This invention relates to a wrench of sturdy construction and at the same time one that is eflicient in removing damaged nuts.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a wrench of such sturdy construction that it can be dropped or thrown around without material damage or injury to the wrench itself or lessening of its efficiency in removing damaged nuts.
A further object is to provide a wrench that is easy and eflicient in operation, economical of manufacture, simple in construction, and will withstand hard usage without impairing its operation and efliciency.
Still another object is to provide a wrench that may be used for tightening and removing ordinary nuts as well as nuts or other screw parts formed with a socket.
A further object is to provide'a wrench that may also when desired be used as a hammer without impairing its usefulness as a wrench.
My invention further resides in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and while I have shown therein a preferred embodiment, I wish it understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5--5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 7 is a perspective of a block to be inserted and held between the jaws when the wrench is to be used for a hammer.
Fig. 8 is a perspective View of a block to be held between the jaws of the wrench when the wrench is to be used for removing nuts or other parts having a socket therein.
Referring in detail to the drawing, it will be -seen that my improved wrench comprises a handle 1, to which is securely iixed a stationary jaw 2, formed as seen in Fig. 5, with a noncircular opening 3, through which slidably extends the shank 4 of the movable jaw 5. As
seen in Figs. 2 and 4 the end por 4 opposite to that tion of shank carrying the movable jaw 5 is formed with screw threads 6, which threads mesh with corresponding threads '7 in the cylindrical portion 8 of the operating grip 9, which grip is a composite member formed of the lower cylindrical portion 8 and the upper sleeve member 10. As will be seen in Fig.

This brings shoulder 20 into rotative sliding engagement with the lower 16, and also brings shoulder 14 of edge of flange sleeve 10 into rotative sliding engagement with shoulder 15 of flange 16, thus securing the grip member 9 rotatably but non-movable longitudinally upon handle 1.
The shank 4 of movable jaw 5 is then inserted through opening 3 in the stationary jaw 2 and pushed inwardly therethrough until the threaded portion 6 engages thread rotation of grip portion 9 in the 7, after which A proper direction will draw shank 4 within handle 1, and move the slidable jaw 5 toward the stationary jaw 2, either entirely thereagainst or spaced therefrom any desired distance to permit entry of a nut within one of the pairs of jaws, after which the jaws are tightened on the nut by further rotation of grip 9, and as seen in Figs. 1
and 3, the jaws 2 and 5 are provi ded with four 1179K,
different sizes of complemental members to provide four pairs of cooperating jaws to accommodate different sizes of nuts.
In Fig. 7 is shown a block of steel, or other desirable material, said block being formed with a reduced portion 21 and a head 22. When the reduced portion 21 is tightened between any one of the pairs or" jaws desired, the head 22 may be used as the face of a hammer to enable the wrench to function as a hammer, when desired, and Without injuring the jaws of the wrench.
In Fig. 8 is shown an elongated block 23, which may be tightened between any of the pairs of jaws desired, and used when it is desired to tighten or loosen a nut or other part formed with a socket. This hammer block and block 23 increases the range of usefulness of the wrench, It is, of course, readily understood that other sizes of block 23 may be furnished to accommodate operation upon parts having sockets of different dimensions.
While I have shown the unthreaded portion of shank 4 of movable jaw 5 as being hexagonal in cross-section, it will be understood that any other non-circular cross-section may be used as desired. The exterior surface of grip portion 9, including sleeve 1G and cylindrical portion 8, may be milled or otherwise roughened as at 24 to enable the operator to vfirmly grip the same with his hand during use.
Shank 4 is preferably provided at its upper end with a reduced portion 25, which is seated and welded within a corresponding opening in the movable jaw 5, thus providing a iirm and rigid connection between the movable jaw and its shank. If desired, these two parts may be made integral or otherwise secured, the requirement being that they be so rigidly secured together that movable jaw 5 will not become loosened through hard use from its shank 4.
The construction described above gives a wrench of great strength and durability, and one between the jaws of which a nut even though kdamaged may be very tightly secured, thus re-Y sulting in a great saving of time in removal of damaged nuts as Well as undamaged nuts. This tight engagement. of the jaws with the nut is made possible by the largel leverage produced by the operators hand upon the composite grip member 9, which is located at the lower or free end of the handle.
Having now described my invention.
I claim:-
l. A wrench comprising a handle provided at one end with a stationary jaw and at the other end with an annular flange, a grip member having an elongated reduced bearing portion extended into the open flanged end of said handle and having rotative engagement therewith, a sleeve encircling the grip member and also encircling an adjacent portion of said handle at a position concentric with said bearing portion, said sleeve beingnormally fixed with respect to said grip member and having an annular shoulder rotatively engaging said ilange, and a movable jaw having a shank adjustably engaging said grip member, said shank and said stationary jaw having compiemental means constructed and arranged to prevent relative rotation thereof.
2. A wrench comprising a tubular handle of circular cross section provided at one end with a stationary jaw and at the other end with an annular flange, said jaw having an opening therethrough or polygonal cross section and in register with a contiguous open end of said handle, a grip member having an externally threaded Aportion and also provided with an elongated reduced bearing portion, said bearing being extended into the open flanged end of the handle and having rotative engagement therewith, said reduced bearing portion providing a shoulder- "ke seat for the flanged end of said handle, a sleeve having a threaded portion engaging the threaded portion of the grip member and also having a portion encircling said handle at a position concentric with said bearing portion, said sleeve having an internal annular shoulder rotatively engaging said flange, means for normally preventing relative movement of the grip member and said sleeve, and a movable jaw having a shank adjustably engaging said grip member, said shank being of a section complemental to that oi the opening in said stationary jaw and arranged as to prevent relative rotation of said slianlr and said jaw.
3. A wrench comprising a grip member having an internally threaded bore and provided at one end with an exteriorly threaded reduced portion, an elongated reduced bearing portion cooperating with said reduced portion to provide an annular shoulder, a handle provided at one end with a stationary wrench jaw and at its other end with an annular flange, said ianged end being open and enclosing the bearing portion of the grip member so as to have rotative engagement therewith, a coupling sleeve having threaded engagement with the externally threaded portion of the grip member and having another portion enclosing said handle at a position concentric with said bearing portion and also having an annular shoulder so positioned as to engage said flange, whereby the handle and the grip member are freely rotatable with respect to each other and relative longitudinal displacement is prevented, means for normally preventing relative movement of the coupling sleeve and the grip member, and a movable jaw member having a shank extended axially through the handle and provided with a complemental portion engaging the threaded bore of the grip member, said shank and said stationary jaw having complemental means so constructed and arranged as to prevent relative rotation of the movable jaw with respect to the stationary jaw.
