By adjustment of the stop screw 106 the outer limit of adjustment of the lower gage member may be finely determined.

This invention relates to trimming machines and is herein illustrated as embodied in a machine for skiving or beveling heel cover margins which project beyond the edges 5 of heels to which the covers have been applied.
In covering a heel, such for example as a wooden Louis heel, a cover blank is employed which is initially shaped to cover the curved rear and side surfaces of the heel and to allow surplus material at the margins of the blank for overlapping the breast face and the top and bottom faces of the heel. In attaching the heel to a shoe a coating of an adhesive such as cement is applied, either to the heel seat ofthe shoe or to the partially covered top or seat face of the heel, and this adhesive is relied upon to a substantial extent to hold the heel in place. -When leather covers are employed the covers are applied to the heels with the finished surface at the grain side of the leather outermost and, inasmuch as cement will not adhere firmly to a smooth surface of this character, it has been customary to prepare leather covered heels for attachment to shoes by skiving the outer sides of the cover margins which overlie the seat faces of the heels, thus removing the glossy finished surface and exposing in place thereof the ac rougher fleshy portion of the leather to receive the cement. Another reason for skiving the cover margin at the seat face is to facilitate the securing of the desired close fit or tight joint between the shoe upper and the rim or upper edge of the heel. Furthermore, it is desirable and often the practice to bevel or skive to a feather edge each of the inturned cover margins which overlie the breast face of'the heel to enablethe sole flap, which is to cover the heel breast, to be laid smoothly in place, and also to secure better adhesion between the breast covering flap and the heel. This skiving or trimming of the cover margins, both at the. seat face and at the breast face of the heel, has been done heretofore only by hand and the operations have been laborious as well as slow and expensive. In view of the foregoing, one object of the present invention is toprovide a machine for trimming the margins of heel covers after the covers have been applied to the rear and side surfaces of the heels but before the cover margins have been turned inwardly and cemented in place upon the top, bottom and breast faces of the heels.
To the accomplishment ofthis object, one feature of the invention consists in the pro vision, in a heel cover trimming machine, of means for trimming a cover margin which projects beyond the edge of a heel face to which the cover has been a )plied, and means constructed and arranged to engage both the covered face and another face of the heel to position the heel relatively to the trimming means to determine the location of the trimming out. As herein illustrated the trimming means comprises an oscillatory cho ping knife arranged to 00101381 21116 with a cu t, ting block to trim a cover margin which is in: terposed between the knife and the blockand which is fed past the knife by manipulation of the heel by the-operator. The illustrated heel positioning means comprises upper and lower gage members between which the projecting cover-margin extends, and across which the heel is fed, the gage members comprising angularly disposed work engaging surfaces arranged to engage the two surfaces of the heel that meet at the edge over which the cover margin is to be turned, and thus to position the heel both horizontally and vertically with respect to the knife and cutting block so as to determine the location of the cut made by the knife.
Also, as shown in the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the trimming knife is movable in a path oblique to the work engaging surface of the cutting block so as to bevel the cover margins to a feather edge, and provision. is made for varying both the angle of bevel of the trimmed edges and the width of the cover margins or portions projecting .be- U -yond the edges of the heels.
Inasmuch as the trimming operation is performed shortly after the covers have been applied to the heels, the adhesive on the cover margins is still fresh and sticky. The illustrated cutting block is arranged to engage the cement-coated sides of the cover margins and in order that the cover margins shall not adhere to the cutting block in such a manner as to retard or interfere with the feeding of the heel across the surfaces of the gage members, provision is made for repeatedly breaking the adhesion between the cutting block and the coated cover margin which rests upon it.
To accomplish this result, the cutting block of the illustrated machine, in accordance with another feature of the invention, is oscillated so that it is alternately moved into and out of position for co-operating with the trimming knife, and means is provided for supporting the cover margin and stripping it from the cutting block on the retracting stroke of the latter, so as to leave the heel free to be fed to advance the cover margin into position to be again cut on the next stroke of the knife.
