AAAAAAAAAAAA N Filed Sept. 22, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet '2 A TTORNEYJ Patented Apr. 3, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Venable-Brown Company, partnership composed of Bruce W. Brown Cincinnati, Ohio, a Bryant Venable and Application September 22, 1930, Serial No. 483,422
7 Claims.
My invention relates to display cartons of the type having lids which may be extended into position displaying an advertisement, in which means may be provided for setting the carton at an incline so as to reveal the contents of the carton, and in which the carton is formed from a single blank.
It is an object of my invention to provide a carton in which waste of material in cutting the blank is minimized, and in which overlapped portions at the sides of the top provide a slot for receiving the lid and display material when the carton is closed. Another object in the overlapped fiaps forming the top of the carton is the provision of locking tabs which preferably lock in slots onthe outerlying side flaps which are so constructed as to increase the frictional grip of the locking tabs so as to form firm and stiff corners. A still further object is the provision of a lid or display cover with the score lines so arranged thereon that upon opening up, the display will form naturally into a panel extending in the position designated for it.
The above objects and other objects to which reference will be made in the ensuing disclosure, I accomplish by that certain combination and arrangement of parts of which I have shown a preferred modification.
Referring to the drawingsz- Figure l is a plan view of the cut and scored blank forming the carton.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the carton with the lid open prior to filling.
Figure 3 is a detail side elevation showing the construction of the locking tabs.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the closed carton.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the carton in display position.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the carton with the inclining easel supports in the bottom Wall of the carton holding the carton in inclined display position.
Referring first to the blank indicated in Figure 1, the bottom wall of the carton is formed by a rectangular piece A which has articulated thereto by the usual score means, the back wall B, the front wall C, and the end walls D. The end walls have slits 1 preferably of angular shape as illustrated. Articulated to the sides of the back wall B are the side overlapping flaps E and F, and articulated to the sides of the front wall C are the side overlapping flaps G and H.
The front wall C has articulated thereto a cut-out panel I, with extensions J which have articulated thereto the locking flaps K having tongues L which interlock, as will hereinafter be described. The lid for the box is formed with a flap M having the usual cut-out portion N in which an advertising display is formed, which is articulated to the flap M by score lines in the usual manner. The flap O is articulated to the display flap M. The end flaps D have articulated thereto locking tabs P and Q.
The bottom wall of the box has articulated cutout flaps 2, 3, which are articulated along lines extending laterally across the box, and'tongues 4, 5, are also articulated to the bottom A so that when the easel flaps 2, 3, are opened out, the locking tongues 4 and 5 may be bent over so as to frictionally retain the easel supports so that the carton may be held in inclined display position as indicated in Figure 6. V
In setting up the carton, the sides of the back and front walls B and C respectively, are folded up to a position at right angles to the bottom A. The side overlapping flapsG, E, and F, H, are then folded in to a position at right angles both to the bottom wall A and in a different plane to the front and back walls C and B. The end flaps D are then folded up into alignment with the overlapped flaps G, E, and H, F, and the tabs P, Q, are folded over to hold the three-ply ends of the box in position. The top panel I is then folded over towards a position at right angles to the end walls, and shortly before the panel M reaches this position at right angles to the side walls the tips of the tongues L are inserted within the angular slots 1 in the end walls D.
Referring to Figure 3 it will be noted that the tongues have cam-shaped upper edges, as indicated at 6, so that they tend to become knurled and bent over during the completion of the inserting movement within the slots I. This pulls the extensions J down tight against the tabs P and because of the knurling and roughening of the upper edges of the locking tongues, the box does not tend to open up, but is held in frictionally locked rigid and stiff position.
The box is then ready for filling, and after the contents have been inserted, the cover flap composed of theparts M and N, is bent to about a right angle. This bending is facilitated by providing a secondary score line 7, 7, in which the score is so formed that the top panel tends to bend naturally back to an inclined position. From this open position the tab 0 is slipped underneath the slit formed between the extensions J and the tabs Q. The cover panel when completely folded in is held tightly in position by the frictional grip between the under surface of the extensions J and the upper surface of the tabs Q.
When it is desired to dispense the contents, the portion of the cover which is interlocked under the extensions J is withdrawn. The tab 0 which is formed by a score line 8, 8, also applied from the outer surface of the cover, is bent at about a right angle to the flap N, and when the tab 0 is inserted in the space 8 between the back wall B and the end of the tabs Q, the display panel N is held in a position substantially parallel with the top panel of the box in the position illustrated in Figure 6.
In bending up the display lid, the secondary score permits folding in to proper display position entirely naturally because of the arrangement of the score lines, so that an inexperienced person will naturally open out the display without requiring instructions as to the proper manner of doing so.
The combination of the members M, N and O forming the cover for the box, is not of sufficient width to extend clear across the box. This is unnecessary and would be objectionable because if the cover were as long or longer than the dis tance across the box from back to front, when the cover was closed the end of the tab 0 would strike the inner surface of the front panel C and cause a buckling of the cover. The construction illustrated allows for considerable saving in carton material required because of the short cover.
While I have only shown one preferred form of my invention, in which the cover panel need not be long enough to extend clear across the box because of the engagement within the slits between the under surface of the extensions J and the upper surface of the tabs Q, other modifica tions in the size and shape of parts in which a similar principle is involved, I consider within the scope of my invention.
The easel is so arranged that most of the weight of the contents is thrown on the bottom edge of the carton where it is supported across its entire front flat on the counter. The position and size of the easel may be varied according to the size, shape, and contents of the box.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:'
