This invention has reference to apparatus for effecting the tying of W001 bale and like ties and has been: devised to provide apparatus for engaging: a metallicv band with a shackle member in such a manner that when the tie is in position on a bale or: other package, the said tie will lock andtake the expansive strain of the bale without slippage.
The shackle for use with this apparatus is of 9 that type in. which a metal base has an opening provided by the formation of an integral tongue, the saidshackle forming the means whereby the ends of. a tie band will be-inseparably joined after passing about a bale or package which is under pressure for the purpose.

It is'ana advantage to effect the anchorage of one end of the band to the shackle preparatory to placing theband about the bale and the apparatus to be hereinafter fully described is for that purpose, i. e. ofbending the band at one end about the tongue of the shackle and then returning the said end over the base of the shackle which may be removed with the attached band for disposal around a baleor other package.

According to this invention, the apparatus comprises an outer rectangular casing 5 having one side 6 detachable for the purposes of assembling the various integers therein, the said casing 5 being provided with base plates 7 for mounting the apparatus to any suitable supporting means.
Centrally disposed in the upper surface 8 of the casing 5 is a transverse recess 9 which is fitted at one side with spaced overlapping plates 12, the recess 9 at its longitudinal centre being formed with a right angled slot or recess 13 in front of which the shackle 14 is positioned in the transverse recess 9.
The shackle 14 is slipped into position in the transverse recess 9 with the extremities of its outer side 15 housed under the overlapping edges of the plates 12, the said recess 9 being stepped to provide a ledge 15a on which the shackle 14 seats, the tongue 16 thereof extending downwardly through the reduced portion 17 of the transverse recess 9.
To maintain the shackle 14 in the operative position illustrated in Figures 1 to 3, a spring controlled jaw 18 is adjustably mounted in the upper surface 8 of the casing so that the top 19 of the forward effective end of the jaw 18 engages with the inner side 21 of the shackle 14, the lower portion 22 of the jaw being extended below the shackle and formed at the end thereof with a downwardly inclined bevel 24, the purpose of which will be described.
The jaw 18 operates in a longitudinal slot 25 formed in the upper surface 8 of the casing in alignment with the recess 13 disposed on the other side of thetransverse shackle slot 9, the said jaw 18 being spring controlled as at 26 and operated by means of a short bent link 2'7 formed on theinner end of a transverse spindle 29, the centre of which is shaped with a lug or projection 30 positioned between a stationary vertical buffer 31 and a shoulder 32 on the rear end of the jaw, the spring 26 impinging on the buffer 31 with its other end connected to an integral stop member 32a formed on the jaw 13. g
The stationary buffer 31 is sweated or otherwise attached to a base plate 33 below which the said jaw is disposed and operates the said plate, being slotted as at 34 to permit the movement of the vertical stop member 3211.
The jaw 18 is illustrated in the operative position andwhen it is desired to remove the shackle after the completion of the band tying operation thereon, the link 27 is moved or partially rotated to cause the projection 30 to engage with the end shoulder 32 of the jaw which is thereby forced rearwardly under the influence of the spring 26, the setting of the link 27 maintaining the jaw in the outer released position whereby the shackle and attached band'may be removed from the transverse recess 9.
Disposed and operating within the casing 5 are right and left hand coacting tools 35 and 36 to attach a metal band to the shackle in the manner to be hereinafter described.
The right hand tool 35 is formed with a folding nose portion 37 which terminates in a shoulder 38, the surface of which is enlarged and curved to extend around to the stem 39 of the tool, the rear end of which is pivoted as at 40 to the upper end of a bell crank 41 pivotally mounted within the casing 5.
The nose 37 of the tool 35 is provided at each side with cheek plates 42 which overlap the shoulder surface 38 and. are correspondingly curved therewith, the lower portion of the curved cheek plates 42 being adapted to engage with and ride on a cam track 43 mounted within the casing 5 by means of the bracket 44 which is bolted to the rear wall 47 of the said casing as illustrated inFigure3.
The cheek plates 42 form a guideway for the end of the band to be delivered against the nose 37 of the tool 35 which, in its normal position is slightly rearward andbelow the tongue of the said shackle, with the cheek plates 42 in engage-- ment with the lower portion of the cam track 43 as illustrated in Figures 3 and '4.