More or less cement is likely to adhere to the trimming knife and in order to offset any tendency of the knife to lift the cover away from the side of the heel the upper gage member of the illustrated machine is arranged to engage the cover at a point very close to the heel edge and means is also provided for stripping the projecting margin of the cover from the trimming knife if it should stick to the knife on the non-cutting stroke of the latter.
The invention further consists in features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed, the advantages of which will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
The invention will be explained with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a View in side elevation of the machine;
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the machine;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary View, partially in side elevation and partially in section, and on an enlarged scale, showing the operating instrumentalities of the machine and illustrating their mode of operation in trimming the cover margin which projects beyond the seat face of a heel;

Referring to the drawings, the operating instrumentalities of the machine comprise an oscillatory trimming knife 12 and an oscillatory cutting block or anvil 14 with which the knife co-operates to trim a heel cover margin, the knife moving through a path so disposed with respect to the surface of the cutting block as to bevel the cover margin to a feather edge. The machine is adapted to operate upon a heel cover blank which has been cemented to the curved rear and side faces of a heel with the m argins of the blank projecting beyond the edges of the heel, and in order that the heel may be supported and guided with the projecting cover margin interposed between the knife and the cutting block and properly positioned relatively to the knife to insure the trimming of the cover margins to a desired predetermined width, upper and lower gage members 16 and 18, respectively, are arranged to engage angularly disposed faces of the heel at points closely adjacent to the edges over which the cover margins are to be turned.
The trimming devices 12 and 14 and the gage members 16 and 18 are supported by a hollow frame or casing 20 which is arranged to enclose the operating mechanism and is adapted to rest upon a table or work bench. The casing 20 is provided with a lateral or;- tension 22 (Fig. 2) adapted to support a vertically adjustable table 2a to which is bolted an electric motor 26. The armature shaft 28 of the motor is connected by means of a suitable coupling 30 with a horizontal cam shaft 32 which is ournaled in bearings in the side walls of the casing 20 and to which is rigidly secured a cam disk 34: for oscillating the trimming knife 12 and the cutting block 14:.
The trimming knife 12 consists of an elongated bar which is sharpened at one end and is formed with beveled lateral edge faces 36 arranged to be retained beneath undercut shoulders formed respectively upon a knife carrier 38 and a clamp plate 40 which is secured to the knife carrier by a clamp screw 42. lilii the form of a lever, is pivotally mounted upon a horizontal rod 44 the opposite ends of which are fixed in the side walls of the casing 20, and a rearwardly extending arm 46 of this lever carries a cam roll 48 which is received in a groove 50. in one side of the cam disk 34.
The cutting block or anvil 14 is formed at one end of a tapering arm 52 having a segmental extension 54 adjustably secured by means of a clamp screw 56 to the downwardly curved arm of a lever 58 which is pivotally mounted upon the rod 32 beside the knife carrier lever 38. The segmental extension 54 is slidably adjustable between arcuate ribs 59 on the lever arm 58 which engage the edges of the extension 54. The rearwardly extending arm of the cutting block lever 58 carries a cam roll 60 which'is arranged to travel in a groove 62 formed in the oppositeside of the cam disk 34. The cutting block 14 is formed with a fiat surface 64 (Figs. 5 and 6) for supporting the cover margins against the thrust of the trimming knife, the surface 64 being inclined the better to adapt it to engage the cover margin when the heel is held against the gage members 16 and 18 in positions such as those shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The knife 12 moves through a curved path the center of which is coincident with the axis of the pivot rod 44, and the face 64 of the cutting block is disposed in such angular relation to the path of movement of the knife that the knife will cut through a cover margin resting upon the cutting block in a direction to skive or bevel the margin to a feather edge.
