of attachment may be appropriately altered. It should be noted that there is a forwardly extending strip of metal 46, best shown in Figs. 1 and 4, located between 1e bowed member 32 and the upwardly bent lug 36. It should further be noted that the depending arms of the bowed member narrow or taper off toward the ends 34 which receive the eye set. Keeping in mind the fact that the entire support member is made of at least a moderately resilient type of metal, it wiil be readily understood that the mounting means will possess yieldability relative to the eye sockets or openings 42. Specifically, the eye members 16 may be held in close engagement with the eye sockets 42, and any excessive pressure therebetween will be relieved by reason of the yieldability of the eye set mounting. Similarly, should a child in the course of play press inwardly on the eye members, the doll will not be permanently injured, for the eye members may yield rearwardly and will be restored after the pressure is released.
It is believed that the mode of constructing and using theseveral features of my invention, and the many advantages thereof will, for the most part, be apparent from the foregoing detailed description thereof. The support means is exceedingly simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture. It is capable of receiving and securely mounting an eye set of an especially simple kind. The engagement between the eye set and mounting is of a resilient type permitting insertion of the eye set subsequent to manufacture of the head. The eyes are resiliently supported in their relation to the eye sockets or eye openings.
The mounting means is secured to the dolls head during manufacture of the head, while the eye set itself may be mounted in place either during manufacture of the head, or through the neck opening after the head has been completely made and finished. Such subsequent insertion is facilitated by the provision of special guide means for the eye set. The eye set is securely mounted in place, the advantages of deep-seated openings being obtained while using only sheet metal parts.

Appropriate means to stop or limit the opening or closing movement of the eyes are provided in an inexpensive manner. The mounting means, while applicable to dolls heads of varying types, is particularly valuable in connection with a sheet metal dolls head and may be secured thereto by a simple soldering or spot welding operation.
It will be apparent that while I have shown and described my invention in preferred form, many changes and modifications may be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention defined in the following claims.
I claim:
1. Support means for a dolls eye set comprising a single relatively resilient bowed sheet metal member the ends of which are spaced apart a distance greater than the spacing between the eye openings of the head in which the support is to be used, said ends being provided with bearings for receiving the ends of the cross rod of an eye set, and a bendable sheet metal support formed integrally with and projecting from the intermediate or middle portion of the bowed sheet metal member for securing the same to a dolls head, said bendable projecting portion causing the location of the bowed member relative to the eye sockets to be yieldably variable, the bowing of the member being made ample to provide clearance for receiving and permitting oscillation of the eye set.
2. A support for a dolls eye set, said support comprising a sheet metal member the ends of which are reversely bent upon themselves to form double walls, the inner walls being apertured to receive the cross rod of an eye set, and the outer walls acting as stop or end thrust bearings for the eye set, and means for securing said sheet metal member to a dolls head.
3. A support for a dolls eye set, said support comprising a bowed moderately resilient sheet metal member the ends of which are provided with apertures for receiving the cross rod of an eye set, the sheet metal at the ends being reversely bent to form stop or end thrust bearings for the eye set, and means at the intermediate portion of said bowed member for securing the same to a dolls head.
4. Support means for a dolls eye set comprising a relatively resilient downwardly bowed sheet metal member the ends of which are provided with apertures for receiving the cross rod of an eye set, and an upwardly bent securing lug at the intermediate or middle portion of the bowed member for securing the same to a dolls head.
5. Support means for a dolls eye set comprising a relatively resilient downwardly bowed sheet metal member the ends of which are reversely bent upon themselves, thereby forming spaced walls, the inner walls being provided with apertures for receiving the cross rod of an eye set, the outer walls acting as thrust bearings to locate the cross rod, and an upwardly bent securing lug at the intermediate or middle portion of the bowed member for securing the same to a dolls head.
6. A support for a dolls eye set comprising a sheet metal member bent into arcuate or bowed shape, the ends of said member being bent reversely, thereby providing the same with a rounded approach edge,-the inner walls of the ends being provided with apertures for receiving the cross rod of an eye set and being further provided with tracks or grooves leading from the rounded approach edges to the apertures, and means for securing the support to the interior of a dolls head, the reversely bent ends forming stop walls located outside of and opposite the apertures in the inner walls.
7. A support or mounting means for a dolls eye set comprising a sheet metal member bent downwardly into arcuate or bowed shape, the rear edges of the ends of said member being provided with lugs which are bent reversely and forwardly, thereby providing the same with a rounded approach edge, the inner walls of the ends being provided with apertures for receiving the cross rod of an eye set, and the outer walls acting as thrust bearings to locate the eye set, the intermediate portion of the bowed member being provided at its forward portion with an upwardly bent member for mounting the same to the interior of a dolls head.
