This invention relates to an adjustable hat block, the general object of the invention being to provide simple means for adjusting the size of the block so that the block can be used in different sizes of hats.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings Wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and' in whichz- Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention, with parts broken away.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view.
Figure 3 is a view taken at right angles to Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a view of the tubular member.
Figure 5 is a view of one of the blocks.
As shown in these views, the block A is of hollow construction and formed of the sections 1 and 2, the section 1 having a strip 3 connected to its edge portion, which has its outer part free so as to form a gripping part for the edge of the section 2 so that the block can be expanded and contracted with the edge portion of the member 2 moving in the space between the free parts of the strip 3 and the edge portion of the part 1.
A pair of substantially L-shaped springs 4 is connected to a portion of theA inner wall of the section 1, adjacent the upper end of the block by the clips 5 and a similar pair of springs 6 is connected to the section 2 by the clips '7. Each spring has a coil 8 at the junction of one arm thereof with the other and the two arms of the springs of each pair are placed together, as shown at 9, and extend into a hole 10 formed in a oircular block 11. These blocks iit in the tubular member 12 which is formed with the arcuate slots 13, each of which has one wall corrugated or toothed, as shown at 14. A pin 15 projects from each block 11, with the pin of one block engaging one of the grooves and the pin of the other block the other groove, as shown in Figure 2. Thus by turning the tubular member, the pin and arcuate slots will cause the blocks to move outwardly away from each other or inwardly, according to the direction of turning movement of the tubular member, and thus the springs 4 and 6 will impart movement to the sections 1 and 2 to expand or contract the block A.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed isz- 1. In combination. a hat block formed of two sections slidably connected together, a tubular member within the block and having arcuate grooves therein, a pair of members fitting in the tubular member and having projections thereon engaging the grooves whereby turning movement of the tubular member will project or retract the members fitting therein, and means for connecting said members with the sections of the block, such means consisting of two pairs of substantially L-shaped spring arms, each pair having portions connected with one of the adjacent sliding members and other portions with the adjacent section.
2. In a device of the class described, a hollow block formed of two sections slidably connected together, a tubular member located in thev block and having arcuate shaped grooves therein formed with ratchet teeth in certain walls thereof, a pair of blocks slidably arranged in the tubular member and having projections thereon extending through the slots, a pair of spring arms, each having one limb connected with one of the blocks and its other arm connected with a section, and a second pair of spring arms, each having one end connected with the other section and its other end connected with the other block.