The work engaging .face of the cutting block is raised above the adjacent upper portion of the arm 52 to provide an edge at the lower side of the block with which the knife is adapted to co-operate to insure that the chip cut by the knife will be entirely severed. The arrangement is such that clearance is provided for the knife beyond this edge of the cutting block so that the knife may advance somewhat beyond its cutting position without injury either to the knife or to the cutting block. By loosening the clamp screw 56 the segmental portion of the cutting block arm 52 may be slidably adjusted between the arcuate ribs 59 to regulate the inclination of the face of the cutting block in accordance with the thickness of the heel cover so that a desired width of bevel may be obtained whether the cover is relatively thin or relati vel-y thick.
The upper gage member or work rest 16 is formed with a segmental upper shank portion 68 which is secured by screws 70 to a rigid bracket 72 which projects forwardly from the upper portion of the casing 20, the screw 70 extending through arcuate slots 74 in the segmental portion 68 arranged to permit upward and downward adjustment of the gage member. The sides of the slots 74 are made concentric with the center of .OSQil'. lation of the trimming knife so that adjust: ment of the gage member 16 can not cause it to interfere with the movements of the knife. The lower extremity of the. upper gage mem-v ber 16 is provided with upturned ears 7 6 which are. spaced apart to embrace the shank of the knife 12 to, steady the knife and to serve as strippers for preventing any portion of the projecting cover margin which may stick to the knife from being raised. with the knife on the up strokes of the latter. Inasmuch as the knife is likely to become more or less sticky from the cement on the covermargins, the stripping action of these ears 7 6 is of consider-able importance. The gage member 16 is adapted to engage one side of the heel near the-edge or corner over which the cover margin is to be turned, while the lower gage member 18 has a shoulder 7 8 at its upper extremity which is angularly disposed with respect to the work engaging portion of the upper gage ,member for engaging the uncovered top bottom or breast face of the heel and this shoulder cooperates with the lower extremity of the upper gage member to. support and position the heel while the cover margin is being trimmed.
The lower gage member 18 is slotted, as indicated at in Fig. 7 to receive the arm 52 which carries the cutting block, the wing portions of the gage member 18 at opposite sides of the slot 80 embracing the arm 52 so as to steady the cutting block. The upper edges of the slotted portion of the lower gage member 18 are shaped to engage and support the margins of the cover at opposite sides of the cutting block. As the downward swinging movement of the cutting block 1ever 58 lowers the cutting block between each cutting stroke of the knife, the upper edge portions of the lower gage member 18 serve to strip the adhesive coated surface of the cover i'nargin from the cutting block. Thus any adhesion between the coated cover margin and the cutting block is periodically broken to avoid unnecessary interference with the feeding of the heel. I
It is often desirable that the cover margins which are to be laid against the breast face shall be relatively narrow while the marginal portions of the cover which are to be laid against the top and bottom faces of the heel shall be relatively wide. To. facilitate the tr mming of the cover margins to different widths at different parts of the heel the lower gage member 18 is mounted for adjustment 1nto two different positions relatively to the cutting block and the knife while the machine 1S1I1 operation. To this end the lower gage member 18 is formed at the upper end ofa' rectangular slide bar 82 (Fig. '1 which is mounted in an inclined gu-ideway in th e 'casing 20, a cover plate 84 being secured to the sides of the'guid-eway to hold the slide bar therein. A pin 86 projects from the casing 20 into a longitudinal slot 88 in the slide bar 82 and a spring 90, which is located in the slot 88 between the pin 86 and a shoulder at the lower end of the slot, tends to maintain the slide bar in its lowermost position with the gage member 18 set close to the cutting block to position the heel for the trimming of a narrow cover margin. The slide bar is adapted to be raised to an upper position to move the gage member 18 away from the cutting block and thus to set the gage member for the trimming of a wider margin, by means of an operator-controlled lever 92, which is pivoted at 9 1 to the casing 20 and has a downwardly extending arm engaging the lower extremity of the slide bar 82. The lever 92 is urged upward by a spring-pressed plunger 96 engaging within a socket in the rearwardly extending arm of the lever and the lever is adapted to be rocked against the action of the spring plunger 06 by means of arod 98 connected with a foot treadle (not shown). A stop screw 100 threaded in a lug 102 on the rear of the casing 20, and adapted to be secured in adjusted position by a lock nut 104, is arranged to engage the long arm of the lever 92 to limit the downward movement of the slide bar 82 and thus to determine the maximum width to which the cover margin may be trimmed. A similar stop screw 106 threaded into the casing 20 and provided with a suitable lock nut 108, by engagement with the lower side of the long arm of the lever 92 limits the upward movement of the slide bar 82 and thus determines the setting of the gage member 18 for the trimming of a cover margin of minimum width.
