IMPROVEMENT IN CONNECTING-RODS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,633, dated August 28, 1877; application filed July 9, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, GEORGE W. WILKS, of Roberson Fork, in the county of Marshall and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Connecting-Rod, of which the following is a specification:

My invention consists in the arrangement in the straps of aconnecting-rod of side pieces between which are placed boxes, which are so proportioned that their surfaces that come into contact are reduced to a knife-edge to admit of adjusting the boxes without filing.
In the drawing, A is a connecting-rod, having bolted to it the strap B, in which the side pieces a are placed. ihese side pieces are grooved to receive the sides of the strap B. Between the side pieces a. the parts b 0 of the box are placed, which are prevented from sliding laterally by a groove formed in the part b,'which receives the end piece or cross-bar of the strap B, and by a gib, d, which is placed in a slot formed across the end of the connecting-rod and receives the part c. A screw, 0, passes through the end piece of the strap B, and bears against the part b of the box, and screwsepass through ears f formed on the sides of the connecting-rod near the end, and bear against the gib d. By means of these screws the halves of the connectingrod box are adjusted and held in place. The surfaces of the parts b 0 that come into contact are reduced to a knife edge, so that they may be forced together by the screws as the box becomes worn, and the necessity of filing the boxes is avoided.
The screw 0 is prevented from turning by a wrench or hasp, D, which is bent at right angles, and secured to the strap B by a tap-bolt, g. The screws 6 are prevented from turning by a similar wrench or hasp, which is forked so as to embrace the heads of both screws, which pass through a slot in the wrench. The tap-bolt is loosened and the wrench disengaged from the screw 0 whenever it is turned.
By means of myimprovement the boxes of a connecting-rod may be accurately adjusted without removing and filing them, and when adjusted cannot become accidentally loosened or disarranged.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The side pieces a, parts b 0, having their meeting-surfaces reduced to a knife-edge, the gib d, screws U c, connectingrod A, and strap B, in combination substantially as shown and described.
