64 Claims. (Cl. 12-42) This invention relates to trimming machines and is illustrated as embodied in a machine designed to bevel one of two superimposed shoe parts.
In the manufacture of shoes, it is customary to apply a single piece of cover material commonly known as a side cover to the rear and to the sides of a wood heel, for example, and to turn the top, the forward, and the bottom marginal portions of the cover which extend beyond the heel upon the attaching face, the breast, and the top-lift-receiving face of the heel respectively and then to secure the marginal portions of the cover. emending beyond the heel to the respective surfaces upon which they have been turned. After the side cover has been securely laid upon the heel and before the entire breast of the heel is covered with a separate breast cover, the portions of the side cover upon the breast of the heel are trimmed by beveling cuts which start at the breast edges of the heel and which terminate at or near the original edges of the cover. After the breast cover has been applied to a heel, the side cover of which has been trimmed as above described, the breast of the covered heel has substantially the same curvature as the breast of the uncovered wood heel, whereas if the breast cover were applied over the edge of an untrimmed marginal portion of a side cover secured to the breast of the heel, bulges extending height-,
wise of the heel would be formed where the breast cover overlaps said untrimmed marginal portions of the side cover. Furthermore, by beveling the marginal portions of the side cover upon the breast of the heel, material is trimmed from the smooth, grain side of said portions, and roughened flesh portions of the cover, to which the breast cover may easily be secured, are left upon the breast of the heel. In order that the marginal portion of the cover secured to the attaching face of the heel will not cause a bulge to be formed around the marginal portion of said attaching face and in order to roughen the grain side of the inturned portion so that the covered heel may be more easily secured to the heel-seat portion of the shoe, it is also customary to bevel the marginal portions of the cover upon the.
attaching face of the heel from just within the rim of the attachingface of the heel to the edge of the marginal portion of the cover secured to the attaching face.
There is described and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 1,834,139 granted December l, 1931 on an application filed in my name, a machine by the aid of which the abovementioned operation may be quickly and accurately performed.
It is an object of this invention toprovide an improved machine for still more effectively and expeditiously trimming one of two superimposed shoe parts. With the above object in view and in accordance with a feature of this invention, the illustrated machine is provided with a curved cutting blade and a gage positioned adjacent to, the blade, the blade being constructed and arranged to skive a margin of a cover which hasv been secured to a face of a heel to a feather edge as the gage progressively engages the cover margin before corresponding portions of the cover margin are progressively engaged by the blade, to guide the heel past the blade.
The illustrated machine, which is described with reference to the beveling of inturned mar-' ginal portions of heel covers laid upon the breasts of heels, comprises a cutter of the band knife type adapted to be flexed along a selected portion to form a convex cutting portion thereof and gages for guiding the heels, to which the heel covers have been applied, relatively to the convex cutting portion of the knife to bevel said 30 marginal portions of the heel cover. In order to guide the heel past the flexed portion of the band knife during the beveling operation and in accordance with a feature of the invention, the illustrated machine is provided with a gage posi- 35 tioned at one side and immediately ahead of the cutting edge of the knife for progressively engaging an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover upon the breast of the heel prior to the progressive engagement of the cutter with corresponding portions of said marginal portion of the cover to regulate the depth of the beveling'cut.
Where it has been found convenient to bevel simultaneously the inturned marginal portions of a heel cover upon the breast of the heel, it is advantageous positively to centralize the breast of the heel widthwise thereof relatively to the flexed portion of the cutter in order that the beveled marginal portions may be similar to each other at opposite sides of the breast of the heel. With this end in view and in accordance with another feature of the invention, the machine is provided with gages for positively centralizing the shoe part relatively to the cutter as the shoe part and the cutter are moved relatively to each other to perform the beveling operation. The gages of the illustrated machine, in accordance with a further feature of the invention, are constructed and arranged to engage opposite sides of the heel and are movable toward and away from each 116 other, each of the gages at all times being positioned at an equal distance from the point of greatest convexity of the flexed portion of the knife. The movement of the centering gages is limited and the gages are normally urged away from each other and are movable toward each other by a treadle.
The convexity of the illustrated band knife may be varied according to the shape of the breast of the heel to which the cover has been applied. In order that the gage which regulates the depth of the beveling cut and one of the gages which centers the heel relatively to the flexed portion of the knife may be moved as a unit for adjustment to substantially their former respective positions with reference to the operating portion of the band knife when the shape of the flexed portion of the band knife has been changed, these gages, in accordance with a further feature of this invention, are positioned upon a gage carrier mounted for pivotal adjustment.
. In order efiectively to trim portions of the inturned marginal portion of the side cover which are rendered inaccessible if, as is commonly the case, an untrimmed top lift on the heel being operated upon interferes with the heel-guiding gages and in accordance with another feature of this invention, the illustrated machine is providv ed with a lever constructed and arranged to move the band knife with reference to the shoe-engaging instruinentalities in a path substantially at rightangles to the cutting edge of the knife and to a position ahead of the effective gaging surface j of the gage which regulates the depth of the beveling cut. This lever is conveniently operated by hand and may be normally held out of contact with the knife by a spring.

