IMPROVEMENT IN COFFINS.

Specifieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 95,369, dated September 18, 1877; application filed May 4, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAG'OB A. HOGUE, of Gincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have iuvented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wood Ooffins, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to the construction of wooden coffins having bent Sides; and my invention consists in beveling the ends of these bent sides, and, in connection thcrewith, of coffin ends with beveled edges and corner-pieces, having V-shaped rabbets to fit the beveled ends of the sides and beveled edges of the ends, the junction, as a whole, of sides, ends, and corner-pieces being bound together by the mutual support of its parts, so that it requires but little extraneons fastening. and serves to prevent the straightening of the bent sides, all as hereinafter more fully described and claimed. i"

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wood coffin embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the foot end of the coftin.

AA' represent the Sides ofthe coffin, which are formed to the shape shown by the.custon1- ary steaming and wood-bendingprocess. The bottom B is seeured to the sides by any preferred means. O G' are end pieces, and D D' are corner-pieces.

ln the connection ot' these parts heretofore the corner-pieees have been constructed with right-angle rabbets to meet right-angle ends on the sides A A', and this junction, while requiring st-rong extraneous fastening, did not act to prevent the straightening of the bent sides and Opening of joints at corner.

In order, therefore, to remedy these defects, and provide ajnnction which will require but little extraneous fastening, and act to brace up, as it were, the bent sides of the coffin and guard against Opening of corner -joint by springing, I bevel the ends of the side pieces A A' and edges of the end pieces U l', and cut in the corner-pieoes D 1)' V-shaped or under-eut grooves d, to match the beveled ends of the side pieces and edges ot' the end pieces.

The end pieces thus formed act as keystones to an archpand, owing to the interlocking character of the end pieces, the arched end of the cofin is supported in such a way as to prevent disengagement of its parts or the straightening out of the sides, the several parts of the arch mutually supporting each other and the ends of the sides A A'.

The corner-piecesD D' are, as shown,wed geshaped, to give the proper dare to the coffin, and this feature assists in the tightening of the several parts of the arch together.

I claim- In a wood coffin having bent sides A A', the eorner-pieces D D' and ends O U', joined together and to the sides A A' by joints d, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specitied.