The bell crank 41 is pivoted as at 43 to the rear wall 47 of the casing 5, the lower end of the bell the tool to'move forwardly and rise under the in-- fluence of the bell crank 41.
The coacting and finishing tool 36 is pivoted as at 54 to the upper end'of an actuating lever 55 which is pivoted as at 56 to the rear wall 47 of the casing, the lower end of the lever 55 having mounted thereon a roller 58 to engage with a cam 59 mounted on the main spindle 51 of the apparatus adjacent to the former cam 50 which actuates the right hand tool 35 as previously described.
The inner cam 59 is similarly shaped to the outer cam 50, but is oppositely disposed on the spindle 51 whereby on a partial rotation being imparted, the outer cam 50 operates its bell crank and consequently the right hand tool 35 prior to the inner cam 59 imparting movement to the actuating lever 55 and left hand tool 36.
The cam spindle 51 exteriorly of the casing 5 is fitted with a handle 60 for the purpose of operating the cams 50 and 59 and associated mechanism.
The actuating lever 55 is spring loaded as at 55a to ensure the quick return of the said lever and consequently the tool 36 after the completion of the operations thereof, the spring 55a being anchored between the lever 55 and the front wall 55?) of the casing 5 of the apparatus.
The left hand tool 36 is formed at its upper effective end in the manner of a rounded head 61 in which is fashioned a mouth portion 62, the sides of which are inclined towards each other from the front of the said mouth 62, the inclined sides uniting in curved base 63, the mouth 62 and head 61 engaging with and performing the final folding of the metal band on the shackle.
As illustrated in Figures 1 and 3, the head 61 of the left hand tool 36 is disposed inthe longitudinal slot or recess 13 in the upper surface 8 of the casing while the tool on its lower surface is bifurcated as'at 65 to receive a roller 66 in engagement with a cam track 6'7 formed on a bracket 63 bolted to the rear wall of the casing, the said cam track 67 being shaped with definite curve to define the movement of the left hand tool 36, which being independently pivoted to the actuating cam lever 55 is caused, by the roller 66 riding on the cam track 67, to move upwardly and then rearwardly, the reason for which will be described.
Figures 4, 5 and 6 illustrate in detail the respective operations of the right and left hand coacting tools 3.5 and 36 in attaching a metal band to the shackle 14 which is first placed in the central transverse slot 9 in position in front of the head 61 of the left hand tool as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3.
As illustrated in Figure 4, one end of the band a is delivered through the central slot or opening '70 of the shackle 14, the inclination of the shackle tongue 16 being such that the band is directed against the forward surface of the nose 37 of theright hand hool 35 and is then further extended into the chamielled space between the cheek plates 42 of the nose to terminate against the shoulder 33,- the positioniand shape of this tool 35 thereby governs the length of metal band a'to be inserted through the central opening 70 of the shackle 14. V
The spring controlled jaw 13 is then set in the operative position as illustrated to clamp the shackle 14 in position and incidentally the lower portion of the jaw impinges on the metal band a and forces same against the tongue 16 of the shackle whereby both shackle and band are retained in position by the jaw 18 during the operation of the respective tools 35 and 36.
With the inserted end b of the metal band a in engagement with the nose of the tool 35, the handle 60 is partially rotated to operate the outer cam 50 which, as previously described, actuates the said tool 35 which thereby moves forwardly and upwardly along the cam track 43 and carries with it the inserted end I) of the band, the path described by the said tool 35 being under and along the shackle 14 and tongue 16 thereof,
whereby the said end 5 of the band is folded around the end 16a of the shackle tongue and then passed along the underside of the shackle and tongue, the length of the inserted end b of the band being such that a projection portion 0 thereof is extended past the end of the shackle as illustrated in Figure 5 and with the band a partially folded and attached to the shackle 14, the tool has completed its operation and the shape of the cam is such that it then releases the pressure on the bell crank 41, whereby the spring 52 thereof returns same together with the tool 36 to their normal respective positions.
The relationship of the cams is such that a further partial rotation of the handle causes the inner cam 59 to operate the actuating lever 55, the left hand tool 36 then moves upwardly and rearwardly under the guidance of the cam track 67 and it is a particular feature of the invention that the projecting end portion 0 of the metal band a as positioned by the initial tool 35, is disposed in the path of the left hand tool 36, the rounded head 61 of which is brought intocontact with the projecting end c and bends or folds same upwardly against the front of the shackle 14 and then on the continued upward and rearward movement of the tool 36, the mouth 62 thereof engages with or closes on the now upturned end 0 of the band and folds same back over the upper surface of the shackle as illustrated more particularly in Figure 6.
