REEL FOR VENDING MACHINES Filed July so. 1932 INVENTOR 4 ./6.' ATTORN Patented May 1, 1934 Charles American Can Company, New York,
STATES Arar- REEL roa VENDING MACHINES H. Erne, Maywood, N. 3., assignor to N. Y., a
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to reels for carrying advertising or display strips and is particularly adapted for use in vending machines wherein the advertising strip is caused to move with rotation of the reel.
The principal object of the present invention is the provision of a reel composed of simple, easily assembled parts which may be rigidly secured together to form a compact unit as by a simple T welding or other suitable A further important object the provision of a reel of operation.
of the invention is the character described Iwhich is formed of three cooperating elements, each of simple construction, two of these ele- 5' ments providing a support for advertising or display matter and the third f qther two.
Numerous other objects 72, lowing description,
element supporting the of the invention will be I apparent as it is better understood from the folwhich, taken in connection with the accompanylng drawing, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing:
. Figure 1 isa front ing the present invention Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation of a reel embody- View, taken substantially along the line 22 in Fig. 1, the lower part being shown in elevation;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail taken substantially along the line Fig. 4 is a fragmentary the reel and illustrating the insertion of vertising or display strip. The reel, illustrated in ferred embodiment of the two of which are substanring-like shape and form, one the other left-hand. The third prises three members, tially of the same being right-hand,
member or element is 3-3 in Fig. 1; and
perspective view of an adthe drawing as a prepresent invention, compreferably drawn or erably welded on opposit e sides or faces of the 15 disc so that a unit reel results which is unusually rigid and substantial in construction and which is ideally adapted for the In the drawing referred to preferably comprise metal rings having, respectively,
11, 12 and inner flanges tially right angles to the purpose described.
the two matched members a pair of hollow cylindrical walls 13, 14 bent at substancylindrical Wall parts.
Each ring may be stamped out of a single sheet of material or it may be to but however made it is rolled up from a strip formed with a central opening 15 inside of the inner edges of the inner flanges. Each flange is preferably reinforced by segments of a circular bead l6 struck up from the material of the flange, there being illustrated 47 in the drawing four reinforcement segments for N each of the ring members.
The cylindrical walls 11, 12 of the ring meme bers are of the same diameter and their flanges 13, 14 are formed so that one is left-handed and the other right-handed. A central supporting U5 disc 1'? is used to complete the reel unit and an outer marginal flat portion 18 is inserted between and is connected to the flanges 13, 14
of the ring members. This interposed disc holds 3 the ring flanges in spaced alignment.
A satisfactory connection for this purpose is made by spot welding, the parts being joined in welded joints 19 disposed preferably between the ends of the reinforced segments 16 of the ring members. The disc 17 may be stamped out to simulate a wheel as by pressed-out reinforcements or spoke sections 20 and a central reinforced hub 21. To lighten the reel, parts of the disc wall intermediate the spoke sections 20 may be removed forming openings 22.
In its use within a vending or other type of machine, the disc 17 is mounted on a hub or shaft and to permit such a mounting it is formed with a central hole 23 and openings 24 are also cut through the disc wall adjacent the opening 23 for connecting purposes.
The outer edges of the cylindrical walls 11,
12 are bent back in outer annular flanges 25,
26 and into the channel formed between these flanges, an advertising or display strip 27 is placed and held on the reel. Such a strip may have the desired display printing or legend as indicated by the broken lines 28 in Fig. 4 and this printing surface, when the strip is in place, will form the outer peripheral wall of the reel. Two slits 29 are preferably cut across the outer flanges 25, 26 and permit insertion of the strip into its place. After insertion the strip is held securely by the confining edges of the outer flanges.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts, without departing from the spirit and 105 scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
playing a display strip, comprising in combination, a central one piece disc adapted to function as a hub and wheel and a pair of separate outer strip supporting members, each of said members being formed with wall portions at an angle to each other, corresponding wall portions of said members being spot welded to said disc with a marginal portion of said disc intermediate said portions and the remaining wall portions of said members forming a support for a display strip and having means to hold said strip in place.