The illustrated machine in many respects is similar to the machine disclosed in the abovementioned United States Letters Patent No. 1,834,139 and comprises a main frame 20 (Fig. 1) for supporting a cutter or a band knife 22 together with mechanism for operating the same, and an operating head 24 (Figs. 1 and 2) constructed and arranged to flex a portion 26 of the knife 22 and to position a heel 28 having inturned marginal portions 30, 32 of its cover 34 laid upon and applied to its breast 36 and to its attaching face 38 respectively relatively to the flexed portion 26 of the knife 22 for beveling the inturned marginal portions 30, 32 of the cover as the heel is moved past the flexed portion of the knife.
The band knife 22 is positioned for movement in a direction 40 upon a pair of drums 42, 44 (Fig. 1). the former of which is mounted for rotation within a fixed bearing 46 secured to the frame and is operated by a belt 48 driven by a pulley 50 upon a drive shaft 52, and the latter of which is mounted for movement toward and away from the drum 42 within a slidable bearing 54 supported by the machine frame and is normally urged away from the drum 42 by the drag of a weight 56 attached to the end 58 of the bearing 54 through a cord 60 which runs over a small pulley 62 mounted upon the main frame 20. It
will thus be clear that tension in the band knife will normally be maintained and that the lmife may be easily removed and be replaced when the slidable bearing 54 is moved to the left from its operative position. Replacement of knives is conveniently efiected by turning a set screw 64 in threaded relation with the frame 20 and arranged to contact with the end 58 of the bearing 54 and to slide the bearing 54 to the left. During the operation of the machine the set screw 64 which is out of contact with the bearing 54 also serves as an abutment to limit the movement of the bearing 54 to the right (Fig. 1) in case the knife 22 should break.
The upper suspended portion 68 of the knife is guided in a casing '70 attached to the frame 20 and including knife cleaning material 72 and the lower portion 74 of the knife between the drums is guided by rollers 76 which contact with the outside face '78 (Fig. 2) of the band knife and are mounted upon bearings or pins 77 extending from the frame 20. In order to clean successive portions of the knife 22 after the beveling operation, the machine is equipped with a scraper 80 which engages opposite sides of the knife and also serves as a guide for the knife.
In order to provide for conveniently sharpening the. knife 22, the machine includes a rotary grinder 82 secured to a shaft 84 mounted for rotation in a bearing 86 supported through the arms 88 for swinging movement about a shaft 90 to one end "of which is keyed a two-grooved pulley 92 constructed and arranged to receive power from a drive belt 94 and to transmit it through a belt 96 to the grinder shaft 84. The grinder 82 may be swung into and out of engagement with the knife 22 by first releasing a lock screw 98 in threaded relation with the frame 20 of the machine and passing through an arcuate slot 100 in a forwardly extending lug 102 of the bearing 86, and then by turning the knurled nut 104 which is screwed upon a rod 106 pivotally mounted upon the lug 102 and passing through recesses 108 in ears 110 of a swivel 112 attached to the machine frame 20.
In order to prevent the operator from coming in contact with the knife-operating mechanism, these parts are encased in the frame of the machine but may be readily inspected by opening the doors 114 hinged at 116 tothe frame 20.
The operating head 24, which comprises mechanism for flexing the portion 26 of the knife 22 and members for positioning a heel relatively to the flexed portion 26 for beveling the inturned marginal portions 30 of the side cover 34 upon the breast of the heel as the heel is moved past the knife, will now be described. In order to form the flexed portion 26, the machine is pro-. vided with a knife holddown 113 constructed and arranged to engage the inner face 120 (Fig. 2) of the knife 22 between rollers 76 which engage the outer face 78 of the knife and are rotatably mounted upon the main frame 22 upon bearings or pins 77.
The holddown 118 comprises a foot 124 having a smooth undersurface 126 along which the knife 22 slides, said foot being vertically adjusted heightwise of the knife 22 to change the convexity of the flexed portion 26 by turning a knurled nut 128 (Figs. 1 ande) which is in threaded engagement with an arm 130 of the holddown 118, the
arm 130 being slidingly supported in a box 132 positioned at the forward end of a T-shaped slide 134. The foot 124 of the holddown 118 may be adjusted widthwise of the knife 22 in directions indicated by reference numeral 136 (Fig. 4), in order initially to set up the machine or to accommodate knives of different widths, by forwardly or rearwardly positioning the T-shaped slide 134 through an adjustment screw 138 which is in threaded relation with the T-shaped slide 134 and is mounted for rotation in but secured against movement lengthwise thereon in an upstanding lug 140 of the machine frame 20. When the proper adjustment of the foot 124 is effected, the T-shaped slide 134 is clamped in operative position by a bolt 14-2 passing through a slot 144 in the T-shaped slide 134 and having its lower portion 46 (Fig. 2) in threaded engagement with the machine frame.
In operating on the inturned marginal portions 30 of a side cover 34 upon the-breast 36 of a Louis heel with the aid of the illustrated machine and as described and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 1,834,677 granted December 1, 1931 on an application filed in my name, it is convenient to bevel simultaneously the inturned marginal portions 30 of the side cover at the lower part of the heel (Figs. 5, 6 and 7), the beveling cut starting at about half way up the breast of the heel and progressing to the top-lift-receiving face 148 of the heel, and then to bevel successively the inturned marginal portions at the upper part of the heel, each of the cuts starting just below the first cut on the breast of the heel and progressing to the attaching face 38 of the heel. In operating-upon Cuban heels, the first operation is similar to the first operation above described in connection with Louis heels, the heel being then reversed and the two inturned marginal portions of the cover at the upper part of the breast being trimmed simultaneously by a 80 cut starting below the point of the first out and progressing toward the attaching face of the heel.
The mechanism for guiding the heel relatively to the flexed portion 26 of the knife 22 as the heel is moved past the knife will now be described. Since the mechanism designed for this purpose and located at opposite sides of the holddown 118 is substantially the same at opposite sides of the holddown, it will be necessary to describe but one side, it being borne in mind that the opposite side has a reversed but correspondingpart.
In order to support the heel-positioning mechanism, an angular member or gage carrier 150 is hinged at its forward portion upon the pins 77 and may be adjusted in various positions about the pins 77 through a rod 152 the lower end of which is pivoted to the carrier 150 and the upper threaded portion 15% of which passes through reesses in ears 156 mounted upon swivels 157 attached to the machine frame 20 and is moved 1 along the recesses by a knurled nut 153 which fits into a slot between the ears 156 and is in threaded relation with the rod 152. After the gage carrier 150 has been correctly positioned by turning the knurled nut 158, the rod 152 is clamped to the ear 156 by the set screw 160, securely to hold the carrier 150 in adjusted position.
The heel is positioned relatively to the knife during the above-mentioned beveling operation by gages 162, which engage the breast of the heel and are commonly known as breastrgages, or by the breast gages 162 in combination with gages 164 which engage the sides of the heel and may be referred to as side gages and serve to centralize the breast of the heel relatively to 115 the flexed portions 26 of the band knife 22. w The gages 162 are normally positioned immediately forward of and just above the cutting edge 166 of the knife 22 (Fig. 6) and extend along the cutting edge 166 at opposite sides of the holddown 118 and are constructed and arranged to be progressively engaged by the inturned marginal portions 30 on the breast of the heel prior to the progressive engagement of the knife with corresponding portions of the inturned marginal portions of the cover for guiding the heel past the knife and for regulating the depth of the beveling out as the heel is moved past the knife to perform the beveling operation.
Each of the gages 162 is supported by one of 130 gaQO the carriers 150 and is mounted for adjustment relatively to the carrier 150 and to the knife 22 by mechanism which will now be described. The outer offset end 168 (Fig. 2) of each of gages 162 is secured in a block 170 carried at the lower end of a rod 172, the gage 162 being adjusted heightwise of the knife 22by turning a knurled nut 176 which is in threaded relation with a threaded portion 178 of the rod 172 and is positioned between ears 180 of a lug 182 having recesses through which the threaded portion 178 of the rod 172 passes. After adjustment has been effected, the rod 172 may be conveniently locked in position relatively to the lug 1.82 bya set screw 184. In order to adjust the gage 162 in the plane of as well as widthwise of the knife 22, the lug 182 is provided with a dove-tailed extension 186 which is shaped to slide in a dove-tailed guideway in the carrier 150. 150 and to the knife 22 is effected by turning a screw 188 (Fig. 3) in threaded relation with a threaded portion 190 of the carrier 150 and having a head provided with a circumferential recess 194 into which a forwardly extending arm 196 of the lug 182 extends. This adjustment is maintained by set screw 198 (Fig. 2) carried by the carrier 150 and the lower end of which is adapted to engage the screw 188 to prevent the same from turning.
The gages 164 for centering the breast of the heel relatively to the knife 22, and which may be used advantageously when the opposite inturned marginal portions 30 of the cover are trimmed simultaneously, are movable toward and away from each other and are positioned at equal distances from the holddown 118, each of the gages 164 being mounted to move in a path along an adjacent portion of the flexed portion 26 of the knife. The side gages 164 are normally held apart but may be moved toward each other by the operation of a treaclle 200 (Fig; 1) through mechanism which will now be described. Each of the side gages 164 forms part of an L- shaped arm 202 (Fig. 3) having a slot 204 (Fig. 2) in its laterally extending sides 206 for, receiving a bearing portion 208 (Fig. 3) of the carrier 150, the L-shaped arm 202 being held in sliding relation with the carrier 150 by a pair of screws 210 in threaded relation with the carrier 150 and having disks 212 which engage the surface 214 of the L-shaped arm 202 and are wider than the slot 204 and which serve to retain the arm 202 in sliding relation with the carrier 150. Each of the L-shaped arms 202 is provided with a depending lug 216 (Fig. 2) to which is secured a rearwardly extending pin 218 (Figs. 2 and 3) constructed and arranged to be received by a slot 220 in a plate 222 pivoted at 224 to the main frame 20. In order to rotate each of the plates 222 about the pivot 224 for moving the side gages 164 toward or away from each other, the lower converging portions of each of the plates is provided with a slot 226, the slots being arranged in overlapping relation for receiving a pin 228 secured to a sliding block 230 and having an enlarged head 232 for retaining the plates 222 in their proper overlapping relation relatively to the block 230 so that the plates will ride over each other as the block 230 is guided for movement in a vertical path along a T-shaped guideway 2S4 constructed and arranged to receive a complemental T-shaped carrier 236, which may be integral with the block 230. The lower end of the T-shaped carrier 236 is pivoted to one end of a bell-crank lever 238 mounted for angular movement about a pin 240 carried by the frame and having its other end pivotally connected to 21. depending rod 242 operated by the thrcadle 200. The rod 242 is normally held in raised position by a spring 244, one end of which is attached to the rod 242 and the other end of whichis attached to the frame 20 thereby causing the side gages 164, through mechanism just described, to be urged apart until the inner ends 246 of the slots 204 engage with the bearing portions 208. When it is desired positively to centralize the breast of the heel relatively to the flexed portion 26 of the band knife 22, the operator steps on the treadle 200 and moves the gages toward each other effectively to centralize the breast of the heel to the flexed portion 26 of the knife. Since a gage 162 and its corresponding gage 164 at one side of the holddown 118 are mounted upon one of the carriers 150, both these gages may be adjusted as a unit to follow corresponding flexed portions of the knife 22 after the holddown 118 has been raised or lowered to change the convexity of the knife according to the shapes of the surfaces upon which the cover to be beveled has been laid. Usually the convexity of the flexed portion of the knife is such that it has a slightly smaller radius of curvature than that of a concavity of the breast of a heel.
