LOCOHOTIVE MUD RING 4 Filed Nav. as. 1929 Patented Feb. 6, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LOCOMOTIVE MUD RING Application November 23, 1929 Serial N0. 409,234
2 Claims.
Our invention relates to new anduseful improvements in locomotives, and more particularly to the foundation ring or mud ring of the locomo tive rebox.
This invention contemplates and has for its principal object forming the grate supports or bearer bars and mud ring integrally, and more particularly, it consists in forming the side and center grate supports or bars and the side sections l0 of the mud ring integrally.
These and other objects and advantages will be recognized from the following description and from the drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a top plan View of our integrally formed mud ring and grate bearer bars;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1 with a portion of the iirebox conventionally shown;
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing there is shown conventionally, particularly in Figs. 2 to 4, a locomotive rebox of usual form, having hollow end and side walls 10. The hollow walls 10 are provided with a mud ring and indicated as a whole at 1l, comprising parallel side sections such as 12 and parallel transverse end sections 13. The mud ring is formed with upstanding shoulders or llanges, namely, an inner ilange 14 and outer shoulder 15, said ilanges forming an integral part of the mud ring.
The inner sheet 16 of the rebox is attached to the mud ring at the inner side of the flange 14, and the outer sheet 17 of the rebox is attached to the mud ring at the outer side of the flange 15. These sheets are secured to the respective ilanges by riveting or in any other suitable manner. At 18 is represented a side bearer bar for supporting the rebox grate and at 19 a center bearer bar likewise used for supporting the iirebox grate. The grate bearer bars 18 and 19 constitute an integral part of the mud ring 11 jointed at their ends with the flange 14 of the mud ring. The bearer bars 18 and 19 are provided with recesses 20 adapted to receive the trunnions of the grate sections, not shown, and supporting them.
If preferred, the side bearer bars 18 can be eliminated and the grate sections at their sides supported from the side sections 12 of the mud ring from circular projections or trunnions that may be formed therewith and each projection or 60 trunnion adapted to be received in a corresponding recess or seat in one of the grate sections. With this form or" grate structure the recesses 20 of the center bar 19 would not be used and in their place there would be provided circular projections or trunnions similar to those referred to for use with the side walls.
The mud ring and the grate bearer bars or supports may be cast in any desired shape or form, and it is to be understood that the form shown in the gures is selected merely to illustrate the invention. Numerous changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention.
The integral construction of the mud ringor grate supports or bearer bars provides a stronger construction than the fabricated construction heretofore in use. It further eliminates a number of parts and provides a simple construction which is readily made, cheap to manufacture and which will not work loose and require maintenance after the member is once assembled in a locomotive rebox.
We claim:
l. In combination, a boiler comprising an inner and an outer sheet, a mud ring for said boiler, a flange formed with and extending upwardly from the inner marginal edge of said mud ringv and around the perimeter thereof, said boiler outer sheet being attached at its lower marginal edge to the outer side of said mud ring and said boiler inner sheet being attached at its lower marginal edge to the inner side of said upwardly extending ange, and grate bearer bars formed with the outer side of said upwardly extending shoulder.
2. In combination, a boiler comprising an inner and an outer sheet, a mud ring for said boiler having an inner and an outer upstanding flange formed integrally with and extending around the perimeter of said mud ring, said boiler outer sheet being attached at its lower marginal edge to the outer sidev of said outer flange and said boiler inner sheet being attached at its lower marginal edge to the inner side of said inner llange and grate bearer bars formed with the outer side of said inner llange.
