This invention relates to improvements in the construction of luggage carrier cases, and is especially applicable to that type of cases known as hand luggage.

An object of the invention is to provide a luggage carrier case which is simple and rigid in construction, and which is adapted to receive and to effectively confine various types of luggage or paraphernalia.

Various forms of so-called wardrobe suitcases have heretofore been introduced to the traveling trade, these cases having been so designated by virtue of the fact that they provide for the storage of certain articles of wearing apparel such as dresses, coats and the like. Most of the prior cases of this general type are objectionable either because they are too bulky, or because they are too heavy, or because they do not effectively provide for the housing of wearing apparel without crushing, or because they are too complicated for manipulation by a novice. The more recent introduction of travel by air, has made it necessary to reduce both the size and weight of cases of this type to an absolute minimum without sacrificing capacity and without undesirably crushing the confined garments. It is also desirable in carrier cases of this kind, to provide simple and effective means for permitting storage of a maximum quantity of miscellaneous luggage, such as garments, hats and so forth.

It is a more specific object of the present invention to provide an improved luggage carrier case which meets all of the foregoing requirements in a simple housing of minimum size, maximum strength, and relatively large capacity.

Another specific object of the invention is to provide improved means for confining wearing apparel such as dresses, within a case without undesirably crushing the same.

These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description.

A clear conception of several embodiments of the invention and of the mode of constructing and of manipulating luggage carrier cases built in accordance therewith, may be had by referring to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification in which like reference characters designate the same or similar parts in the various views:

Fig. 1 is a vertical section through an improved luggage carrier case, the section being taken along the line 1-1 of Fig. 3;

While the carrier cases shown and described herein by way of illustration of several embodiments of the present invention, are of a particular type, it is to be understood that the improvement is capable of more general application. The use of the terms bottom and cover in connection with the sections of the case, is not to be considered as a limitation, and this assertion also applies to other specific terms employed herein primarily for the sake of clearness.

. Referring specifically to Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, the improved luggage carrier case shown therein comprises in general a base section 11,

a cover section 12 secured to the base section 11 by means of a hinge 13, a handle 14 associated with the end of the base section 11 remote from the hinge 13, and a lock 15 for retaining the cover section 12 in closed position relative to the base section 11. The base section 11 may be provided with side pockets as shown, or may have partitions therein for accommodating storage of various articles of luggage, and stop straps 16 may be provided at opposite sides of the sections 11, 12 for the purpose of limiting the swinging movement of the cover section 12 relative to the base section 11.

A removable garment carrier 17, which is adapted to receive and to retain garments 18, is associated with the cover section 12 and is adapted to be disposed entirely within the section 12.

The lower extremity 20 of the garment carrier 17 is formed for disposition within a pair of socket members 19 secured within the cover section 12, and the upper swinging end 21 of the carrier 17 is provided with stops 22 which are adapted to coact with the end wall of the cover section 12 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, in order to prevent the carrier 17 from leaving the socket members 19 when the carrier is swung within the cover section 12. The garment carrier 17 is moreover provided with the side cut-outs 23 which permit convenient gripping of the carrier when the same is to be swung forwardly to the position shown in Fig. 2. The socket members 19 are provided with front flanges 24 cooperable with the carrier 17 to retain the same in garment receiving position, and retaining straps 25 having snap fasteners 26 associated therewith, serve to hold the carrier 1'7 within the cover section 12 when the case sections 11, 12 are closed.

When it is desired to apply a garment to the carrier 17, it is only necessary to open the case as shown in Fig. 1 and to subsequently swing the carrier 17 forwardly to the position shown in Fig. 2 after releasing the retaining straps 25. The garment 18 may then either be hung over the carrier 17 while retained within the socket members 19, or the carrier 17 may be completely removed from the members 19 and the garments subsequently wrapped around the upper and lower end portions 21, 20 of the carrier. After the garments have been applied to the carrier 17, the latter may be swung back into the cover section 12 and the straps 25 connected by the snap fastener 26 in order to retain the carrier and the garments thereon in position within the section 12.

Referring specifically to Figs. 6 to 10 inclusive, the modified luggage carrier case shown therein comprises in general a base section 31, a cover section 32 secured to the base section 31 by means of a hinge 33, a handle 34 associated with the end of the base section 31 remote from the hinge 33, and a lock 35 for retaining the cover section 32 in closed position relative to the base section 31. The base section 31 may likewise be provided with side pockets as shown, or may have partitions therein for receiving various articles of luggage, and stop straps 36 are provided at the opposite sides of the base and cover sections for the purpose of limiting the swinging movement of the cover section 32 relative to the base section 31.