In the manufacture of shoes having Louis heels, it is often the practice for the heels to come from the wood heel factory with the side cover 34 and the top lift 248 (Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive) applied to the heel, the breast face 250 of the top lift extending a substantial distance beyond the breast of the heel and being trimmed to conform to the curvature of the breast of the heel after the breast flap has been laid upon the heel. In simultaneously beveling the lower portions of the inturned margins 30 of the cover upon the breast of the heel as illustrated (Fig. 7), the gages 162 come in contact with the upper face 252 of the top lift which extends beyond the breast of the heel with the result that the knife 22 does not quite bevel the inturned margins of the cover up to the upper face 252 of the top lift. In order therefore to provide for beveling a small portion of the inturned marginal portion of the coveradjacent to the face 252 of the top lift 248, provision is made for sliding the knife for a short distance relatively to the gage 162 and the holddown 118 in a path substantially at right angles to the cutting edge 166 in order that the cutting edge 166 may move along the breast to a position slightly to the rear of a projection of the gage on the knife (Fig. '7). This is effected through a lever 254 pivoted for movement about a pin 256 carried by the L-shaped arm 202 of the right portion of the head and comprising a thimble 258 constructed and arranged to engage the blunt edge 260 of the knife when swung in a direction indicated by the arrow 262 by the operator as i1- lustrated in Fig. '7. The knife 22 is so supported that lateral displacement of the knife is easily carried out and when pressure of the thimble is released the knife moves widthwise thereof back to its original position. In order, however, to provide for the lever moving back to its normal position away from the knife (Figs. 5 and 8) the pin 256 carries a spring 264, one end of which is curled about a stud 266 upon the L-shaped arm 202 and the other end of which is curled about a stud 268 upon the lever 254, the tension of the spring being so regulated that when the operator releases the lever, the lever will assume its normal position.
While the illustrated machine has been described with reference to its operating on the in turned marginal portions upon the breasts of heels, it is clear that this machine is useful in beveling covers on the surfaces of heels and on other shoe parts, for example the machine may be equipped as illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 for beve1 ing the inturned marginal portions 32 of the side cover upon the attaching face 38 of a heel. In such a construction the holddown 118 is replaced by an offset holddown 270 and the left roll '76 is replaced by a roll 2'71 the diameter of which is larger than the diameter of the roll 76 and cooperates with the holddown 2'70 to form a flexed portion 2'72 of the knife. When operating upon the inturned marginal portions upon the attaching faces of the heels, the left side gage 164 is removed and the left gage 162 is so adjusted that it is positioned beneath the knife and serves to protect the portion of the rim of the attaching face of the heel not being operated upon from moving against the cutting edge 166 of the knife. In order to perform the beveling operation, the heel is positioned relatively to the flexed portion 272 of the knife while the attaching face 38 and the side or the rear portion of the heel are in engagement with the gage 152 and the gage 164 respectively, the heel being turned in a direction indicated by arrow 274 (Fig. 10) past the flexed portion 272 of the knife to bevel the inturned marginal portion 38 of the cover.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A trimming machine having, in combination, a curved cutting blade and a gage positioned adjacent to said blade, said blade being constructed and arranged to skive to a feather edge a margin of a cover which has been secured to a concave face of a heel as the gage progressively engages the cover margin before corresponding portions of the cover margin are progressively engaged by the cutting blade to guide the heel past the blade.
2. A machine for operating upon one of two superimposed shoe parts having, in combination,
a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge, and a gage positioned adjacent to the cutting edge and constructed and arranged progressively to engage one of the shoe parts before corresponding portions of that shoe part are progressively engaged by the cutter as the shoe part is moved past the cutting edge to bevel said shoe part.
3. A machine for operating upon the inturned marginal portions of a heel cover laid upon a face of a shoe part having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge, and gages positioned adjacent to the cutting edge and constructed and arranged progressively to engage the inturned marginal portions of the cover upon the shoe part before corresponding portions of said marginal portion are engaged (by the cutter as the shoe part is moved past the cutter for beveling the inturned marginal portions of the cover.
4. A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover laid upon a face of a heel having, in combination, a cutter for beveling the inturned marginal portion of the cover as the heel and the cutter are moved relatively to each other, and a gage positioned adjacent to the cutter and constructed and arranged progressively to engage said inturned marginal portion of the cover before corresponding portions of said marginal portion are progressively engaged by the cutter during the beveling operation, thereby positioning the heel relatively to the cutter during the beveling of the marginal portion of the cover.
5. A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover laid upon a face of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge for reducing the thickness of the inturned marginal portion of the cover as the heel is moved past the cutter, and a gage so positioned with reference to the cutter as to be progressively engaged by the marginal portion of the cover in advance of the cutter during the reducing of the thickness of the cover for guiding the heel past the cutter and for controlling the depth of the trimming cut.
6. A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover laid upon the breast of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge for beveling the inturned marginal portion of the cover as the heel is moved past the cutter, and a gage so positioned with reference to the cutter as to be progressively engaged by the marginal portion of the cover immediately in advance of the cutter during the beveling operation for guiding the heel past the cutter to control the depth of the beveling cut.
A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover laid upon the breast of a heel having in combination, a band knife, means for flexing the band knife to form a portion thereof for beveling the inturned marginal portion of the cover upon the breast as the heel is moved past the knife, and a gage so positioned with reference to the cutter as to be progressively engaged by the marginal portion of the cover in advance of the cutter during the beveling operation for guiding the heel past the cutter to control the depth of the bevelingcut.
8. A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover laid upon a face of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge for beveling the inturned marginal portion of the cover, and a gage so positioned with reference to the cutter as to be progressively engaged by the breast of the heel prior to the progressive engage ment of the cutter with corresponding portions of the breast of the heel for guiding the heel past the cutter to control the depth of the beveling cut as the heel is moved past the cutter to perform the beveling operation.
9. A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover laid upon the breast of a heel having, in combination, a band knife,'means for flexing the band knife to form a portion thereof for beveling the inturned marginal portion of the cover upon the heel, and a gage so vpositioned'with reference to the knife as to be progressively engaged'by the breast of the heel prior to the progressive engagement of the knife with corresponding portions of the inturned marginal portion of the cover for guiding the heel past the cutter to control the depth of the beveling 120 out as the heel is moved past the cutter to perform the trimming operation.
10. A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover laid upon the breast of a heel having, in combination, a band 125 knife, means constructed and arranged to engage opposite sides of the knife to flex a portion of the knife for beveling the inturned marginal cover of the heel on the breast of the heel as the heel is moved past the knife, and a gage so positioned 130 with relerence to the knife as to be progressively engaged by portions of said inturned marginal portion of the cover prior to the progressive engagement of the knife with corresponding portions of the inturned marginal portion of the cover for guiding the heel past the'cutter to control the depth of the beveling cut as the heel is moved past the knife.
11. A trimming machine having, in combination, means for reducing the thickness of a portion of one shoe part laid upon another shoe part, means constructed and arranged to engage a surface of one of the shoe parts, and means positively to centralize said surface relatively to the first-named means as the shoe parts and the first named means are moved relatively to each other to reduce the thickness of one of the shoe parts.
12. A trimming machine having, in combination, means for reducing the thickness of a portion of a cover laid upon a shoe part, means 0011- structed and arranged to engage a surface of the shoe part, and means positively to centralize said surface of the shoe part relatively to the firstnamed means as the shoe part and the firstnamed means are moved relatively to each other to reduce the thickness of the cover.
13. A machine for operating on a heel cover laid upon a face of a heel having, in combination, means for reducing the thickness of said cover, means for engaging said face of the heel, and means positively to centralize the face of the heel relatively to the first-named means as the heel and the first-named means are moved relatively to each other to reduce the thickness of said cover.
14. A machine for operating on a cover laid upon a face of a heel having, in combination, a cutter for beveling the cover, means for engaging said face of the heel, means for engaging opposed surfaces of the heel, said means being constructed and arranged to position the heel relatively to the cutter as the heel and the cutter are moved relatively to each other to bevel a portion .of the cover, and means for operating the cutter.
15. A machine for operating on the inturned marginal portions of a heel cover laid upon a face of a heel having, in combination, a cutter for Ibeveling said marginal portions, means for encutter as the heel and the cutter are moved relatively to each other to bevel said marginal portions of the cover, and means for operating the cutter.
16. A machine for operating upon a cover laid upon a face of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge for beveling said cover, means for engaging the face of the heel, means to centralize positively the face of the heel relatively to the cutter, said means being constructed and arranged to position the heel relatively to the cutter as the heel and the cutter are moved relatively to each other to bevel the cover, and means for operating the cutter.

