Description

March 6, 1934. P DUNCAN, JR 1,949,957
SLIDE CASTER Filed April 25, 1933 jgl.
7 I Z gwuemkoo TRflun carpi.
Patented Mar. 6, 1934 UNITED ST TES PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to a slide caster for furniture, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind especially adapted for use in connection with furniture placed upon hardwood or highly polished floors.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind constructed in a manner whereby the contacting surface of the caster comprises a plurality of fibrous strands which provide a contact with the floor without marring or otherwise injuring the surface and wherein such fibrous covering is treated with wax or a kindred substance to assure a further desirable contact of the caster with the fioor surface.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind comprising a core or base member around which a cord or strand of fibrous material is wound to provide a contacting surface unharmful to the door surface and wherein the wrapping of the fibrous cord'or strand is such to provide a central pocket to compensate for any gritty matter which may be upon the floor surface.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved slide caster whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in top plan of the core or base member as comprised in my improved caster;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through the core or base member as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the core or base member partially wrapped;
Figure 4 is a View similar to Figure 1 showing the core or base member completely wrapped;
Figure 5 is a view in side elevation of the complete device as illustrated in Figure l with an applied protecting cap shown in section;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken through the flange portion of the protecting cap as herein employed;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary view in bottom plan of the caster as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, my
improved caster comprises a basemember B having a circular plate 1 of sheet metal having a centrally arranged tang 2 struck therefrom and arranged at right angles thereto as illustrated in Figure 2. This tang 2 is preferably substantially triangular in form as is clearly indicated by the resultant opening 3 in the plate 1 after the tang 2 has been struck.
The periphery of the plate 1 is provided therearound with a series of outstanding radial fingers v 4 having their extremities angularly disposed, as
at 4, in the same general direction as the tang 2. The portions between the inner ends of the fingers 4 provide notches 5 in which are engaged cords or kindred strands 6 of fibrous material wrapped around the core or base member B. The wrappings around the core or base member 13 are of any desired number and are disposed chordal of .the core or base member B as particularly illustrated in Figure 4 resulting in the outer or working face of the completed caster being provided with a central pocket 7 which readily compensates for grit which may be encountered upon the floor or other surface over which the caster may he slid. In other words, the pocket 7 provides a chamber to receive such grit or the like which might otherwise have a tendency to scratch the floor surface.
As the strands are wrapped around the base or core member B they are received within the notches or recesses 5 and as the wrapping is completed the extremity of each of the cords or strands is engaged. between an angular portion 4' of a finger 4 and the matted strands arranged inwardly of but immediately adjacent to the portions 4 of the fingers and around the peripheral portion of the inner face of the core or base member B.
- The cords or strands 6 are preferably treated with wax or kindred material so that the desired contact of the slide caster upon the floor or a polished surface is rendered more desirable.
As particularly illustrated in Figures 5 and 6 a cap 8, preferably of metal, is provided defined by a resilient fiange 9 which is adapted to be snapped or forced over the working or contacting face of the caster. This cap 8 is of especial advantage in protecting the fibrous lamination when the caster is applied to furniture in storage or placed on a rough surface, such as concrete or the like, and at which time it is of course desired to protect the fibrous lamination.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a slide caster constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a slide caster for furniture comprising a core, and a strand of fibrous material wrapped on the core to provide a fibrous facing for the caster, said fibrous facing being adapted for direct contact with the floor or other surface.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a slide caster for furniture comprising a core, and a strand of fibrous material wrapped on the core to provide a fibrous facing for the caster, said fibrous facing being adapted for direct contact with the fioor or other surface,the periphery of the core having notches therearound which receive the strand of material wrapped therearound.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a slide caster for furniture comprising a core, and a strand of fibrous material wrapped on'the core to provide a fibrous facing for the caster, said fibrous facing being adapted for direct contact with the floor or other surface, said strand being wrapped over the outer face of the core in chordal relation thereto to provide the fibrous facing of the caster with a central pocket.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a slide caster for furniture comprising a core, and a strand of fibrous material wrapped on the core to provide a fibrous facing for the caster, said fibrous facing being adapted for direct contact with the floor or other surface, the periphery of the core being provided therearound with a series of spaced fingers between which the strand is wrapped.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a slide caster for furniture comprising a core, and a strand of fibrous material wrapped on the core to provide a fibrous facing for the caster, said fibrous facing being adapted for direct contact with the fioor or other surface, the periphery of the core being provided therearound with a series of spaced fingers between which the strand is wrapped, the outer portions of the fingers being angularly disposed.
