Description

March 20, 1934. J. w. BARKER SERVICE DRAWER FOR RANGES Filed March 16, 1933 cl-l I.
Patented Mar. 20, 1934 UNITED STATES SERVICE DRAWER FOR RANGES Jesse W. Barker, Geneva, N. Y.
Application March 16,
2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in service drawers for ranges, and more particularly to that type of drawer adapted to be substantially, fully extended from a drawer opening and to be supported in fully extended position.
The general object of the invention is to provide a service drawer of simple and staunch construction and improved arrangement of parts whereby the drawer may be freely moved into and out of the drawer opening and securely supported in all positions.
A further object of the invention is the provision of efiicient means for preventing accidental withdrawal of the drawer from the drawer openmg.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description considered with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the drawer according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the housing mounting the drawer shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a perspective fragmentary view of the housing with the drawer slidably mounted therein;
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view on line 44 of Figure 3 showing the roller of the housing in engagement with a track member of the drawer;
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional View on line 5-5 of Figure 3 showing the relationship of the track members with respect to each other and the stop member for the drawer in upright position to permit withdrawal of the drawer from the housing; and
Figure 6 is an enlarged sectional view similar to Figure 5 with the stop member in locking position.
Referring more particularly to the drawing 1 denotes a housing provided with one or more drawer openings 2, only one of which is shown. A preferably sheet metal drawer 3, comprising end walls 4, side walls 5 and a bottom wall 6, is slidably mounted within opening 2, in a manner presently understood. The top portions of the side walls of the drawer are rolled as indicated at 7 to impart rigidity and eliminate sharp edges. The drawer is of considerably less width than the width of the housing.
Fixed to the inner face of each side wall 8 of housing 1, by any suitable means such as welding, is a. horizontally disposed shelf 9, upon the front end of which a roller bracket 10 is supported,
1933,, Serial No. 661,127
bolts 11 being employed to secure the brackets rigidly in place. Rollers 12 rotatably mounted in the upper ends of brackets 10 are adapted to engage track members suitably secured to the side walls of the drawer. Each track member comprises a plate 13, having its top and bottom edges bent in opposing directions to form guide flanges 14, which engage within the grooved peripheries 15 of rollers 12 and serve to guide and support the drawer.
A second pair of trackmembers substantiall identical with plate 13 carried by drawer 3 are secured at each end to brackets 17 in turn bolted to shelves 9. These second track members comprise plates 16 having their top and bottom edges bent to form flanges 18 adapted to be rotatably engaged by a grooved roller 19 mounted on an arm 20 projecting rearwardly from each side wall of the drawer. The horizontal plane of track members 13 is slightly above the horizontal plane of members 16 so that the lower flanges 14 of the former will travel between the flanges 18 of the latter, thus providing for a very compact arrangement of parts.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the drawer 3 is effectively maintained against tilting or side wise movements by the supporting rollers even when the drawer is in fully extended position.
Complete accidental withdrawal of the drawer 3 from opening 2 is prevented by means of a lug 23, fixed to the rear end of the drawer, extending laterally therefrom and cooperating with a pivoted stop member 24. This stop member consists of a strip of metal pivotally connected at its lower end by a bolt or the like 21 to one of the track members 16, and its upper end bent at right angles to form an inwardly extending portion 22 which normally rests upon the top edge of the adjacent track member 13 and in the path of travel of lug 23. When the stop member is in an upright or vertical position there will be suflicient clearance for the lug 23 to pass beneath the angular portion 22 of the stop member. Consequently in order to remove or replace the drawer it is merely necessary for a person to reach through the drawer opening 2 and move the stop member from its normal inclined position. However the freely tiltable stop member will always drop by gravity to its normal inclined rest or operative position on the top of the track member and into the line of travel of member 23, unless manually prevented from doing so. As the stop member is remote from the door opening a child would experience considerable difliculty in tampering with this member.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a range having a service drawer compartment and a drawer withdrawably mounted in said compartment, a set of substantially U-shaped track members supported by the side walls of the drawer, a second set of substantially U-shaped track members supported by the side walls of said compartment oppositely arranged and in 'laterallyoffset position with respect to said first set of track members, the track members of both of said sets having oppositely bent flanges, a set of grooved guide rollers supported by the side walls of said compartment aligned and cooperating with the oppositely bent flanges of said first set of track members, and a second set of grooved guide rollers supported at the rear end of said drawer and aligned and cooperating with the 0ppositely bent flanges of said second set of track members, said sets of track members being vertically offset with respect to each other to securely support said drawer against vertical and sidewise movements during sliding operations.
2. In a range having a service drawer compartment and a drawer withdrawably mounted in said compartment, a plurality of stepped sets of cooperating substantially U-shaped supporting track members and cooperating grooved rollers mounted on said drawer and the walls of said compartment, the sets of track members being laterally and vertically offset with respect to each other, a stop member for said drawer pivotally attached to one of the track members which are secured to the walls of said compartment, said stop member having a lateral portion extending inwardly above one of the track members secured to said drawer for contact with said lattertrack member and in alignment with said lug when said stop member is in inclined position with respect to its supporting track member, said lateral portion being spaced above said track member, secured to said drawer, and permitting free passage of said lug, when said stop member is held perpendicular to its supporting track member, and said lateral portion being spaced laterally from one side wall-of the drawer and in a plane below the top edge of said side wall.