'A machine for operating upon the inturned marginal portions of a cover applied to the breast of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge for beveling said marginal portions of the heel cover, means for engaging the breast of the heel, means for engaging the sides of the heel, said means being constructed and arranged to position the heel relatively to the cutter as the heel and the cutter are moved relatively to each other to bevel said marginal portions of the cover, and
means for operating the cutter.
18. A machine for operating upon the inturned marginal portions of a heel cover applied to the breast of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge for beveling said marginal portions of the heel cover, gages for engaging the lateral portions of the breast of the heel, gages for engaging the sides of the heel, said gages being constructed and arranged to position the heel relatively to the cutter as the heel and the cutter are moved relatively to each other to bevel said marginal portions of the cover, and means for operating the cutter.
19. A machine for operating upon a cover applied to the breast of a heel having, in combination, a flexible cutter, means for flexing a portion of the cutter, gages for engaging the breast of the heel, gages for engaging the sides of the heel, said gages being constructed and arranged to position the heel relatively to the cutter as the heel and the cutter are moved relatively to each other to bevel portions of the cover, and
means for operating the cutter.

A machine for operating upon the inturned marginal portions of a heel cover applied to the breast of a heel having, in combination, a cutter for beveling said marginal portions of the cover, a gage for engaging the breast of a heel, gages mounted for movement toward and away from each other and constructed and arranged to engage the sides of the heel, said gages being constructed and arranged to position the heel rela tively to the cutter as the heel and the cutter are moved relatively to each other to bevel said marginal portions, and means for operating the cutter.

