Description

H. A. MYERS WEATHER STRIP Y Feb. 27, 1934.
Filed July 22, 1932 INVENTOR ATTO R N EY Patented Feb. 27, 1934 TE STATS FFEQE This invention relates to metal weather strips, and its general object is to provide weather strip members which not only cooperate to form a leak proof connection between the sliding sashes of s a window, but also provide the parting bead therefor, and as the member which provides the parting bead is flexible, it will readily give with the expansion and contraction of the frame and sashes and thereby assure proper and easy movement of the sashes under all conditions, yet the joint is leak proof at all times as the device provides a perfect weather seal.
A further object of the invention is to provide a weather strip device that is easy to install, provides a neat appearance, is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and extremely eiiicient in operation and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination 29 and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference s will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken through the meeting sashes of a sliding sash window and illustrates the application of my device.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 22 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a perspective View of one of the sash carrying members.
Figure 4 is a similar view of the frame member.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the wear strip.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the letter A indicates one side portion of a window frame, and B the stop strips for the sliding sashes C of a window.
The side portion of the window frame, as shown, is provided with a vertically arranged groove which has disposed therein a portion of one of the members of the device which forms the subject matter of the present invention, and this member is provided from a single sheet of flexible material that is folded in a manner to provide an outer wall 1 which has formed therewith and extending at right angles thereto, side walls that include parallel portions 2 arranged in close proximity with respect to each other. The parallel portions 2 extend into laterally outwardly directed flanges 3 that have formed therewith parallel portions 4 and the parallel portions 4 have formed therewith the inner wall 5, the latter being provided by disposing the metal at right angles with respect to the side walls for arrangement in parallelism with the outer wall, as 69 clearly shown in Figure 4. The edges of the metal meet centrally and longitudinally of the inner wall, and are thence bent inwardly to provide converging tongues 6.
The outer wall 1 is provided with a plurality of aligned openings '7 for the purpose of receiving securing means such as nails 8 that are passed between the meeting edges of the metal which forms the inner wall 5, as well as between the tongues 6, so that the parallel portions 4: will be spread apart by the nails and thereby be disposed in contacting engagement with the side walls of the groove, as shown in Figure 2. This construction provides a leak proof connection between the frame and the weather strip member as will be n apparent.
The flanges 3 contact the inner face of the window frame portion as shown, and the weather strip member is bent so that beads 9 are arranged at the juncture of the parallel portions 2 with the so outer wall 1, and these beads 9 cooperate with the flanges 3 to provide channels upon opposite sides of the weather strip member as clearly shown in Figure 2.
Secured to each of the sashes C are weather strip members of like construction and which are substantially L-shape in cross section as best shown in Figure 2, with the wide portions 10 provided with openings to receive securing means for nails or the like 11 whereby the wide portions 10 may be secured to the outer sides of the sash rails, while the narrow portions 12 are provided with openings to accommodate securing means or the like such as nails 13 whereby they may be secured to the side walls of recesses that are i. formed in the sides of the sashes as clearly shown in Figure 2. The sash members are folded in a manner to provide flanges 14 that are arranged in parallelism with but spaced from the narrow portions 12 as shown in Figure 3, for the purpose of providing channels to accommodate a wear plate.
The wear plate is U -shape in cross section and has its eight portion 15 provided with openings to receive sheet metal screws 16 whereby the wear plate is fixed to the outer wall 1 of the weather strip member that is fixed to the window frame and the inwardly directed portions 17 of the wear plate are disposed in spaced relation with respect to the parallel portions 2 for the purpose of receiving the flanges 14 as clearly shown in Figure 2.
From the above description and disclosure of the drawing, it will be obvious that I have provided a weather strip device that includes a member which is secured to the side member of a window frame and not only cooperates with the other members of the weather strip device to provide a leak proof joint between the sliding sashes and the window frame, but also acts in the capacity as a parting bead for the sashes which are held in sliding association with respect to the window frame through the instrumentality of my weather strip device, but the stop strips B have a tendency to cooperate therewith for that purpose. However, this cooperation is unnecessary and the stop strips could act merely in the capacity as trim members.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is: V
1. A Weather strip device for a window having sliding sashes, comprising a one piece metallic member adapted to be secured to the frame of the window and providing the parting bead for the sashes, side walls included in said member and projecting outwardly from the frame, a front wall formed with the side walls in a manner to provide laterally directed beads at the juncture thereof, flanges formed with the side walls and co- 7 operating with the beads to provide channels, a
wear plate secured to the front wall and including inwardly directed spaced parallel portions engageable with the beads to be spaced from the side walls, members secured to the side rails of the sashes, and flanges formed with the sash carrying members and received in the channels for disposal in the space between the side walls and the inwardly directed spaced parallel portions for slidable movement.
2. The combination with a window including a grooved frame and sliding sashes, of a weather strip device comprising a member adapted to be received in the groove of the frame to provide a parting head for the sashes and formed from a single sheet of flexible metal bent to provide a front wall, side walls formed with the front wall, laterally directed beads formed with said member at the juncture of the front wall with the side walls oppositely disposed laterally extending flanges formed with the side walls and providing stops to limit the insertion of the member in the groove, an inner wall formed with the side walls, said metal being bent inwardly to provide meeting edges disposed centrally and longitudinally of the inner wall, converging tongues extending from the meeting edges, means passing through the front wall and guided through the meeting edges by the tongues for securing the member in the groove and for disposing the side walls in contacting engagement with the walls of the groove, a Wear plate fixed to the front wall and including portions engageable with the beads to be arranged in spaced relation with respect to the side walls of the member, and strip members secured to the sashes and including means slidably mounted between the said portions of the wear plate and the side walls.
