Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in suspenders or braces for mens wear. The object is to provide improved means for adjusting the spread of the shoulder straps, which shall be very 5 flat and smooth and which shall be attractive in appearance, and easy to manipulate, which shall be simple in construction and at the same time durable. It is especially the object of the invention to provide a structure that is extremely flat,
smooth and or" flexible or yielding material, in order to prevent discomfort to the wearer, and also a structure which will retain its position of adjustment except when manually operated.
Referring to the drawing, which illustrates merely by way of example, a preferred embodiment of the invention;--
Fig. 1 is a View in elevation of the outer side of the rear portion of the suspenders.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of same.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary View of the inner side of the structure shown in Fig. 1; that is, the side next to the body of the wearer.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4, 4 of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In Fig. 1, 7 indicates the rear ends of the shoulder straps, 8 the pads securing the same to the narrow flat connecting straps 9, which, in turn, are both connected to the vertical back strap 10, 3 by means of the single pad 11. The straps 9 which are flat and adapted to lie preferably in the same plane in all positions of adjustment, are threaded through the adjusting slide formation 12. This slide formation 12 is made preferably of two comparatively thin plies or layers 13 and 14, of flexible or yielding material, such as leather, stitched together, as at 15 and 16, to provide converging channels or passages 17 for said connecting straps .9. The outer ply 13 is shield shaped, terminating at the lower end with free pointed portion 18. The inner ply 14 terminates on the horizontal line 19, above the said lower point 18, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The channels or passages 17 are each formed 5 by parallel, are-shaped lines of stitching; the arcs being converged outwardly, so that the straps will be slightly distorted in the passages when slack, but will lock with the upper and lower outer edges of the channels when the straps are taut.
What I claim is:
1. A suspender comprising a pair of shoulder straps, a single vertical back strap, a pair of relatively narrow flat straps, each connected to a shoulder strap, and both connected at their other ends to the single back strap and a flat sliding Serial No. 670,231
formation comprising layers of flexible material having channels formed therein with parallel margins, to provide passages for the narrow flat straps.
2. A suspender comprising a pair of shoulder straps, a pad of flexible material connected to the rear end of each shoulder strap, a single vertical back strap with a pad of flexible material connected to the upper end thereof, a pair of relatively narrow flat straps, each connected to a shoulder strap by means of its pad, and both connected, at their other ends, to the back strap by means of its pad, and a flat sliding formation comprising layers of flexible material having channels formed therein with parallel margins, said channels being arranged side by side and in the same plane, to provide passages for the narrow flat straps.
3. A suspender comprising a pair of shoulder straps, a single vertical back strap, a pair of relatively narrow flat straps, each connected to a shoulder strap, and both connected at their other ends to the single back strap, and a flat sliding formation comprising layers of flexible material having channels formed therein, said channels each formed by parallel arc-shaped lines of stitches to provide passages for said narrow straps.
4. A suspender comprising a pair of shoulder straps, a single vertical back strap, a pair of relatively narrow fiat straps, each connected to a shoulder strap, and both connected at their other ends to the single back strap, and a flat sliding formation comprising layers of flexible material having channels formed therein, said channels each formed by parallel arc-shaped lines of stitches to provide passages for said narrow straps, said arc-shaped lines being convexed outwardly, so that the upper and lower outer edges of the channels will lock with the straps when taut.
5. A suspender comprising a pair of shoulder straps, a pad of flexible material connected to the rear end of each shoulder strap, a single vertical back strap with a pad of flexible material connected to the upper end th reof, a pair of relatively narrow flat straps, each connected to a shoulder strap, by means of its pad, and both connected at their other ends to the single back strap by means of its pad, and a flat sliding formation comprising layers of flexible material having areshaped channels formed therein side by side and in the same plane, to provide passages for the narrow flat straps.