A machine for operating upon the inturned marginal portions of a heel cover applied to the breast or" a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge for beveling said marginal portions of the heel cover, gages for engaging the lateral portions of the breast of the heel for regulating the depth of the beveling cut as the heel is moved past the cutter, and means for operating the cutter.
22. A machine for operating upon the inturned marginal portions of a heel cover applied to the breast of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge for beveling said marginal portions of the heel cover, gages for engaging the lateral portions of the breast of the heel for regulating the depth of the beveling cut as the heel is moved past the cutter, gages mounted for movement toward and away from each other and constructed and arranged to engage the sides of the heel for centralizing the breast of the heel relatively to the cutter during the beveling operation, and means for operating the cutter.
23. A machine for operating upon the inturned marginal portions of a heel cover laid upon the breast of a heel having, in combination, a flexible utter, means for flexing a portion of the cutter, a gage for engaging the breast of the heel, gages mounted for movement toward and away from each other and constructed and arranged to position the heel relatively to the cutter as the heel and the cutter are moved relatively to each other to bevel said marginal portions, and means for operating the cutter.
24. A machine for trimming the inturned marginal portion of a heel cover laid upon the breast of a heel having, in combination, a band knife, guides for engaging one side of the knife, a holddown positioned between the guides and constructed and arranged to engage the opposite side of the knife, a gage positioned adjacent to the holddown and upon the same side of the knife as the holddown and ahead of the cutting edge of the knife constructed and arranged to engage the inturned portion of the breast of the heel as the heel is moved past the knife to bevel'the inturned marginal portion of the cover upon the breast of the heel, and means for operating the knife.
25. A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover laid upon a face of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge to bevel a portion of the inturned marginal portion of the cover, a gage positioned to be progressively engaged by the breast of the heel prior to the progressive engagement of the cutter with corresponding portions of the breast of the heel for guiding the heel past the cutter and for regulating the depth of the beveling cut, means for moving the cutter lengthwise of its cutting edge, and means for moving the cutter relatively to the gage in a path substantially normal to the cutting edge of the knife for beveling another portion of the inturned marginal portion of the cover.
26. A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover laid upon the breast of a heel having, in combination, a band knife, means for flexing the band knife to form a part thereof for beveling a portion of an inturned marginal portion of the cover upon the breast as the heel is moved past the knife, a gage positioned to'be progressively engaged by the marginal portion of the cover in advance of the cutter during the beveling operation for guiding the heel past the cutter and for regulating the depth of the beveling cut, means for operating the band knife, and means for moving the band knife relatively to the gage in a path substantially normal to the cutting edge of the cutter for beveling another portion of said marginal portion of the cover.
27. A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover laid upon a face of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge, means for flexing the cutter to form a flexed portion thereof to which work may be presented, means for positioning the inturned marginal portion of the heel cover relatively to the cutter,
'means for operating the cutter lengthwise of its cutting edge, and means for moving the cutter in a path disposed at an angle to its lengthwise movement for beveling portions of the inturned margin of the cover.
28. A machine for operating upon inturned marginal portions of a heel cover applied to the breast of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge for beveling portions of said marginal por- 1 tions of the heel cover, means for engaging the breast of the heel for positioning the heel relatively to the cutter as the heel and the cutter are moved relatively to each other for beveling said marginal portions, and means for moving the cutter in a path substantially normal to its lengthwise movement for beveling other portions of the inturned marginal portions of the cover.
29. A machine for operating upon inturned marginal portions of a heel cover laid upon the breast of the heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge for beveling portions of said marginal portions of the heel cover, gages for engaging the lateral portions of the breast of the heel, gages for engaging sides of the heel, said gages being constructed and arranged to posi tion the heel relatively to the cutter as the heel is moved past the cutter to bevel said marginal portions, and a member for engaging the cutter for moving the same in a path substantially normal to the cutting edge of the knife for beveling other portions of said inturned marginal portions of the cover while the heel is held stationary.
30. A trimming machine having, in combination, a band knife, members engaging a portion of the knife to form a flexed portion thereof to which a heel having the marginal portions of its cover inturned upon its breast may be presented, gages for positioning the heel relatively to theflexed portion of the knife as the heel is moved past said flexed portion of the knife to bevel portions of said marginal portion of the cover, means for operating the knife lengthwise of itself, and a member for engaging the knife for moving the same relatively to the gages in a path substantially normal to the cutting edge of the knife for beveling other portions of the inturned marginal portions of the cover.
31. A machine for operating upon inturned marginal portionsof a heel cover applied to the breast of a heel having, in combination, a band knife, knife guides for engaging one side of the band knife, a holddown member positioned between the guides and engaging the opposite side of the knife and mounted to co-operate with said guide to flex a portion of the knife,gages positioned at opposite sides of the holddown and upon the same side of the knife as the holddown and ahead of the cutting edge of the knife constructed and arranged to engage the marginal inturned portions of the cover upon the breast of the heel as the heel is moved past the knife to bevel portions of said marginal portions of the heel cover, gages constructed and arranged to engage the sides of the heel for positioning the breast of the heel laterally thereof relatively to the flexed portion of the knife during the beveling operation, means for operating the band knife, and means for moving the knife relatively to the gages in a path substantially normal to its cutting edge for beveling portions of the inturnedmarginal portions of the cover adjacent to the top-liftreceiving face of the heel,