In operation, to trim the margins which project beyond the breast face of a heel, the heel is positioned as shown in Fig. 4, with the portion of the covered surface at one side of the heel and at a point near the edge of the breast face bearing against the upper gage member 16. with the portion of the breast face near the edge of the latter bearing against the shouldered upper end of the lower gage member 18, and with one end of the projecting cover margin at one side of the breast face extending between the cutting block 14 and the trimming knife 12 and resting with its cemented side upon the cutting block. On each successive downward or cutting stroke of the trimming knife the knife co-operates with the cutting block to trim a small portion of the cover margin. Between the cutting strokes of the knife the work is fed along manually past the co-operating work rests or gage members so as to cause the trimming operation to progress throughout the length of the cover margin. Between successive strokes of the trimming knife also the cutting block is moved downwardly and during these downward movements of the cutting block the cover margin is supported by the rearwardly extending wing portions of the stationary lower gage member 18, with the result that the latter serves to strip the adhesivecoated surface of the cover margin from the cutting block so as to prevent the cutting block from retarding or interfering with the feed of the work. After the cover margin at one side of the heel breast has been trimmed, the heel is turned so that the cover margin at the opposite side of the heel breast may be presented to the trimming knife and trimmed in the manner just described.
The manner in which the heel is presented to the gage members and positioned by them for the trimming of the margin of the cover which projects beyond the top or seat face of a heel is illustrated in Fig. 3. The heel is manipulated or turned so that the trimming operation will progress from the breast corner at one side of the seat face to the breast corner at the other side of the seat face of the heel, during which time the heel is positioned and guided by the lower gage member which engages the rim of the heel around the seat face thereof while covered side and rear faces of the heel are held against the upper gage member. By turning the heel upside down from the position in which it appears in Fig. 3 it will be positioned for the trimming of the cover margin at the bottom or top lift face of the heel.
If it is desired to trim the cover margins so as to provide a wider margin at the top and bottom faces than at the breast face of the heel the treadle connected with the rod 98 may be depressed to raise the lower gage member so that the heel will be held farther away from the line of cutting. It will be noticed that such adjustment of the width of the cover margin (or distance which the cover margin projects beyond the edge of the heel) does not change the width of the beveled portion of the margin. If it is desired to change the width of the beveled portion of the cover margin this may be accomplished by adjust ment of the cutting block arm extension 54 in its curved guideway on the lever 58, such adjustment tilting the cutting block about an axis coincident with the line of cutting engagement of the knife with the cutting block and varying the angle at which the cover margin is supported while being cut. Tilting adjustment of the cutting block may also be effected, in the manner just described, for the purpose of compensating for differences in thickness in different heel covers so as to maintain the width of bevel constant irrespective of variations in the thicknesses of different covers. By adjustment of the ston screw 100 the lower gage member may be located at such a distance from the line of cutting that when positioned for the trimn'iing of a narrow margin the outer edge of the. beveled surface may be made to register with the edge or corner of the face over which the cover margin is to be turned. Such anarrangement may be desirable at the breast face of the heel. If desired also, the adjustment of the stop screw may be made such as to insure that at the heel breast, with the lower gage member set for the trimming of a narrow margin, the outer edge of the beveled portion of the margin will be spaced inwardly on the breast face from the edges of this face sufficiently to allow for shrinkage of the breast covering flap. By adjustment of the stop screw 106 the outer limit of adjustment of the lower gage member may be finely determined.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1-. In a trimming machine, means for supporting and trimming a. flexible heel cover margin which projects beyond the edge of a heel face to which the cover has been applied, and means constructed and arranged to engage simultaneously both the covered face and another face of the heel to position the heel relatively to the trimming means tov determine the location of the trimming cut.
