P. E. STAMM ERASING SHIELD Filed May 4, 1933 Patented Apr. 10, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention pertains to improved erasing shields for use in pencil drawing, and for typewriters. It is to aid the operator in erasing marks or letters from the surface of the paper and from 5 blurring words and letters contiguous to or near those it is desired to obliterate and thus injuring the appearance or surface of the sheet. This device shields the letters except those it is desired to erase. It consists primarily of a longitudinal plate having upturned side edges which can be so turned upward and over towards the interior portion of the surface, forming an inner side recess along the side edge and above the surface of the lower plate, and which forms a recess in which a sliding guide B,an upper plate, can be inserted and manipulated; in this manner the device is adjustable and to be placed over different words or marks, and allow the removal of the same without injury to the remainder of the paper surface. It is to permit of a line or word very near to another line or between two closely bordered lines to be erased without erasing or partially erasing the adjacent marks, words or lines.
In this device my invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is an end edge view of a part of my device.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device. The same reference characters denote like parts in each of the several figures of the drawing.
A, denotes a base plate having the upturned edges 2, 2, forming the side guards in which and between it the guard plate or shield plate can be moved back and forth to any desired distance. Slidably mounted on the shield plate A and between the side guards 2, 2 I have an auxiliary plate B, having therein the erasure slots 3, 4., 5 and 6, which may be of any desired lengths or proportion to plate B, and through which the lines or words from the drawing may be erased from a drawing surface over which the shield is placed, the plate B moved outward with its slots and placed over the word or part of the word or line on the paper to be erased and while the base plate A may be held at any given point on the paper with the end, the plate B can be moved outward until its slots are exactly over the letter, work or mark to be erased, the base plate A rests flatly on the drawing sheet of paper.
The entire device is formed from very thin metal to enable the erasure to extend through to the paper surface of the drawing or sheet. In operation the base plate A is placed on the drawing sheet and the sliding plate B is so moved that its slot or slots are over the letter or word or line it is desired to erase, and thus the line, letter or Word it is desired to erase is exposed through one of the slots and by this holding of the base plate A with one end, the sliding plate B can be moved and adjusted with its slot over the point to be erased, and the eraser applied through the slot opening and the letter, word or line erased without marring the rest of the drawing. The slot opening is applied or adjusted for each special. 0 application.
Having thus described by invention, what I claim as new and for which I desire to secure Letters Patent is as follows:
An adjustable erasure shield comprising two 35 thin plates, one placed over the other, the under plate provided with vertical inward curved side ribs, the upper plate slotted, the under plate nonslotted, and the upper plate of less width having its edges extending under the said ribs of the under plate, the upper plate having longitudinal slots, plurality in number of varied widths.
PAUL ERICH STAMM.