A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover laid upon the face of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge for reducing the thickness of the inturned marginal portion of the cover as the heel is moved past the cutter, and a gage positioned to be progressively engaged by the marginal portion of the cover in advance of the cutter during the reducing of the thickness of the cover for guiding the heel past the cutter and for controlling the depth of the beveling out, said gage being adjustable relatively to the cutter to vary the amount of material trimmed from the cover during the cover-reducing operation.

A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover laid upon a 1253 face of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge for beveling the inturned marginal portion of the cover, and a gage positioned to be progressively engaged by the breast of the heel prior to the progressive engagement of the cutter with corresponding portions of the heel for guiding the heel past the cutter and for regulating the depth of the beveling cut as the cutter and the heel are moved relatively to each other to perform the beveling operation, said gage being mounted for adjustment heightwise and widthwise of the knife to vary the depth of the beveling cut.

A machine for operating upon a cover applied to the breast of a heel having, in combination, a flexible cutter, means for flexing a portion of the cutter, a gage for engaging the breast of the heel, gages mountedfor adjustment toward and away from each other and normally held away from each other constructed and arranged to engage the sides of the heel, said gages being constructed and arranged to position the heel relatively to the cutter as the heel and the cutter are moved relatively to each other to bevel portions of the cover, and means for operating the cutter.
37. A machine for operating upon the inturned marginal portions of a heel cover applied to the breast of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its to the flexed portion of the knife to control the depth of the beveling out.