2. In a trimming machine, means for supporting and trimming a flexible heel cover margin which projects beyond one of the edges of a heel to which the cover has been applied, and spaced gage members arranged to engage simultaneously a plurality of angularly related surfaces of the heel to position the heel to determine the location of the trimming cut.
3. In a trimming machine, means for supporting. and trimming a flexible heel cover margin which projects beyond one of the edges of a heel to which the cover has been applied, and means" located at opposite sides of the projecting cover margin for simultaneously engaging the heel to determine the location of the trimmingcut.
l. In a trimming machine, means for trimming a heel cover margin which projects beyond the edge of the breast face of a heel to which the cover has been applied, and means constructed and arranged to engage both the breast and a side face of the heel at points closely adjacent to said edge to position the heel to determine the location of the trimming cut. I
5. In a trimming machine, means fortrimming a heel cover margin which projects beyond one of the edges of a heel to which the cover has been applied, (fie-operating trimming devices between which the projecting cover margin is interposed, a gagemember for engaging a portion of the covered face of the heel, a second gage member for engaging a portion of another face of the heel and co-operating with the first gage member to position the heel to determine the location of the trimming cut, and means for adjusting the second gage member to vary the width to which the margin is to be trimmed.
6.' In a trimming machine, co-operating trimming devices for trimming heel c'over margins which project beyond the edges of a heel to which the cover has been applied, a work rest for engaging the covered side of the heel to position the cover margin between the co-operating trimming devices, and a gage member for spacing said edge of the heel away from the point of engagement of the trimmingdevices with the cover margin to determine the width to which the margin is to be trimmed; I
7.- In a trimming machine, means for trimm-ing a heel cover margin which projects beyond one of the edges of a heel surface to which the cover has been applied, a reciprocating trimming knife, a cutting block movable to and from position to co-o'pe'rate with the knife, means for operating the knifeand the cutting block, means'engaging the heel to locate the cover margin in position to be operated upon by the knife and cutting block, and means for stripping the cover margin from the knife during the movement of the latter away from cutting position;
8. A machine for trimming. a heel cover marginwhich projects beyond one of the cuttingblock arranged to co-operate to trim a a heel cover. margin having an adhesive coated surface in contact with the cutting block, and means for repeatedly breaking the adhesion between the cover margin and the cutting block as the cover margin is fed over the cutting block during the trimming opera tion. 10. In a machine for trimming a heel cover margin which projects beyond one edge of a heel surface to which a cover has been applied, a cutting block having a work engaging face, a reciprocating trimming knife movable in a'path oblique to. the work engaging surface of the cutting block for cooperat ing with the block to'bevel a cover margin which is introduced between the cutting block and the knife, spaced gage members for engaging angularly disposed heel surfaces to locate the cover margin in position t6 be trimmed, and means permitting the angular relation between the work engaging face of the cutting block and the path of the knife to be changed to vary the angle of the bevel.
11. In a trimming machine, means for trimming a, heel cover margin which projects beyond the edge of a heel faceto which the cover has been applied, said trimming means including a cutting block having a work engaging face, and a trimming knife arranged to be reciprocated in a path oblique to the work engaging face of the cutting block, a mounting for the cutting block pern'iitting the latter to be tilted to vary the angular relation of the cover margin to the path of the knife to vary the angle of bevel, and means for positioning the heel with respect to the trimming means.
12. In a trimming machine, a work rest across which a. heel is adapted to be fed, a knife movable in a direction to bevel the margin of a cover which projects beyond one of the edges of the heel, and a member for supporting the cover margin as it is being trimmed, said member being adjustable to vary the transverse angular relation of the cover margin to the knife to vary the angle of bevel to be imparted to the cover margin.
