Description

J. F. CLUNE. CURRY-COMES.
No. 195,344, Patented Sept.18, 1877.
N.PETER5, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN F. CLUNE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM A. BUTLER; SAID WILLIAM A. BUTLER ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS L. BUTLER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURRV-COMBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,344, dated September 18, 1877; application filed July 30, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. OLUNE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in the Manufacture of Curry-Combs, of which the following is a specification This invention has more especially for its object cheapness and firmness or stability in the construction of curry-combs; and my invention consists in a novel manner of manufacturing such curry-combs wherein the previously-prepared comb-blades and the ends of the handle-rod are placed in a mold, and the metal forming the back of the curry-comb cast thereon, said back or frame being also formed during the process of casting with longitudinal ribs, in which the upper edges of the comb-blades set, and which support the latter on their opposite sides, whereby the cast metal forming said back will interlock with the blades and rods forming the completed comb, as will be more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a back view of a curry-comb constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of the same on the line a w,- and Fig. 3, a section on the line y y.
In carrying out my invention I first prepare the comb-blades B and the handle rods or braces 0 O, which are then arranged in a properly-prepared mold, after which I cast metal upon the same, so as to form the back or frame A, which metal, interlocking with the combblades and rods or braces, forms the completed curry-comb. The back or frameA may be cast either a closed or open back one, and during the process of casting said back or frame is formed with transversely-arranged ribs or bars I), which are cast around and interlock with the upper ends of the comb-blades.
If desired, the arrangement may be such that, during the process of casting, the combblades and the back or frame, with its transverse ribs or bars, may be interlocked by dovetailed projections c.
The prepared comb-blades are preferably made of steel, and, by the novel manner described of manufacturing the curry-combs. a cheap and substantial connection or union of the comb-blades B, handles rods or braces O O, and frame or back A, is obtained, and the blades are firmly supported on each side by the transverse ribs or bars b. The back or frame is provided with socket-like projections d, which are cast around the ends of the bracerods 0 O, and after the comb is completed, as described, the handle D is attached to the free ends of the said brace-rods.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A curry-comb consisting of the handle D, the handle brace-rods O U, the cast-metal frame A, and the comb-blades B, the said brace-rods and the comb-blades being attached to the comb-frame by casting the latter onto the rods and blades, as set forth.
JOHN F. GLUNE.
