Patented Apr. 24, 1934 ATi'LS Original application November 28, 1932, Serial No. 644,706. Divided and this application February 15, 1933, Serial No. 656,882
7 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in hoisting apparatus and is directed more particularly to improvements in apparatus for rotating the mast of hoisting derricks and the like, and
this application is a division of an application,
Serial No. 644,706, filed by me on November 28, 1932.
The principal objects of this invention are di rected to a derrick structure including means for rotating the derrick mast and according to special features of the invention the said means consists in a broad way of actuating mechanism for rotating the mast which is adjustable about the axis of rotation thereof so that an operator may rotate the derrick mast at different locations about the axis of rotation thereof.
Various objects and advantages of the invention will be more fully hereinafter referred to in connection with the accompanying drawing which ilustrates the present preferred form of the invention.
In the drawing: Fig. 1 is a small scale partial elevational view showing a derrick having the novel features of the invention associated therewith.
- end seated on a plate 3 or the like so that it may rotate whereby the boom may be positioned in various radial positions relative to the axis of rotation of the mast. It is to rotate the mast on its axis that the features of this invention are directed and such features will now be described.
A supporting structure having inner and outer members and 12 is provided and is supported by brackets is secured to the plate 3. These supports are slot'ed as at 11 and 13. The mast 2 is provided with a toothed member preferably in the form of a gear 16 which is engaged by an actuating means new to be described.
A gear member 15 is engageable with the gear member 16 and is fixed to the inner end of a shaft 20. A projection 22 at the forward end of the gear and which may be an end of shaft is receivable in the slot 11 of the member 10. A sleeve portion 24 passes through the slot 13 of the support 12 and has a collar 26 disposed at the rear side of the gear 15 and the inner side of the outer support 12. The shaft 20 is rotatable in this sleeve 24.
A washer or collar 28 surrounds the sleeve 24 outside the support 12 and a manually operable clamping member 30 is in threaded engagement with the sleeve 24 which is threaded as shown. Means such as a hand wheel 32 is carried by the outer end of shaft 20 to facilitate rotation thereof.
By turning the member 30 in one direction or the other it is brought into and out of clamping position so that the members 26 and 28 clamp the sleeve to member 12 and thereby hold the actuating mechanism against movement about the axis of rotation of the mast.
With the actuating mechanism clamped to the support the shaft 20 may be rotated by means of the hand wheel 32. As the shaft 20 is rotated the gear on the forward end thereof and in mesh with the gear 16 of the mast causes the mast to be rotated. By moving the mechanism relative to the support members and about the axis of rotation of the mast the operator may assume various positions and the same time rotate'the mast on its axis of rotation.
It will be noted that the inner end of the gear is guided in the inner support 10 so that the shaft 26 is suitably journalled for rotation at all positions. By providing the actuating mechanism so that it is adjustable or so that it may be moved into various positions of adjustment about the mast, it is possible to rotate the mast into various locations for the operation of the boom and in that way the greatest flexibility of operation of the derrick is obtained.
Having described the invention in the form at present preferred what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
