EXPANS ION JOINT Original Filed May 2, 1951 `/qliorney H. N. HENDERsoN l 1,948,916. l
Tatented Feb. 27, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EXPANSION JOINT Application May 2, 1931, Serial No. 534,671 Renewed November 22, 1933 1 Claim. I (Cl. SPL-17) material to permit relative expansion and con--A traction of said concrete sections, whereby to provide a more dependable road construction and to decidedly prolong the life of the road. `I: The present invention has reference to an improved expansion joint structure composed of a pair of duplicate parts arranged together in longitudinal alinement and in end to end abutting relationship, said parts being constructed of telescopically connected companion sections intended to operate in conjunction with one another to compensate for relative movement between the' concrete road sections caused by expansion and contraction.
In carrying the inventive conception into practice, I have provided a simple, economical and emcient expansion joint structure which, it is believed, is a novel contribution to the prior art, and a decided improvement in the industry and is capable of fulfilling the requirements of a structure oi' this class in a. highly satisfactory and practical manner.
ln the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a com- 113 plete expansion joint structure developed in accordance with the present invention showing the same fastened in the road bed.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the plane of the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is an end view.
The improved expansion joint herein illustrated and described is a substantially all-metal construction xnade up of separable parts to facilitate transportation and installation.
For example in Figures 1 and 2 it will be obm served that the complete joint structure when assembled is of longitudinal elongated configuration in top plan view, and it is made of a left hand part and a right hand part with said parts having their adjacent ends in abutting relationship to i@ provide for the desired continuity and to facilitate handling when embedding the structure in the road bed.
It is obvious however that the structure may be continuous from end to end, that is, not separated at the center. Each of these parts is in .o turn composed of interlitting telescopically connected companion sections 6 and 7 each section being channel-shaped in cross sectional configuration whereby to permit the anges 8 of the section 7 to lit telescopically Within the'anges u 9 of the section 6 as detailed in Figure 4. This arrangement allows the sections to slide one within the other to compensate for expansion and contraction of the road blocks or sections. v
'Ihe complete height of the sections 6 and 7 is 70 such as to permit the traction portion to occupy a plane substantially even with the traction surfaces of the road sections. At its outer end the section 7 is provided with a corner ear 10 and an end cover plate 11 is secured to this by a screw or suitable fastening as at 12.
The outer walls or web portions of these sections are provided at longitudinally spaced points with complemental pairs of vertically alined eyebolts 13 intended to accommodate anchoring stakes 14 which are driven down to the road bed as seen in Figure 1. These eye-bolts and their stakes 14 may be employed at the time of installing the expansion joint structure and removed after it has become partly set in the concrete.
In addition, the sections 6 and 7 are provided with outstanding horizontal anchoring pins or bolts 15 having their inner threaded ends extending through openings in the web portions 6 and 7 with retaining nuts 16 and 17 on said threaded portions to hold the bolts in place. These bolts are obviously imbedded in the concrete to maintainthe sections and parts of the structure in assembled relationship and at the same time to permit the desired telescoping action essential in g5 compensating for the expansion and contraction action of the concrete roadblock section.
The gist of the idea is predicated upon an allmetal structure wherein the longitudinally alined parts are arranged in end-to-end abutting relationship to provide a substantially hollow elongated boxlike i'lller disposed in the gap or space between the road sections. These complemental parts are composed of companion telescopically connected relatively slidable sections fastened to 105 the respective sections of the concrete road block by way of the bolts l5.
Then too, the utilization .of the eye-bolts 13 and the associated maintenance stakes 14 is a structural distinction. Moreover, the use of the cover 110 plates 11 and the ends of these box-like parts with the single anchoring point as at 10 and 12 is also important as' this allows the sections 6 and 7 to have the relative intertting and slidable action with respect to each other.
It is thought that the description taken in connection with the drawings will enable a clear understanding of the invention to be had. Therefore, a more lengthly description is thought unnecessary.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is to be understood that minor changes coming within neef-:,916
the eld of invention claimed may be resorted -if desired. Y
