This invention relates to an improved date setting device to be'usedin ticket-issuingmachines, cash registers, and other devices wherein it is desired to "print the date of a transaction.

The day printing wheels are generally made as two separate parts, one of which contains the numerals to 9 inclusive and the other the numerals 1 to 3 inclusive. The month print- :ZQ, ing wheel has also been made as a separate wheel. I do not propose to change this arrangement for to do so would require very large wheels which is not desirable. I do seek, however, to overcome the objection of rotating any of the 26, printing wheels which should not be adjusted to "change'the date from, for instance, the 3rd to the 4th.
My invention also relates to means to visually indicate on the outside of the machine what is the setting of the printing wheels on the inside of the machine. In setting the printing wheels the operator need only observe the visual indicator on the outside of the machine which instantly shows the date that the printing wheels are then set to print,

The toothed gear 32 is rigidly secured to a sleeve 40 which carries a toothed gear 41 which meshes with and drivesthe gear 20.
In operation, let us assume that the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1; that is, the printing disks 27, 29 and 34 are set to print Oct. 13 and the visual disks 14 and 18 show the same date, it being understood that the date to read on the disks 14 and 18 is on the horizontal line extending to the right from the center of same. The date may be changed to Oct. .14 by inserting the key '7 in the aperture 5-and rotating the same clockwise, until the 14 has been brought into the position in alignment with the'word Oct. This, of course, is accomplished directly through the gears 12 and 13, at the same time, however, the gear 23 has been rotated one tooth so that the'units printing wheel'27 is simultaneously set with the disk 14. Each day this simple operation is repeated. On changing from 19 to 20, or from 9to 10, or 29 to 30, it is necessary to rotate the tens printing disk 29 one step which is accomplished by means of the one-toothed disk 24 engaging the swiss gear 28. This is an ordinary transfer mechanism and requires no particular description. Hereinafter the printing wheels 2'? and 29 are referred to as the date printing wheels and the disk 14 as the indicating disk, in contradistinction to the month printing wheel and indicating disk. After the disk 14 has been rotated until the days of that month have been past, the key 7 is rotated until the number 1 appears in correct position. If the month, for instance, were January, which has 31 days, it would be necessary to rotate the key 7 nine spaces in order to set the mechanism for February 1. A To change from February to March would require a rotation of twelve spaces, being the difference between 40 and 28, the gear 13 having 40 teeth thereon. While this is taking place the gear 23 is constantly rotating the gear 25 and the one- "toothed disk 24. When the printing wheels 27 and 29 indicate the number 39 a further rotation will actuate the month printing wheel 34 through the one-toothed disk 24, swiss gear 28 and toothed disk 30, driving the swiss gear 31, the toothed gear 32, and the toothed gear 33, rotating the printing disk 34 one-twelfth of a revolution or the distance between two successive months. While at the same time the gear 32 has rotated the sleeve 40, gears 41, 20 and 19, thereby rotating the disk 14 one-twelfth of a revolution. The reason that a plurality of teeth are placed on the disk is that there are a plurality (2 or 3) sets of numbers 0 to 3 inclusive on the tens printing wheel 29. Such a construction avoids the necessity of continuing to rotate the mechanism until the tens printing wheel 29 had been rotated to 9, as would be necessary if the disk 30 were provided with a single tooth.
It is, therefore, obvious that by my improved structure the mechanism moves synchronously so so that the printing mechanism cannot rotate these .wheels and thereby destroy the correct setting of the same.
Having now described the preferred embodiment of my invention I claim:
1. a machine of the type described, units and tens printing wheels for dates, a disk to visually indicate the setting of said wheels, operative means interconnecting said wheels and disk and means whereby said wheels and disk may be adjusted to any desired indication.
2. In a machine of the type described, units and tens printing wheels for dates located within the machine, a disk located without the machine to visually indicate the setting of said wheels, and operative means interconnecting said wheels and said disk.
In a machine of the type described, a unit of days printing wheel, a tens of days printing wheel, a month printing wheel, and a common setting means forall of said wheels.
4. In a machine of the type described, a units printing wheel having indications 0 to 9 inclusive on its periphey, a tens printing wheel having sets of indications 0 to S inclusive on its periphery, a month printing wheel carrying indicia to represent the twelve months of the year, and a common setting means for all of said Wheels.
5. In a machine of the type described, date and month printing wheels, a disk to visually indicate the setting of the date printing wheels, a second disk to indicate the setting of the month printing wheels, and a common setting means for all of, said wheels and disks.
6. In a machine of the type described, date and month printing wheels, concentric disks having indicia thereon to indicate the setting of the said wheels, and means interconnecting all of said wheels and disks.
7 In a machine of the type described, concentric disks to indicate the month and date, said date indicating disk being provided with forty spaces and said month indicating disk being provided with twelve spaces, and means interconnecting said disks so that the month indicating 115 disk is moved one space after the date indicating disk has been rotated one complete revolution.
8. In a mechanism of the kind described, a shaft, a gear and a one-toothed disk secured 120 thereto, date printing wheels actuated by said gear and disk, a Geneva disk secured to the date printing wheel which is actuated by the onetoothed disk, a collar rotatably mounted on said shaft, a gear secured to said collar and actuated 125 by said Geneva disk, toothed gear secured to said collar, a month printing wheel, and a gear secured to said month printing wheel and meshing with said last mentioned gear.
9. In a machine of the class described, a shaft, 130 a gear rigidly secured thereto, a visual indicator actuated by said gear to indicate the days ofthe month, a ten-toothed gear and a one-toothed disk secured to said shaft, printing wheels to indicate the day of the month actuated by said 135 ten-toothed gear and one-toothed disk, a Geneva disk secured to the date printing wheel actuated by the one-toothed disk, a collar rotatably mounted on said shaft, a swiss gear and two toothed gears secured to said collar, a month printing wheel, a gear carried thereby and meshing with one of the last mentioned gears on said collar, a month indicating disk, and a gear secured thereto and driven by the other of said gears on said collar.
10. In a machine of the class described, a shaft, a gear rigidly secured thereto, a visual indicator actuated by said gear to indicate the days of the month, a ten-toothed gear anda one-toothed disk secured to said shaft, printing wheels to 150 to prevent accidental rotation of said printing wheels.
11. In a machine of the type described, units and tens printing wheels for dates, a disk to visually indicate the setting of said wheels means to operate manually said wheels, operative means interconnecting said wheels and disk, and means to prevent the accidental rotation of said wheels and disk.