It will be noticed that the lower side 62a of the mouth 62 of this latter tool 36 is slightly longer than its adjacent side, whereby, during the folding action, this lower side 62 impinges on the lower folded portion of the band and presses it against the underside of the shackle 14, while the upper side of the mouth folds the end of the said band back over the top of the said shackle as described and illustrated in Fig- The tool 36 has then completed its operation and the handle may be reversed to set the apparatus at normal, the shackle 14, together with the attached and folded band a being removed by releasing the jaw 18, in readiness for further operation of the apparatus.
Figure 6 illustrates the shackle 14 with the metal band a tied thereon, the coacting tools by the operations previously described folding the inserted end b of the band around and under the tongue of the shackle and then the projecting end 0 is folded back over the top of the shackle, thus providing a very effective lock or tie of the metal band on the shackle, which is inseparable therefrom during use, and tends to tighten rather than slip or free itself from the said band, the said shackle 14 with the end of the band anchored or attached thereon in the mamier described is then ready for transferring to a bale, the free end of the band being passed around the said bale and then inserted through the slot in the shackle to lie against the previously folded end of the band, thereby effecting a very efficient tie for the bale.
Figures 10 to 12 illustrate the means for op erating the retaining jaw 18 simultaneously and automatically with the handle 60 to eliminate the necessity for providing a separate adjustment of the jaw 18 as previously described and illustrated.
To effect the automatic functioning of the jaw 18 with the handle 60, the said jaw 18 is disposed within the casing 5 of the apparatus in its normal position and is slidalbly mounted on a ledge 75, the rear end 76 of the jaw being downturned and bifurcated as at 77 to receive the right-angled end 78 of a bent pivoted lever 79, said lever being pivoted as at 80, its lower end being adapted to engage with a lug 81 formed on a transverse spindle 82.
The spindle 82 extends through the front face of the casing 5 and on its outer extremity is fitted with a bifurcated or forked member 88, the bifurcated portion 84: thereof being adapted to engage at predetermined periods with a pin 85 attached to the inner side of the main handle 60.
The outer ends 86 of the bifurcated member 83 are rounded as illustrated in Figure 12 to permit of the ready entry of the handle pin 85 into the space between the bifurcations 84.
A spring 86 is disposed between the pivoted lever 79 and the rear wall of the casing 5 to assist the handle 66 in its operations.
With the automatic arrangement between the jaw 18 and the handle 60, the shackle and band are positioned in the transverse slot 9 as previously described, while the handle 60 is in the lower position illustrated in Figure l and as the said handle 60 is raised to operate the coacting tools 35 and 36, the pin 85 engages with the tool 83 and actually enters the bifurcated portion 84 which is thereby raised with the handle and imparts a partial rotation to the transverse spindle 82 whereby the lug 81 is brought into engagement with the lower end of the pivoted lever 79 causing same to thrust the jaw 18 forwardly to engage with the shackle as previously described.
The movement of the handle 60 is continued to complete the folding actions of the tools 35 and 36, and it will be obvious on the continued movement of the handle, its pin 85 engages from the bifurcated tool 88 and the lug 81 on the spindle 82 maintains the pivoted lever 79 and consequently the jaw 18 in their respective operative positions.
After the completion of the folding operations of the coacting tools, the handle 60 is returned and in its reverse movement the pin 85 again engages with the bifurcated tool 83 and returns same to its lower normal position and thereby frees the lug 81 of the spindle 82 from the pivoted lever 79 whereby the jaw 18 will slide back to its normal position under the action of the spring 86.
In this manner an independent setting of the jaw 18 is eliminated as same is performed by and during the operation of the handle 60 as described, the said jaw 18 being illustrated in the operative position in Figure 10, the various associated members being also illustrated in relation to the handle 60.
