Description
Feb. 13, 1934. G. K. ANDERSON THREAD PACKAGE Filed May 25, 1931 WM ATTORN EY5 Patented Feb. 13, 1934- UNETEB STATES PATENT OFFIE THREAD PACKAGE Application May 25, 1931.
2 Claims.
My invention relates to packages of thread, and has special reference to spools for thread and yarn.
In packing certain threads and yarns, such as mending cotton for the retail trade, it has heretofore been customary to wind the thread upon cylindrical paper drums, the thread being wound across the ends of the drum to provide a ball type package. Such packages, however, have been found objectionable in some respects. The uneven surfaces provided by the cross windings at the ends result in the balls being difficult to stack evenly on the counters or shelves of retail stores, and also the windings are liable to slough off the ends of the balls while on display and the thread become soiled or dirty. Moreover, this ball package is more or less inconvenient in use, the thread being liable to slacken and slip on the paper drum as it is drawn therefrom.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a thread package which has all of the advantages of the ball package above described, while overcoming the disadvantages thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved spool for thread and yarn.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved thread package in its preferred form;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View, partly in elevation, of my improved spool; and
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view, on an enlarged scale, corresponding to a portion of Fig. 3.
The spool illustrated in Figs. 1 to l, inclusive, of the drawing, is provided with a tubular core 2 and paper disks 4 secured to the ends of the core. The core 2 may be made of corrugated newsboard or similar paper so as to provide a corrugated or otherwise roughened outer surface. Each of the disks 4 has a central countersunk portion 6 and an outwardly and inwardly curved rim 8 which sets over and is firmly secured to the end of the core. The inner edge of this rim may project a slight distance beyond the periphery of the core and is directed inwardly so as to provide a threadretaining flange. This rim 8, by extending over the corners of the wall of the end of the core and being glued thereto, insures that the disk is firmly secured to the end of the core so that there is no danger of the disks coming off. The concave rim also serves to reinforce the disk. The inwardly directed edge of the rim provides an effective thread-retaining means and is so formed that there is no danger of the thread or yarn catching thereon during the winding of the pack- Serial No. 539,796
age. The rims 8 so reinforce the disks as to insure that they will not become bent or distorted while the package is in use so as to allow the thread to catch between them and the ends of the core. The countersunk central portion of the disk provides a convenient fiat surface to which a label 9 may be glued or pasted, the rim protecting the edge of the label from being rubbed 01f or accidentally removed. The inwardly turned rims together with the roughened surface of the core, insure against the thread slipping or sloughing ofi while the package is in use. The rims 8 merge into the surface of the wound thread, thus presenting a neat and attractive appearance.
If desired, the end disks may be provided with axially arranged apertures 10, and a paper band 12 may be secured about the wound thread.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A spool of the class described comprising a tubular core of paper and disks of paper secured to the ends of the core, the core being of a thickness substantially greater than that of the disks and each disk having a counter-sunk por tion set into the end of the core and a reinforcing concave rim portion fitted over and glued to the end of the core, with the inwardly directed edges of the concave rim portions extending slightly beyond the periphery of the core to provide a thread retaining flange.
2. A spool according to claim 1 wherein said core is of corrugated newsboard providing a roughened external surface serving, together with the inwardly directed edges of the concave rim portions of the paper disks to prevent sloughing oif of thread wound upon the core.
GEORGE K. ANDERSON.