8. In combination, a movable eye set and mounting means therefor, said eye set comprising a cross rod, a pair of eye shells slidably mounted thereon, and a depending gravity weight secured thereto, said mounting means comprising a bowed sheet metal member the ends of which are provided with means receiving the ends of the cross rod of the eye set, and the central portion of which is provided with means for securing the same to the inner wall of a dolls head, said member including additional means to prevent sliding of the cross rod therein.
9. In combination, a movable eye set and mounting means therefor, said eye set comprising a cross rod, a pair of generally hemispherical eye shells freely mounted thereon, intermediate members frictionally engaging the cross rod and causing said eye shells to turn with the cross rod, and a depending gravity weight secured to said cross rod, said mounting means comprising a bowed relatively resilient sheet metal member the ends of which are reversely bent upon themselves to form double walls, the inner walls being provided with apertures receiving the ends of the cross rod of the eye set, and means for securing the mounting means to the inner wall of a dolls head.
10. In combination, a movable eye set andmounting means therefor, said eye set comprising a cross rod, a pair of generally hemispherical eye shells freely mounted thereon, intermediate members frictionally engaging the cross rod and causing said eye shells to turn with the cross rod while permitting self-adjustment of the same, and a depending gravity weight secured to said cross rod, said mounting means comprising a downwardly bowed relatively resilient sheet metal member the ends of which are reversely bent upon themselves to form double walls, the inner walls being provided with apertures receiving the ends of the cross rod of the eye set, and the central portion of said bowed member being provided with an upwardly bent securing piece for securing the mounting means to the inner wall of a dolls head.
11. A sheet metal dolls head arranged to receive a movable eye set, said sheet metal head being provided with mounting means in the form of a single sheet metal member bowed in a generally vertical plane with the intermediate portion thereof secured to the metal dolls head, the depending ends of the bowed member being free from the head and adjustable relatively thereto and provided with bearings for receiving the ends of the cross rod of the eye set, the
bowing of the member being made ample to provide clearancefor receiving and permitting oscillation of the eye set.
12. A sheet metal dolls head arranged to receive a movable eye set, said sheet metal head being provided with mounting means in the form of a bowed relatively resilient sheet metal member the intermediate portion of which is secured to the front wall of the dolls head, the depending ends of the bowed member being reversely bent upon themselves to form double walls the inner of which are provided with holes for receiving the ends of the eye set, and the outer of which act as stop walls located outside of and opposite the holes in the inner walls.
13. A sheet metal dolls head arranged to re ceive a movable eye set, said sheet metal head beingprovided with mounting means in the form of a downwardly bowed relatively resilient sheet metal member the intermediate portion of which is provided with an upwardly bent lug secured to the front wall of the dolls head, the depending ends of the bowed member being reversely bent upon themselves to form double walls the inner of which are provided with holes for receiving the ends of the eye set and the outer of which act as thrust bearings for locating the eye set against axial displacement.
14. In combination, a sheet metal dolls head, an oscillatable eye set, and mounting means therefor, said head being pressed out of sheet of the eye set.
15. In combination, a sheet metal dolls head, an oscillatable eye set, and mounting means therefor, saidhead being pressed out of sheet metal and provided with eye openings, said eye set comprising a cross rod, a pair of eye shells mounted thereon, and a depending gravity weight, said mounting means comprising a bowed relatively resilient sheet metal member the intermediate portion of which is provided with a securing lug secured to the sheet metal head, and the lower ends of which are reversely bent upon themselves to form a double wall, the inner wall being provided with apertures receiving the ends of the cross rod of the eye set, and the outer walls acting as stop walls for the ends of the cross rod.
16. In combination, a sheet metal dolls head, an oscillatable eye set, and mounting means therefor, said head being pressed out of sheet metal and provided with eye openings, said eye set comprising a cross rod, a pair of generally hemispherical eye shells freely mounted thereon, a pair of intermediate members frictionally mounted on said cross rod for causing oscillation of the eye shells, and a depending gravity weight, said mounting means comprising a downwardly bowed relatively resilient sheet metal member the intermediate portion of which is provided with an upwardly bent securing lug secured to the sheet metal head, and the lower ends of which are reversely bent upon themselves to form double walls, the inner wall being provided with apertures receiving the ends of the cross rod of the eye set and the outer walls acting as stop means for axially locating the said cross rod.
17. In combination, a sheet metal dolls head, an oscillatable eye set, and mounting means therefor, said head being pressed out of sheet metal and provided with eye openings, said eye set comprising a cross rod, a pair of eye shells, and a depending gravity weight having an upwardly projected weight arm, said mounting means comprising a single downwardly bowed sheet metal member the intermediate portion of which projects forwardly and is secured to the front wall of the sheet metal head, and the lower ends of which are provided with means receiving the ends of the cross rod of the eye set, the upwardly projected weight arm acting as a stop for limiting the movement of the eyes.