A machine for operating upon the inturned marginal portions of a heel cover applied to the breast of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge for beveling said marginal portions of the heel cover, gages constructed and arranged to enage the lateral portions of the breast of the heel to control the depth of the beveling cut as the heel is moved past the cutter and mounted for adjustment relatively to the cutter to vary the depth of the beveling cut, gages mounted for movement toward and away from each other and constructed and arranged to engage the sides of the heel for centralizing the breast of the heel relatively to the cutter during the beveling operation, and means for operating the cutter.

A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover laid upon the face of a heel having, in combination, a band knife, means for varying the curvature of a portion of the band knife to form a portion thereof for beveling the inturned marginal portion of a heel, and a gage positioned to be progressively engaged by the breast of the heel prior to the progressive engagement of the knife with corresponding portions of a heel for guiding the heel past the knife and for regulating the depth of the beveling out, said gage being mounted for movement heightwise and widthwise of the knife to control the depth of the beveling cut and also being mounted for pivotal movement whereby the gage may be caused to extend substantially parallel to the cutting edge of the knife as the curvature of the knife is changed.

A machine for operating upon the inturned marginal portions of a heel cover applied to a face of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge, means for flexing the cutter to form flexed portions of different curvature to which the heel may be presented for beveling said inturned marginal portions of its cover, a carrier, and a gage mounted upon the carrier and constructed and arranged to engage the face of the heel for regulating the depth of the beveling out, said carrier being mounted for pivotal movement to adjust the gage substantially parallel with the flexed portion of the cutter.
41. A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover applied to a face of a heel having, in combination, a cutter mounted for movement lengthwise of its cutting edge, means for flexing the cutter to form flexed portions thereof of different curvature to which the heel may be presented for beveling said inturned marginal portion of its cover, a carrier, and a gage mounted upon and adjustable relatively to the carrier and constructed and arranged to engage said face of the heel for regulating the depth of the beveling out, said carrier being mounted for pivotal adjustment to position the gage substantially parallel with the flexed portion of the cutter to correspond to changes in the curvature of the knife.
42. A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover applied to a face of a heel having, in combination, a band knife, means for flexing a portion of the knife to form flexed portions of different curvature to which a heel may be presented for beveling said inturned marginal portions of its cover, a carrier, a gage mounted upon the carrier and constructed and arranged to engage the face of the heel for regulating the depth of the beveling cut, and another gage mounted upon the carrier for centralizing said face relatively to the flexed portion of the knife, said carrier being mounted for pivotal adjustment relatively to the knife for positioning the gages as a unit relatively to the flexed portion of the knife after the curvature of the flexed portion of the knife has been changed.
43. A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover applied to a face of a heel having, in combination, a band knife, means for flexing a portion of the knife to form flexed portions thereof of different curvature to which a heel may be presented for beveling said inturned marginal portions of its cover, a carrier, a gage mounted upon the carrier and constructed and arranged to engage the face of the heel for regulating the depth of the beveling cut, and another gage mounted upon and also mounted for movement relative to the carrier constructed and arranged to centralize said face with 140 relation to the flexed portion of the knife, said carrier also being mounted for pivotal adjustment relatively to the knife for positioning the gages as a unit relatively to the flexed portion of the knife to correspond to changes in the curva- 5.

A machine for operating upon an inturned portion of a heel cover applied to the breast of a heel having, in combination, a band knife, guides engaging one side of the band knife, a holddown 15g positioned between the guides and arranged to engage the opposite side of the band knife and constructed and arranged to cooperate with the guides to flex a portion of the knife to which the heel may be presented for beveling said inturned portion of the cover, and gages positioned adja cent to the band knife at opposite sides of the holddown and constructed and arranged to regulate the depth of the beveling out, each of the gages being mounted for pivotal movement for adjusting the gage to a position adjacent to the knife.

A machine for operating upon an inturned portion of a heel cover applied to the breast of a heel having, in combination, a band knife, guides engaging one side of the band knife, a holddown positioned between the guides and arranged to engage the opposite side of the band knife and constructed and arranged to cooperate with the guides to flex a portion of the knife to which the heel may be presented for beveling said inturned portion of the cover, gages positioned adjacent to the flexed portion of the cutter at opposite sides of the holddown constructed and arranged to regulate the depth of the beveling cut, and other gages positioned at opposite sides of the holddown for centralizing the heel relatively to the flexed portion of the knife, the gages positioned at each side of the holddown being mounted for pivotal adjustment relatively to the knife for positioning the gages as a unit relatively to the flexed portion of the knife.

A machine for operating upon an inturned marginal portion of a heel cover applied to a face of a heel having, in combination, a band knife, means for flexing the knife to form a flexed cutting edge the curvature of which may be varied and to which a heel may be presented for beveling said inturned marginal portion of its cover, a pair of carriers, a pair of gages, one mounted upon each of the carriers, constructed and arranged to engage the face of the heel for regulating the depth of the beveling cut, and other gages one mounted upon each of the carriers, guided for movement with reference to the respective carriers and constructed and arranged to centralize the breast of the heel relatively to the flexed portion of the knife, each of said carriers being mounted for pivotal adjustment relatively to the knife for positioning the gages mounted thereon as a unit relatively to the flexed portion of the knife when the curvature of the knife is changed.

A machine for operating upon inturned portions of a heel cover applied to the breast of a heel having, in combination, a band knife, guides engaging one side of the band knife, a holddown positioned between the guides and arranged to engage the opposite side of the band knife and constructed and arranged to cooperate with the guides to flex a portion of the knife to which the heel may be presented for beveling said inturned marginal portions of the heel cover, a pair of carriers, one positioned at each side of the holddown, a pair of gages, one mounted upon each of the carriers, constructed and arranged to engage a lateral portion of the breast of the heel for controlling the depth of the beveling out, and another pair of gages, one mounted upon each of the carriers, guided for movement relatively to the respective carriers and constructed and arranged to centralize the breast of the heel relatively to the flexed portion of the knife, each of the said carriers being mounted for pivotal adjustment relatively to the knife for positioning the heel breast engaging gage and the centralizing gage mounted thereon as a unit relatively to the flexed portion of the knife.