It will be understood that the cam spindle 51, in lieu of being controlled by the handle 60 may be suitably geared to a motor or other prime mover without departing from the ambit of the invention, and I do not wish to be arbitrarily confined to the particular shape and construction of the shackle, illustrated by way of example with the apparatus, but desire it to be understood that various improvements and modifications may be embodied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Apparatus of the class described comprising a casing, means to detachably position a shackle with an inserted metal band in an opening in said casing, coacting band folding tools disposed within said casing and means for moving said tools relatively to said band and to each 15 other in sequence to effect to said shackle. 7
2. Apparatus of the class described comprising a casing, means to detachably position a shackle and an inserted metal band in an opening in said casing, with the end of said band projecting into the casing, coacting tools disposed within said casing, in operative relationship to said shackle and band end, means for moving said tools in predetermined sequence to firstly fold the projecting end of said band around a tongue of said shackle and then fold back the projecting end over onto the upper end of the shackle. V
3. Apparatus of the class described comprising a casing, an opening in said casing to detachably receive a shackle with an inserted metal band end projecting into the casing, coacting tools disposed within said casing, means for moving said tools in'predetermined sequence and means for determining the path of movement by said tools in relation to each other and the inserted end of the metal band and shackle.
'4. In apparatus of the class described, a casing, coacting tools disposed within said casing, means to move said tools in sequence in relation to an inserted end of a metal band extended through a shackle, curved cam tracks mounted in said casing to determine the path of movement of each tool during engagement with the inserted end of the metal band.
5. In apparatus of-the class described, a casing, means to retain a shackle on said casing with a metal band end projecting through said shackle into the casing, coacting tools disposed within said casing, independent fixed cam tracks associated with each tool to determine the path of travel of the tool in relation to the projecting end of said metal band, and cams arranged within said casing in relationship to said tools to independently operate each tool in sequence to engage with the end of the metal band.
5. In apparatus or" the class described, a casing, band folding tools disposed within said casing, fixed cam tracks mounted in said casing to cause said band folding tools to move in a predetermined course in sequence and in relation to an inserted end of a metal band protruding through a shackle detachably mounted on said casing.
7. In apparatus of the class described, a casing, means to detachably position a shackle and metal band on said casing with an end of said band projecting through said shackle into the casing, coacting tools disposed in said casing in operative relationship to said shackle and band end, actuating members pivoted to each cam and to the casing, cams mounted in said casing on a spindle to independently operate each actuating member in sequence and means to effect a partial rotation to the said spindle for the purposes set forth.
8. In apparatus of the class described, a casing, a transverse slot in the upper end of said casing to receive a shackle and the inserted end of a metal band projecting into said casing, an adjustable spring controlled jaw on said casing to retain the shackle and band in position, right and left hand coacting tools disposed within said casing, independent actuating members'pivoted to each tool and the casing, a main spindle extended through the casing, spaced cams mounted on said spindle to operate each actuating member in sequence, means to effect a partial rotation of said main spindle, means to guide each tool in relation to the inserted end of the metal band and means to return said actuating members to the tying of the band their normal respective positions on the completion of an operative and guided movement.
9. In apparatus of the class described, a casing, a main spindle extending through said casing, adjacent cams of similar shape but of opposed disposition mounted on said spindle, a pivoted actuating'member in engagement with each cam, a coacting tool pivoted to each actuating member, a cam track associated with each tool, the curvature of said tracks being adapted to define the movement of said tools in relation to an inserted end of a metal band projecting through a'shackle detachably positioned onthe casing.
10. Apparatus of the class described according to claim 9 in which one of said tools is adapted to fold the inserted end of the metal band around and below a tongue of said shackle and position a projecting portion of said band in the path of the other coacting tool which is adapted to fold the projecting portion of said band upwardly around the upper surface of said shackle.
11. In apparatus of the class described, a casing, coacting tools disposed within said casing, one of which comprises a preliminary folding tool normally positioned below and slightly rearward of a tongue of a shackle detachably positioned on said casing with a metal band inserted through said shackle into the casing, a fixed cam track positioned beneath and in engagement with said tool, a bell crank pivoted to said tool and the casing, a roller mounted on the lower endof said bell crank to engage with a cam carried on a 'main spindle and means to effect a partial rotation of said spindle.
12. In apparatus of the class described, a casing, coacting tools Within said casing, one of which comprises a preliminary band folding tool formed in the shape of a nose which terminates in an enlarged shoulder, curved towards a stem of said tool, cheek plates disposed on each side of said shoulder in curved coincidence therewith a cam positioned within the casing below said tool and an overlap on the cheek plates around the edge of said shoulder to impinge on said cam for the purposes herein specified.
