This invention relates to an improvement on my U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,852,654 dated April 5, 1932 and relates to a novel pressure device for the dispensing of fluids, greases and the like.
This invention particularly relates to an improved method of locking and sealing the device and the description and claims will therefore be limited to these features.
This invention further relates to an improved method of locking and sealing the device which eliminates the necessity of removing any of the parts to open the device, thus simplifying the operation.
This invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and finally claimed.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawing the form thereof that at present is preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part thereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 represents a front elevation of the device embodying my invention, part of it being shown in section, this view shows the device in the closed or locked position.
Fig. 2 represents a plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 represents a front elevation on a larger scale of the lower base flange showing the locking catch in the open or unlocked position.
Fig. 4 represents a fragmentary section taken on th line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 represents a fragmentary section similar to that shown in Fig. 4 but in which a different form of construction is used.
Referring to the drawing, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts and with particular reference to Figs. 1 and 2. l designates the pressure device embodying my invention and comprising a generally cylindrical body or casing 2 having a dome shaped upper part or closure 3, and a bottom annular ring 4 attached to it in any suitable manner. 5 represents an annular groove located in the ring 4. 6 represents the base of the pressure device to which is attached the flange 7. 8 represents an annular ring located in the flange 7. 9 represents an annular groove located in the ring 8. 10 represents an annular split ring disposed to be engaged in either the groove 5 or the groove 9 and which normally remains closed or with the two ends in contact. 11 and 12 represent operating handles attached to the split ring 10, one on each side of the split. 13 and 14 represent slots which are located in the flange '7 and annular ring 8 and through which the handles 11 and 12 pass in a slidable fit. 15 represents a catch journalled around the handle 11 and provided with the slots 16 and 17 disposed to engage the handle 12. 18 represents a check valve for the purpose of introducing air pressure into the device. 19 represents a rubber annular shaped gasket disposed to coact with the ring 8 and the bottom part of cylindrical member 2 which is shown curled around the bottom of ring 4. In Fig. 5 the ring 4 is shown made integral with the casing 2 and the ring 8 made integral with the base 6.
The operation is as follows:
The base carrying the annular ring 8 is already provided with the split ring 10 and its accessories and with the rubber gasket 19. The ring 10 is contracted and the catch 15 is disengaged from the handle 12 by being turned upwardly around the handle 11. The dome shaped member comprising the parts 2, 3 and 4 is now set on top of the ring 10 and a downward pressure exerted which expands the ring 10 allowing the bottom of the dome shaped member to enter the base. When the bottom of the grove 5 passes the bottom of the groove 9 the ring 10 will contract into the groove 5 as shown in Fig. 1, the bottom of the cylindrical member 2 meanwhile having made pressure contact with the rubber gasket 19 and compressed it slightly between itself and the ring 8 thus forming an initial seal between these parts. The catch 15 is next swung downwardly so that the slot 16 engages the handle 12. This looks the device and air pressure may now be introduced into the device which forces the rubber gasket still further into the wedge shaped space between the rings 4 and 8 thereby completing the seal.
To unlock the device, the air pressure is first relieved then the catch 15 is again swung upwardly around the handle 11 after which the handles 11 and 12 are spread apart and the catch 15 allowed to fall down so that the slot 17 engages the handle 12 as seen in Figure 3. Spreading the handles 11 and 12 spreads the split ring 10 to which they are attached and therefore increases its diameter and causes it to come out of the annular slot 5 and into the annular slot 9, which condition is shown in Fig. 4 and Fig. 5. In this position the dome shaped member comprising the parts 2, 3 and 4 may be lifted out of the base without any interference.
I am aware that this invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In a device of the character stated, a base having an upwardly extending annular flange, an annular groove located in said flange, a split ring located in said groove, operating handles attached to said split ring and near the ends thereof, said handles passing through slots in said flange, said slots being disposed to allow expansion or contraction of said split ring, a catch to lock said split ring in either a contracted or expanded position, a casing closed at its top and open at its bottom and having an annular flange located within said base flange, an annular groove located in said casing flange and disposed to receive the inner part of said split ring and a yieldable gasket located between said base flange and said casing flange.
2. A device as described in claim 1 but characterized by a split ring of wedge shaped section substantially as shown.
3. In a device of the character sta ted, a base having an upwardly extending annular'flange, a base ring located in said flange, an annular groove located in said ring, a split ring located in said groove, operating handles attached to said split ring and near the ends thereof, said handles passing through slots in said base ring and said flange, said slots being disposed to allow expansion or contraction of said split ring, a catch to lock said 'split'ring in either a contracted or expanded position, a casing closed at its top and open at its bottom and having a casing ring attached to its lower end and located within said base ring, an annular groove located in said casing ring and disposed to receive the inner part of said split ring and a yieldable gasket located between said base ring and said casing ring.
4. A device as described inclaim 3 but characterized by a split ring of wedge shaped section substantially as shown.