A trimming machine having, in combination, a cutter movable lengthwise of itself, means for flexing a portion of the cutter, and gages positioned at opposite sides of the cutter and constructed and arranged to guide superimposed shoe parts past the flexed portion of the cutter to skive one of said parts.

A trimming machine having, in combination, a band knife, members constructed and arranged to en age opposite sides of the knife to flex a portion thereof, and gages positioned at opposite sides of the band knife and constructed and arranged to engage the breast and a side of a heel the marginal portions of the side cover of which have been inturned upon the breast of the heel to guide the heel past the flexed portion of the cutter thereby to skive the inturned marginal portions of the cover.

A trimming machine having, in combination, a band knife, members constructed and arranged to flex 2, portion of the knife, a pair of gages positioned at one side of and ahead of the flexed portion of the knife, and a pair of gages positioned at the opposite side of said portion of the knife, said gages being constructed and arranged to guide a heel the marginal portions of the side cover of which have been laid upon the breast of the heel past the flexed portion of the knife to skive the marginal portions of the cover.

A trimming machine having, in combination, a band knife, rollers constructed and arranged to engage one side of the knife, a holddown positioned between the rollers and shaped to engage the opposite side of the knife to cooperate with the rollers in flexing a portion of the knife to form a curved portion of the knife to which work may be presented, and a scraper positioned adjacent to the curved portion of the knife and constructed and arranged to receive the knife and to clean the same upon movement of the knife through the scraper.
52, A trimming machine having, in combination, a band knife, rollers spaced from each other and constructed and arranged to engage one side of the knife, a holddown positioned between said rollers and constructed and arranged to engage the opposite side of the knife, a gage positioned upon the same side of the knife as the holddown and in front of the cutting edge of the cutter, said gage being constructed and arranged to engage the breast of a heel the mar ginal portions of the side cover of which have been inturned upon the breast of the heel, and gages positioned at the opposite side of the knife from the holddown and constructed and arranged to engage the sides of the heel, said gages being constructed and arranged to guide the heel past the flexed portion of the cutter for skiving the inturned marginal portions of the cover upon the breast of the heel.
53. In a machine for skiving covers applied to heels, a flexible cutter having an elongated cutting edge, and a gage extending lengthwise of the cutting edge and positioned at one side and immediately ahead of the cutting edge.
54. In a machine for skiving covers laid upon the cutting edge, and a gage positioned at the opposite side of the cutting edge and having a heel engaging face disposed at an angle to the face of the other gage.
55. In a machine for skiving covers laid upon heels, a flexible cutter having an elongated lengthwise-movable cutting edge, and a gage extending lengthwise of the cutting edge nd positioned adjacent to one side and immediately ahead of the cutting edge.
56. In a machine for skiving covers laid upon heels, a band knife, a gage extending lengthwise of the cutting edge of the knife and positioned at one side and immediately ahead of the cutting edge of the knife, said gage being adjustable heightwise and widthwise of the knife.

In a machine for skiving covers laid upon heels, a band knife, spaced guides arranged to engage one side of the band knife, a holddown located between said guides arranged to engage the opposite side of the knife and cooperating with the guides to flex a portion of the knife, and a gage having a heel engaging surface extending lengthwise of the cutting edge of the knife and positioned at one side and immediately ahead of the cutting edge of the knife.
58. A machine for trimming covers applied to heels having, in combination, a flexible cutter, means to flex the cutter thereby curving the cutting portion thereof, gages to position a heel to which a cover has been applied relatively to the curved cutting portion of the cutter, and means to move the cutter widthwise of itself to slzive portions of the cover applied to the heel.
59. A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible cutter movable lengthwise of its cutting edge, a gage having a heel engaging face positioned at one side and immediately in front of the cutting edge of the cutter, and means to move the cutter widthwise of its cutting edge to a position in front of the gage.

A trimming machine having, in combination, a band knife, a gage having a face con structed and arranged to engage a heel upon which a cover has been laid, said face being positioned at one side of and ahead of the cutting edge of the knife, a lever constructed and arranged to engage the knife to move the same widthwise of the knife and ahead of the heel engaging face, and resilient means to return the lever to its original position thereby permitting the knife to return to a position rearwardly of the heel engaging face of the gage.

A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible cutter movable lengthwise of its cutting edge, a gage to engage the inturned marginal portion of aside cover laid upon the attaching face of a heel, and a gage to engage the rim of the heel, said gages being positioned at opposite sides of the cutter to guide the heel past the cutter as its inturned marginal portion is skived.

A trimming machine having, in combina tion, a flexible cutter movable lengthwise of its cutting edge, a gage to engage the inturned marginal portion of a side cover laid upon the attaching face of a heel, a gage to engage the rim of the heel, said gages being positioned at opposite sides of the cutter to guide the heel past the cutter as inturned marginal portion is skived, and a guard constructed and arranged to engage the rim to insure that other portions of the cover than those being operated upon will not be accidentally moved against the cutter.
63. A trimming machine comprising a flexible band-knife arranged to run on cooperative pulleys one of which is driven, work-guiding means argage to facilitate presentation of the heel to the T.
knife, said gage being located adjacent to the knife in position to engage the margin of the cover progressively in advance of the knife to guide the heel past the knife.