'pair of socket members 39 secured to the opposite inner side walls of the cover section, and the upper swinging end 41 of the garment carrier is provided with a bead 42 for engaging the garments 38. The garment carrier 37 is also provided with side cut-outs 43 for permitting convenient removal thereof from within the cover section 32,and the lower portion of the carrier 37 is provided with abutments 44. The socket members 39 are provided with stop flanges 45 engageable with the abutments 44 to prevent longitudinal movement of the carrier 37 within the cover section 32. The front portions of the socket members 39 are provided with inclined flanges 46 cooperable with the garment carrier 37 to retain the same in garment receiving position, and a harness 4'7 secured to the upper portion of section 32, has lower hooks 48 cooperable with eyes 49 to retain the garment carrier 37 within the cover section.

When it is desired to apply a garment to the carrier 37, it is only necessary to open the case as shown in Fig. 6 and to subsequently swing the carrier 37 forwardly to the position shown in Fig. 7 after releasing the harness 47 and throwing the same rearwardly over the cover section 32. The garments 38 may then either be hung over the carrier 37 while retained within the socketmembers 39, or the carrier 37 may be completely removed from the members 39 and the garments subsequently wrapped around the upper and lower end portions 41, 40 of the carrier. After the garments have been thus applied to the carrier 37, the latter may be swung back into the cover section 32 and the harness 47 restored to the position shown in Fig. 8 in order to retain the carrier 37 and the garments within the cover section 32.

From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the present improvement provides simple and readily manipulable means for confining garments within a section of a carrier case, without undesirably crushing the garments. The garment carriers 17,37 may be conveniently removed from or applied to the retaining sockets or members, and may be effectively retained within the cover section either by means of the straps 25 or the harness 47. methods of retaining the garment carrier within the socket members, have been illustrated, it will be apparent that other means for accomplishing this result, may be employed. garment carrier may be formed of veneered wood wrapped around the carrier in a manner to prevent the ends of the garments from dropping into the base section, when the cover section is closed. The socket members 39 have the advantage over the members 19, of permitting application of more clothing to the carrier 37 without danger of crushing, since the socket members 39 permit the carrier to move outwardly away from the cover in accordance with the quantity of clothing applied to the carrier.

The bead 42 applied to the garment carrier 3'7 1 also assists in avoiding undesirable creasing of the garments, and the stop flanges 45 coact with the abutments 44 to eliminate possible interference with the movement of the carrier 37 into the cover section.

It should be understood that it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact details of construction herein shown and described, for various modifications within the scope of the claims may occur to persons skilled in the art.

It is claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a carrier case, a base section, a cover section movable relatively to said base section, a

garment carrier formed of a rigid sheet of substantially the same size and shape as that of the cover section interior and having upper and lower edges the former of which is movable with respect to the latter entirely into and out of said cover section, and socket members located en-- tirely within said. cover section for confining the lower carrier edge within said cover section and for limiting the swinging movement of said carrier, said members being formed to permit free vertical removal of said carrier from said cover section when said carrier is swung away from said section.

2. In a carrier case, a base section, a cover section movable relatively to said base section, a garment carrier formed of a rigid sheet and being movable into and out of said cover section, socket members secured entirely within said cover for limiting the movement of said carrier with respect to said cover section, and means associated with said carrier and cooperable only with the corners of said cover section remote from said socket members for preventing movement thereof out of said socket members when said carrier is disposed within said cover section.

3. In a carrier case, a base section, a cover section movable relatively to said base section, socket members secured to the opposite side walls of said cover section, a garment carrier formed of a rigid sheet and having its lower edge cooperable with said socket members and having its upper 'edge movable into and out of said cover section, said upper edge being medially recessed for the reception of garments, and means for preventing movement of said carrier out of said socket members while said carrier is disposed within said cover section, said carrier being freely removable from said members when moved away from said cover section.

4. In a carrier case, a base section, a cover section hinged relatively to said base section, upwardly open socket members secured within said cover section adjacent the cover section hinge, a garment carrier swingable within said socket members, means for preventing movement of said carrier out of said members when swung into said cover section, and means for confining said carrier within said cover section to prevent swinging of said carrier relative to said cover section.

5. In a carrier case, a base section, a cover section movable relatively to said base section, socket members secured to the opposite inner side walls of said cover section, a garment carrier comprising a sheet of material having one edge cooperable with said socket members and having its opposite edge recessed medially for the reception of garments and movable toward and away from said cover section, and means at the ends of said opposite edge for preventing movement of said carrier away from said socket members when said carrier is disposed Within said cover section, said carrier being freely removable from said socket members when moved within said members away from said cover section.

6. In a wardrobe case, a pair of hingedly connected sections, supporting members in one of said sections near the hinged connection between said sections, a garment carrier having upper and lower garment engaging edge portions and being movably mounted near said lower portion upon said supporting members, and means for maintaining said carrier in coaction with said supporting members when said carrier is disposed within the section which carries said supporting members, said supporting members being formed to permit free bodily removal of said carrier from said section when said upper portion is moved out of said sect-ion.