13. In a trimming machine, a work rest across which a heel is adapted to be fed, a trimming knife, an anvil for supporting a cover margin which projects beyond one of the edges of the heel and co-op'erating with the knife to bevel the cover margin, said anvil being mounted for tilting adjustment about an axis coincident with the line of contact between the knife and the anvil to vary the angle of bevel.
14. In a trimming machine, a work rest across which a heel is adapted to be fed, a cutting block for supporting a cover margin which projects beyond an edge of the heel, a trimimng knife arranged to co-operate with one edge of the cutting block to trim the cover margin, and means for supporting the cutting block with its work engaging surface angularly disposed with respect to the path of the knife to enable the knife to move beyond said edge of the cutting block on the cutting stroke of the knife.
15. In a trimming machine, means for trimming the cover margin which projects beyond one of the edges of a heel, a movable gage for determining the width to which the margin is to be trimmed, and means for moving the relatively to the trimming means while the machine is operating to vary the width of the margin.
16. In a trimming machine, means for trimming the cover margin which projects beyond one of the edges of a heel, a gage for determining the width to which the margin is to be trimmed, yielding means for holding the gage in position for trimming a narrow margin, and operator-controlled means for moving the gage into position for the trimming of a wide margin.
17. In a trimming machine, means for trimming a heel cover which projects beyond the edge of a heel, and upper and lower gage members comprising angularly disposed workengaging faces arranged to engage two surfaces of the heel which meet at an edge over which a margin of the cover is to be turned to locate the cover margin relatively to the knife as the heel is fed past the gage members.
18. In a trimming machine, means for trimming a cover margin which projects beyond one of the edges of a heel to which a coating of adhesive has been applied, a reciprocating trimming knife and a co-operating cutting block for trimming the cover margin, a gage constructed and arranged to position the heel to determine the location of the trimming cut and to support the cover margin at a point adjacent to the cutting block, and means for moving the cutting block relatively to the gage to remove said cutting block from contact with the adhesive coated surface of the cover margin between successive cutting strokes of the knife.
19. In a trimming machine, means for trimming a cover margin which projects beyond the edge of a heel, an adjustable gage for determining the width of the margin, means for adjusting the gage to vary the width of the margin, and an adjustable stop for varying the extent of adjustment to be imparted to the gage to vary the range of adjustment of the latter.
20. In a trimming machine, means for trimming a cover margin which projects beyond the edge of a heel, an adjustable gage for determining the width of the cover margin, means for adjusting the gage, and adjustable stops for varying the range of ad justment of said gage.
21. In a trimming machine, a reciprocating knife for trimming a cover margin which projects beyond the edge of a heel, a cutting block for co-operating with the trimming knife, and means co-operating with the cutting block for supporting the projecting cover margin, said cutting block and said means being relatively movable between cutting strokes of the knife to separate the cover margin from the cutting block.
22. In a trimming machine, a knife for trimming a cover margin which projects be yond the edge of a heel, an oscillating cutting block alternately moved into and out of position for co-opcrating with the trimming knife, and means for supporting the cover margin and stripping it from the cutting block on the retracting stroke of the latter.
23. In a trimming machine, means for trimming a cover margin which projects beyond the edge of a heel, a gage for determining the width of the margin, yielding means for holding the gage in position for the trimming of a narrow margin, and means for shifting the gage into position for the trimming of a wide margin.
24. In a trimming machine. means for trimming the freshly coated margin of a cover projecting beyond the edge of an article to which the c V81 has been applied, a gage for engaging the article to determine the width to which the cover margin is to be trimmed, said age being arranged to support the cover margin while it is being trimmed,
and means to move the anvil relatively to the supporting gage to break the contact between the anvil and the coated surface of the cover.
25. In a machine for trimming sheet material having an adhesive coated surface, in combination, a cutting block movable into and out of engagement with the coated surface of the material to be trimmed, a knife movable into and out of co-operative relation with the block to trim the material, and means co-operating with the block to disengage the coated surface of the material from the block during the reciprocating movement of the latter.