13. In apparatus of the class described, a casing, means to detachably position a shackle on said casing with an inserted metal band projecting into the casing, a preliminary band folding tool within said casing to engage with the inserted metal band and a nose-shaped portion on said tool to determine the length of metal band inserted into the casing.
14. In apparatus of the class described, a casing, coacting tools disposed within said casing, one of said tools being adapted to complete the folding operation of a metal band partially attached to a shackle and its tongue, said tool hav ing a rounded head seating in a recess formed in the upper surface of said casing, in alignment with said shackle, a mouth portion formed in the head of said tool, a roller fitted to the underside of said tool, a cam track mounted in said casing to engage with said roller an actuating member pivoted to said tool and the casing, a roller fitted to the other end of said member, a cam mounted on a main spindle to engage with said roller and means to effect a partial rotation'tosaid spindle.
15. In apparatus of the class described, 2, casing-a main spindle extended through said casing, cams of similar shape but opposite disposition adjacently mounted to said spindle, spring loaded actuating members in engagement with said cams, a coacting tool pivoted to the upper end of each actuating member, a cam track associated with each tool to govern and define the movement thereof, a folding nose and shoulder portion on one tool to impart a preliminary folding operation to an inserted end of a metal band around and below the tongue of a shackle detachably mounted in a recess on said casing, a rounded head portion with a mouth formed therein on the other coacting tool to complete the folding of the inserted end of said band around the top of said shackle, means to retain said shackle in position on the casing during the band folding operation and means to operate said retaining means simultaneously and automatically with means adapted to impart a partial rotation to the main spindle.
16. In apparatus of the class described, a casing, a recess in the upper surface of said casing, means to detachably position and retain a shackle in said recess with a metal band projecting through said shackle into the interior of said casing, coacting band folding tools disposed within said casing, and means for moving said tools relatively to said band and said shackle, and means for operating the shackle retaining means simultaneously and automatically with said operating means.
17. Apparatus of the class described including a casing, a transverse spindle extended through said casing, a control handle fitted on the outer end of the spindle, a pin mounted on said handle, a bifurcated member mounted on the outer extremity of the transverse spindle to engage with said pin during the operation of said handle, a lug formed on said spindle, a pivoted lever located in the casing with the lower end of said lever in engagement with said lug, a spring disposed between said pivoted lever and a rear wall of said casing, a shackle retaining jaw operatively connected to said pivoted lever with said jaw being slidably disposed in said casing in relation to a shackle disposed therein.
18. In apparatus of the class described, a casing, a transverse spindle extended through said casing, a control handle fitted on the outer end of said spindle, a pin fitted on said handle, a bifurcated member mounted on the outer end of the transverse spindle to engage with said pin at predetermined intervals during the operation of said control handle, a lug on said spindle, a pivoted and spring controlled lever located within the casing and actuatable by said lug and a shackle retaining jaw slidably disposed in said casing to move in conjunction with said lever.
19. Apparatus of the class described according to claim 18 in which the jaw is adapted to engage with the shackle during the initial operative movement of the control handle and return to its normal position during the reverse movement of the handle.
20. In apparatus for the purposes indicated, a spring controlled jaw to retain a shackle and inserted metal band in position in relation to coacting folding tools disposed in a casing, the upper portion of the jaw being adapted to impinge on the upper edge of the said shackle, the lower portion of the said jaw being extended below and along the said shackle, a base plate beneath which said jaw is disposed, a bevelled end on the lower portion of said jaw to impinge on the metal band, an integral stop on said jaw, a static-nary buffer mounted on said base plate, a spring disposed beneath the integral stop and said buffer, and means to actuate and retain the jaw in the operative or released position simultaneously with an operating handle.
21. Apparatus of the class described including a casing, a ledge in said casing, a shackle retaining jaw slidably disposed on the ledge, a downturned bifurcated end to said jaw, a pivoted lever mounted in said casing and having an upper right-angled end in engagement with the bifurcated end of said jaw, a transverse spindle extended through the casing, a lug formed on said transverse spindle to engage at predetermined periods with the lower end of said pivoted lever, a control handle fitted to the transverse spindle, and means to impart a partial rotation of said spindle simultaneously with the operation of the control handle.
