Patented Apr. 3, 1934 PATENT orrice DEVICE FOR WITHDRAWING CLINKERS FROM: COAL FIRES Nester A. Johnson, Minneapolis, Minn.
Application March 20,
1 Claim.
My invention relates to devices for withdrawing clinker from coal fires, and has for its object to provide a simple easily manipulated device which is cheap to build and can be manually operated to reach in to the fire bed of a furnace either when hot or cold to seize and withdraw masses of clinker.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed.
description thereof, and the novel features of the invention are particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, showing the application of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a part sectional plan view of my device. Fig 2 is a part sectional side view of the device. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the parts ungripped. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional detail view.
As shown, the body 10 of the device, which will preferably be formed of a piece of flattened piping, provides a central elongated channel 11 and at one end is split and turned outwardly to provide forked fingers 12 and 13. Within the channel 11 formed in the body 10 is a slide 14 formed at its upper end with a loop handle 15 and at its lower end with a hook member 16 of a roughly semi-circular shape, as clearly shown at 17 in Figs. 2 and 3. The lower part of the cleft between fingers 12 and 13 on the side away from the fingers is somewhat elongated as indicated at 18 and forms a seat for the back of the bar 14, so that when said bar is pulled up against a piece of clinker, as indicated at 19, the back of the bar 14 will be forced into the cleft 18 and will hold the 1933, Serial No. 661,779
same wedged until such time as the baris pulled forward for releasing the piece of clinker grasped, as indicated in Fig. 3.
The advantages of my invention will sufficient- 1y appear in connection with the above detail explanation. It is cheap to manufacture, simple in construction and for use, and can be made to be sold at a low price. In operation one hand grasps the body portion 10 and the other hand is inserted within the loop 15. The hook 16 is projected outwardly and the forked hooks 12, 13 are slid under pieces of clinker which it is desired to remove. The slide 14 is then pulled forward to cause the hook portion 16 to engage the clinker and jam it between said hook portion 16 and the forked hooks 12, 13. This will have the effect of pushing the bar 14 back against the elongated opening 18, which will wedge the parts together while the clinker is being withdrawn from the furnace, and until the same is released by pushing the bar 14 forward.
I claim:
A clinker extractor comprising a flattened tube having an elongated slideway therein, hook members on the front of said tube, a fiat bar mounted for non-rotative sliding movement in said slideway, a hook member on the end of said fiat bar for engagement of a piece of clinker between said hook member and said hook members, and a cleft in said tube at the base of said hook members engageable by an edge of said flat bar and serving to hold the bar in wedged condition when the clinker is gripped between the hook member and the hook members.