26. In a machine for trimming sheet mate rialhaving an adhesive coated surface, in combination, a reciprocating trimming knife, a cutting block movable alternately into and out of engagement with the coated surface of the work to co-operate with'the knife in trimming the work, and means for supporting the work during the reciprocating stroke of the block to hold the coated surface of the work out of contact with the block.
27. Ina machine for trimming a cover applied to the rear and side faces of a heel and having margins projecting beyond one or more of the other faces of the heel having, in combination, a knife, a cutting block for co-operating with the knife to trim the cover margins, means for reciprocating the knife and the cutting block to move them simultaneously in opposite directions, and means for engaging both the heel and a portion of a projecting cover margin for gaging the location of the trimming cut and separating the cover margin from the cutting block upon the movements of the block away from the knife.
28. In a machine for trimming heel coverings, in combination, a knife, a cuttingblock for co-operating with the knlfe to trim a heel cover margin projecting beyond the rear and side surfaces of a heel to which the body of the covering has been applied, and means arranged to engage each of the two angularly disposed heel surfaces at points closely adjacent to the portion of the pro ectlng coyer which is being trimmed to gage the locatlon of the trimming cut.
29. In a machine for trimming a heel cover margin which projects beyond one edge of a heel surface to which a cover has been applied, a reciprocating trimming knife, a cutting block movable to and from trimming position during each reciprocation of the knife to cooperate with said knife, means for operating the knife and the cutting block, means for engaging the heel to locate the cover margin in position to be operated upon by the knife and cutting block, and means for stripping the cover margin from the knife during the movement of the latter away from cutting position.
30. In a trimming machine,- means for sn pporting and trimming a portion of a flexible heel cover margin which projects beyond an edge of a heel face to which the cover has been applied to prepare the cover margin for being secured to another face of the heel, and means constructed and arranged to engage simultaneously both the covered face and another face of the heel to position the heel relatively to the trimn'iing means to determine the Inca tion of the trimming cut. I
31; In a trimming machine, means for supporting and trimming a flexible cover marg'n which projects beyond an edge of a heel face to which the cover has been applied, and means constructed and arranged to engage simultaneously both the covered face and another face of the heel'over considerable surface areas to position the heel relatively to the trimming means to determinethe location of the trimming cut.
32. In a trimming machine, means for trimming a portion of a heel cover margin which projects beyond an edge of the breast face of a heel to which the cover has been applied to prepare the cover margin for being secured to another face of the heel, and means constructed and arranged to engage both the breast and a side face of the heel over con siderable surface areas at positions closely adjacent to said edge to position the heel to determine the location of the trimming cut.
33. In a trimming machine, means for trimming a heel cover margin which projects beyond one of the edges of a heel face to which the cover has been applied comprising cooperating trimming devices between which the projecting cover margin is interposed, a gage member spaced from said edge of the heel for engaging a portion of the covered face of the heel, a second gage member for another portion of the heel and cooperating with the first gage member to position the heel to determine the location of the trimming cut, and means for adjusting the second gage member to vary the width to which the margin is to be trimmed.
In a trimming machine, means for trinnning a heel cover margin which projects beyond one of the edges of a heel face to which the'cover has been applied comprising cooperating trimming devices between which the projecting cover margin is interposed, a gage member spaced from said edge of the heel for engaging a portion of the covered face of the heel, and a second gage member for engaging another portion of the heel and cooperating with the first gage member to position the heel to determine the location of the trimming cut. 7 l
35. In a trimming machine, two spaced gage members one of which is arranged to engage a substantial surface area of the outer face of a heel cover applied to a face of a heel and the other of which is arranged to engage another face of the heel and the other face of a projecting margin of said cover, and trimming means constructed and arranged to sever said projecting margin as the heel is advanced along and in contact With said members.
36. In a trimming machine, two relatively adjustable members spaced apart and arranged one to engage a face of a heel and the other to engage a substantial surface area of the outer surface of a cover applied to another face of the heel, the said one being arranged to engage also the other surface of a projecting margin of said cover, trimming means constructed and arranged to sever said margin, and manually controlled means constructed and arranged to regulate the space between said members.
